Hey Rob! Thanks for the video. I bought a Stihl mower last month and quite honestly it's been a dream, especially with the wet/muddy conditions we've got here in Bolton. I've not cleaned it out once and it's brilliant for 'bagging' the grass. It's a great work horse.
Still running mine ......been using it alot for early season cuts ........still a bit wet for hayter pros at the moment, yours is a bit cleaner than mine , also brilliant for mulching cuts
Yes Rob there is an answer, and you've already got it. Have 2 mowers. One for the nice weather and one for the bad weather. A mower that leaves a fantastic finish for the majority of the time e.g. a Hayter or Honda or similar, and one for the bad weather e.g. the Stihl or Etesia. That's it. Easy peasy. And re your points about the finish, a mower designed for cutting in terrible conditions is never going to leave quite as good a finish at the pro roller mowers, but if you're only using them in the rain then it doesn't matter. Enjoyed the video as always.
Stihl or etesia for wet grass, she’s got a lovely clean bottom rob but I wouldn’t tilt her like that, last time I done that I flooded it with oil and got lock out, had to take the spark plug off and gave it a big pull, oil flew out and landed in my pond🤦♂️
@@theconsistentnoddy9851 think it’s the exhaust side but you also get oil leaking into the carb from the breather pipe if you tilt it on carb side, unless your piston is at the top and you’ve took off spark plug, I am no mechanic just watch a load of you tube so don’t believe anything I say because I am probably wrong.
I bought one after one of your videos 2 years ago ? Best mower I've used , I've attached a brush head to the box (same width as the deck) and it stripes the lawn !
Yep, we have the Viking MB650T, which is the forerunner of your Stihl. Brilliant at cutting wet grass, had it for 8 years now. Little tip Rob - if it's not raining, but the grass is wet, give it a blast over with your leaf blower, it knocks the water to the base of the grass and really helps.
Hi Rob Nice video and couldn’t agree more regarding Stihl mowers in wet conditions. I have the RM 655 RS and a smaller RM 448 VC. The plastic collection boxes allow for great airflow and like you’ve demonstrated they fill to the brim without any issues or blocking up. I love the folding handlebars too which make storage and transport easier 😁.
Rob ive always used cobra mowers. Last year I thought I would treat myself to a honda hrn 537 with blade brake, twin clip, and mulching slide. Biggest mistake I've made. It was horrendous, surging engine, noisy, wouldn't drive when the bag was half full, used to leave wheel marks, would rip at the grass. Anyway managed to get rid of it and replaced it with a Sthil RM 650V. Wow is all I can say, cuts beautifully, fills the box brim full, ploughs through long grass without dropping revs. My only regret is not buying the model with the blade brake. The lawn finish looks 100% better than the honda. I noticed you are not happy with the sthil finish. I was told before I used the sthil was to use 3-4 coats of car polish on the underside of the deck and shine it up which is supposed to throw the grass around the deck and into the box easier which then allows the blade to cut the standing grass easier without pre cut grass causing friction.
That’s the 4 wheel mower I use in conjunction with my Cobra pro roller. Yes it is a good all rounder, as all mowers are a compromise. Like the plastic grass catcher, like the speed and I like it for small lawns and tight access. I find it very good in dry, damp and light wet conditions but it has struggled in the early season when it was very wet and long. But as an all rounder it is excellent, not as good as Weibang but much lighter and miles better than Toro and Hayter and I rate Stihl dealers highly. Great post Rob
I love my rm650v rob it’s great at mulching too. Probably is lacking the Honda flap though. I’ve just purchased an etesia this season and that is a game changer in the wet 👍🏻
Great video rob,i have the stihl rm655rs and it picks up very well in wet weather and leaves a decent stripe and what i like too is the single arm/handle on the mower so its easier to get to the box and remove it when emptying,i would like to get a second mower though and im leaning towards the honda hrx 537 purely for the cut quality, good weather is on the way 😊
Hi Rob as regards to the honda hrx537 heres something to check out take off the 2nd small mulching blade when bagging wet grass and as u already know make sure the rpm is correct

Hi Rob, Love the videos btw. I don’t understand why other mower manufacturers insist on mesh collection bags. It’s clear that a plastic collection box is best for wet grass. As we have so much rain here in the uk you’d have thought they would have added them to improve their performance. I know the Etesia has one but as you say it’s a slower and weighty mower. Completely agree. We've been saying this for years. Even if they just offered the plastic box as an extra that you could buy separately that'd be fine,. I bet they'd sell loads.
another great video , our little Stihl RMA443vc does the same it throws the cuttingings in like theres no tomorrow, and with how smooth and flat the underneath is it doesnt seem to stick to the bottom as much, still getting out heads around the box opening backwards though lol makes it a bit harder to empty it into the bags we use, so looking for some nice big trugs to use, If anyone out there know where to get some good strong over 70ltr trugs let me know. and ignore the Karens they know nothing mate again keep up the awesome videos and cuts
Nice video rob, that mower did a fantastic job really impressed and quick. Also not clogging up underneath and cleaning is a big plus lawn looked decent for the deluge of rain we have been getting. I always like to strim afterwards also.have a great week rob best wishes tom.
