  • Many deer hunters witness a second flurry of rut activity a few weeks after the main peak. There are two things that can cause this to happen. One is a good sign for the deer population, and the other is not. How can you tell which one is causing the late rut activity in your woods?
In this video, NDA’s Lindsay Thomas Jr. explains, and he provides tips on what you can do to avoid the bad scenario for a second rut.

I saw a second rut in PA in early December and it was insane. I saw at least 30 deer in 2-3 hours that day. 3 bucks and the rest were young, first year doe prancing around looking for a mate. It was very interesting... it also allowed me to harvest a nice 8-point. When I shot him, 2 does actually came running out of the woods to see what the loud noise was and just stood there. Never seen anything like it.

Great info Lindsay! Thank you. On a side note, r.e. tooth replacement/aging when hunting the late rut, mid December here in Michigan, it's very common to take yearling deer that have shed their 3rd 3 cusp tooth, it's easily identifiable because the replacement tooth isn't usually fully erupted.

    • @DeerAssociation
      @DeerAssociation  2 роки тому +4

True! On late-season deer, that 3-cusped temporary tooth may already be gone, but the replacement tooth will look clean and new (or not fully erupted as you mentioned). However, at this point in the year, milk will pretty much be gone from all doe udders, so you can't use that as an indicator of fawn production that year.

From our experience hunting the Eastern Shore of VA, you can expect to see chasing just about anytime in Nov. A second rut, but not as much chasing, around the 9th of Dec. A local, who has hunted the shore for years, swears there is a third rut, around the end of Dec into early Jan.
The ratio of doe to bucks is high, and i bet greater that 5:1.

This is likely not third and fourth rounds of estrous cycles but simply a more widely spread distribution of early to late breeding does in the population. In the Deep South, the "peak" of the rut is often broader on the calendar and less intense at the peak than in the North, because winter is not as strong a survival factor for fawns. In the North, fawns that aren't born in a fairly narrow window of time won't survive winter.

Good info, Lindsay! I understand that a small number of does occasionally miscarry each year. If that happens early in the breeding season, do those does cycle in again and re-breed that same year or are their bodies in a condition where they won't be bred again until the following year?

I agree w/ you appear educated. I agree w/ lotsa possibilities that you mention. HOWEVER, book/data "experts" dance around/ "puhshaw" long range upcoming weather as a factor in late ruts. My point: deer been living longer than humans been pontificating. Animals "know" things, instinctively. This current season(2022), rut usually hits approx Nov 8-15., yet I( as a deer hunter w/60 yrs exp) found little, if any evidence of that. Nov 28, my wife was almost knocked down by doe, w/ 8ptr in HOT pursuit, as my wife went to mail-box.( We live @intersection of heavily traveled 2-lane highways.) Subsequently, deer/vehicle collisions increased significantly during period of 11/28/22>12/01/22. This was in a 10mi radious of our house( We're retired, so we had plenty of time to check plenty of areas) I fully believe that the rut hit on those three days. Unusual. I'm banking on next(2nd rut) hit 12/26/27/28. I also expect a rough end of winter/begining of spring 2023. BECAUSE, them animals know things!! ADDENDUM, 2023: Due to extra dry/wonky weather, rut hit 11/14/23, very short lived. 2nd rut, 12/10 & 12/11/23 actually more noticeable. Actually saw same 8-ptnr service a doe each day. Surprisingly, saw 10-pointer "hot-trailing" a doe 12/12/23. Guess we gonna have late fawns '24. Also saw "just-outa-spots"fawn, different area, same day. Definately a late-fawn, '23!!

There is almost always a second rut here in MN. This is especially true when the weather is unusually warm in early November. The deer do not move much in warm conditions and so a lot of does do not get bred. It seems a lot of 1.5 year old does do not get bred in the first rut no matter the weather. I had a nice 8 pointer walk right by my tree stand while bow hunting today. It was out looking for does smelling the ground like a bird dog. We also had a buck chasing a year old doe in our backyard.

The irony of a doe fawn coming into estrus late is that her mother was bred early enough that she had time to get big enough to breed, and the doe fawn's offsprings will not be mature enough the next season. We have late rut here in Alabama and we have 2 different subspecies I guess for lack of a better term (way back when deer from Michigan were brought down to the national forests) and the Michigan deer rut about a month earlier than the bama deer

The doe to buck ratio is so out of balance locally that 75% of the mature does bred at all! Besides it not being "macho" to shoot a doe, there is the belief that if you shoot a doe you are killing three deer - the doe and her (potential) fawns. Seen guys shoot a button-buck instead of a mature doe (both reqire an "antler-less" tag). Seems that the idea that no bucks = no fawns hasn't occurred to these guys. The other concern about does breeding the second rut is that their fawns don't have the body mass to survive their first winter. This video should be mandatory viewing for every deer tag sold. But I doubt that would change the "any buck or nothing" attitude. The only way to restore the buck doe ratio is to mandate a "8-point or better" law to protect the young bucks. A friend implemented that on his 400 acre property and in 4 years his deer herd is back in balance with an excellent population of BIG bucks. Good luck with your deer management education!

The problem is meat hunters, they don't care about tomorrow or the next guy as long as they get what they want! That's how it is here in SE Wisconsin it's horrible place to hunt and raise future hunter's, we have to many season's with youth hunt then bow then gun then muzzleloader then late season doe gun hunt then late season bow and in some places a holiday hunt... it's crazy there's guys literally taking 6+ deer a year not to mention endless amount of doe tags in alot of counties that can be purchased and we wonder why deer hunting gone to heck... i can't help but look back in history when white man almost made buffalo extinct and we will do it to the whitetail species. There's no chance the deer population to rebound from this year after year something has to dramatically change! Combine youth and muzzle loader into normal 9 day gun hunt and eliminate the late season gun doe season and the endless amount of doe tags, 2 years make it buck only statewide and 8 point or better and watch and see the deer bounce back like it used to be

I am relatively certain my habitat supports the animals we have, and then some. Still, I am concerned we have TOO MANY animals (bucks and does alike). Our fawn recruitment these past years has been off the charts with MANY doubles. I actually welcome most coyotes to take what they want.
I have witnessed breeding up to late December and have seen fresh fawns in late Sept (meaning a Jan or Feb breeding took place). We take about two does for every buck. QUESTION: With all this breeding activity, does any science indicate how it might negatively affect body and antler health in bucks? Even if the breeding is "healthy balanced herd" breeding. Or what is your opinion in that? Thank you Mr. Thomas.

There's 3 reasons why the doe population well exceeds the buck. 1. Lack of hunter's
    2. Private property owners restrict hunting and neglect to kill what does that are needed to removed from the herd.

We have had an unbalanced issue in Alabama for decades. This year you are allowed to take only 3 bucks all season and one has to have at least 4 points on one antler. But you can harvest an unantlered deer every day of the 119 day season. (bow + gun) Our rut typically happens in late December or early January, but every year I see scrapes and rubs in late January and early February. I decided years ago to focus on harvesting unantlered deer in an effort to help balance the population. I think it's beginning to get better. 10 years or