Nice mower. I’ve got Stihls rm655 rs roller mower. Great in wet conditions, but that’s down to the plastic box grass bag compared to most other mowers that have fabric bags which get bunged up with mess pretty quick. All the best👍🏼
Great video Rob. The blade looks a lot like the ACK 050 Catcher kit that Stihl sell. I'm not sure but either way it looks different to the standard blades on my mine. Perhaps this is why it collects so well and doesn't clog. Sometimes it's the little things that make the difference. I'm looking at DIY rollers or kits you can buy that can give a stripe on a standard push mower. Maybe an option for the Stihl?
Hi rob have you managed to get all your jobs done this week in the weather? It looks ok to me good job in wet grass 👍you lost a few customers then how many and you managed to replace them. Hey Rob, I’m picking up a Honda HRN 536 tomorrow after running my business using a ‘yardforce’ mower for the last year and a half, can’t wait to see the difference a proper mower will make, especially with the wet weather! I was debating over stihl and Honda, but the Honda won for me as it has the twin blade and mulching lever so it seems like the best all rounder
I have this mower and it's not good in the wet .I think it's the twin mulching blade. I've had it for a year.its fast and the mulching is great.barely noticeable in summer but on a wet day forget it I'm afraid. It needs highlift blades to collect in the wet but the fabric box will always mean its not great.good for big lawns on a dry day
@@nathanbray1358 damn, well hopefully it’ll still be a decent upgrade from the one I’ve got currently, this one clogs instantly makes it impossible to mow, I’ll look into getting a stihl eventually for the wet days next season
I'm lucky I have a transit custom and always carry 2 mowers but actually have 6 .I don't think any mower is great at everything. They can be too big/small/heavy or not the best in the wet.the honda is great for bigger jobs and the £600 stihl 545 is a great mower to partner it if you have the space and money
Keeping the grass bag/box clean helps enormously. My KAAZ is extremely reliable and built like a bomb shelter, but probably needs tuning as it's a tad underpowered!
We've just bought the Stihl RM655V which is more or less the same as yours. Nice machine and with the mulch plug in leaves very little mess even when cutting 4 inch long damp grass! I must say I am a fan of Stihl equipment.
I've been using the Stihl roller mowers for a few years now. Fantastic for wet grass. But the parts do wear down quickly after heavy use. Also I preferred the old Briggs engine 👍
Awesome video you have quite the collection of mowers. I can't get over that you strim after? I thought that was an American thing lol! IMO it saves time doing it before especially in damper or longer grass conditions.
Funny I bought a stihl rm545vr two weeks ago and after 15 years gardening I've found perhaps the perfect mower.the plastic box means airflow is easily maintained and its light and doesn't dig in.its not blocked once and I've done about 40 gardens with it Really good price £600 from charlies and it has a roller. Only negative is obviously its not massive but ideal for most gardens and those with steps...and not the fastest. My honda hrx476 which I've used for years is sitting in the garage and will probably be sold.the weak drive meant I was doing some of the work to push it along and not great in the wet.. And heavy.if the stihl had a honda engine it would be perfect but the brings seems OK Time will tell.i have a big honda for larger gardens on a dry day and will carry that with the stihl.its a fantastic mower.i bought a small weibang last summer with high lift blade and that blocks with wet grass.for the money if I get 2 seasons out of the stihl I will be very happy
I use this mower myself. I love it and it's really good on damp grass, but I've found it does clog up with really wet grass. I cut some croquet pitches on the local rec, they obviously want it short and thats when i find it struggles! What setting did you have the height on rob? I cut the pitches on a 2 last week and a 1 this week, it really struggled, but the grass was saturated.
Your can't beat putting down sexy stripes on a well managed loooked after green, finishd off with a cylinder mower, but all these battle field lawns that are thrown at us are always gonna be challenging, but it's our bread & butter just gotta do our best, cracking mower tho that is.
I was told by a professional gardener that some modern Honda mowers are running at lower RPM than they used to. It was a decision by Honda to reduce emissions. Slower RMP means less suction and uplift.
Hi Rob, quick question as i don’t do much mowing but have been asked to quote a lawn for fortnightly mowing with a lawn size of 396sqm. What would your estimated quote be on this size that is flat and square. Customer said it takes him 2hrs. 😮
I sent my lad to cut a new customers lawn the other day he said to me not that 1ft high one it’s been raining all night. I said yes take the stihl mower 30 minutes later he says all done he was well impressed
Hi Rob nice job👍 I can't figure out why you do a 2nd cut!! Why don't you strim first, blow the loose clippings back into the lawn, cut it and then go around once more with the blower. Your wasting your own time cos a 2nd cut is making zero difference and I know what I'm talking about without being smart. Anyway hope the weather clears up! 👍
That's fine on a tiny lawn. Neither of ye will be performing a double cut on a quarter of an acre or bigger. Only costing ye money, price of petrol now and repairs to mowers is expensive. Cut them and move on to the next job
Stihl has got mower decks sussed. Collect just as good as etesia's at half the price. This version has a roller model with a better finish and still collects great in the wet. Maybe you should have bought the roller version, wet collection and stripes.
if its that good its worth having just to use on wet days. It looks like its got a very open mesh on the bag so theres less effort to chuck the grass in the bag so my guess thats its secret
If the box is the same as the other STIHL mowers it basically splits into two to empty. It works brilliantly and emptying them takes seconds ( I have the RM 665 R/S and smaller RM 448 VC)
Wow, that grass is not tall. Looking to cut my grass, first cut since last season so vry long. Would you strim fiirst, its quite bumpy with worm casts as well?
Dur During the summer when I can mow it myself, with an ego electric mower, it takes me 2 days lol, takes the gardener when he actually gets to me about 25 mins

@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices You are not alone , if you need someone to talk to about mowing first , then strimming and the abuse you receive im here 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Always good too have options. 4 wheels until the ground hardens up
Thanks Carl, wise words.
Your can't beat putting down sexy stripes on a well managed loooked after green, finishd off with a cylinder mower, but all these battle field lawns that are thrown at us are always gonna be challenging, but it's our bread & butter just gotta do our best, cracking mower tho that is.
Very wise. All the best.
I was told by a professional gardener that some modern Honda mowers are running at lower RPM than they used to. It was a decision by Honda to reduce emissions. Slower RMP means less suction and uplift.
I didn’t know that 👍🏻
You can increase the revs very easily.
Nice job Rob, what level did u now that at, my Stihl has 1-7 levels
Number three. 👍🏻
I've tweaked the revs to 3k on my hrx. not perfect but much better
Thanks for that 👍🏻
With all the rain over the last months the amount of moss in the lawns has gone mental , so I've got a lot of scarifying over the next couple of weeks
Good luck with it
Absolutely banging video. Also, what instrument did you play 😉
😂 you know.👍🏻🙏🥊
Wonder if you could fit a rubber strap to the back of that for the lines?
It’s worth looking into.
Hi Rob, quick question as i don’t do much mowing but have been asked to quote a lawn for fortnightly mowing with a lawn size of 396sqm. What would your estimated quote be on this size that is flat and square. Customer said it takes him 2hrs. 😮
£70 per cut. 👍🏻
Thanks for the reply, i was thinking around £60 - £70 mark 👍🏻
I sent my lad to cut a new customers lawn the other day he said to me not that 1ft high one it’s been raining all night.
I said yes take the stihl mower 30 minutes later he says all done he was well impressed
Brilliant 🤩
It looks a decent job to me doe's the Stihl Rob
Thank you Wayne. All the best.
Have a good week Rob
If its long grass, just strim it all off first and rake it off and then mow it, works for me.. can charge a little more as well.
Wise.👍🏻
ETESIA PRO 46-PHTS3 does great job in wet too
Yer but 3 times the price
Not if you paid just £120 in auction
@@mareuss111 niçe one mate 👍
Hi Rob nice job👍 I can't figure out why you do a 2nd cut!! Why don't you strim first, blow the loose clippings back into the lawn, cut it and then go around once more with the blower. Your wasting your own time cos a 2nd cut is making zero difference and I know what I'm talking about without being smart. Anyway hope the weather clears up! 👍
I disagree, double cut makes all the difference. 👍🏻
I double cut too if itl only take me 5 or ten more minutes. Defo makes a difference especially in the wet
Thanks for the info!
i did some wet lawns stuck to underneath like glue because grass soaked,it is what it is.
Put your rpm upto 3400rpm and you'll see a massive difference In bagging and the finish. Stihl mowers come really underpowered
Thank you for that
As my Grandpa always said, "you don't mow grass when it's wet."
Thank you for sharing.
Weibang brilliant, put a high lifting blade on it GAME changer. Rob want speed, get the 7 speed weibang you would need the jogging 🏃♂️ shoes on 😂😂
They are too heavy, in my humble opinion,
if its that good its worth having just to use on wet days.
It looks like its got a very open mesh on the bag so theres less effort to chuck the grass in the bag so my guess thats its secret
Yes and yes.👍🏻
Is the box hard to tip out it does not look as easy as the 537
If the box is the same as the other STIHL mowers it basically splits into two to empty. It works brilliantly and emptying them takes seconds ( I have the RM 665 R/S and smaller RM 448 VC)
It can be
Wow, that grass is not tall. Looking to cut my grass, first cut since last season so vry long. Would you strim fiirst, its quite bumpy with worm casts as well?
Dur
During the summer when I can mow it myself, with an ego electric mower, it takes me 2 days lol, takes the gardener when he actually gets to me about 25 mins
Yes and yes
It's time you pronounced Stihl correctly, it's STEEL, it niggles me a little 😂 you're not alone with your pronunciation, but our German friends need it saying right 😂
Thank you for the feedback 👍🏻
I like to cut first as well
Thank god it’s not just me. 😂
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices You are not alone , if you need someone to talk to about mowing first , then strimming and the abuse you receive im here 🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂 thanks.
I don’t think it’s a good finish but then again that lawn does look in poor nick!
Thanks
You sold me at....half the price
Pleased you like it
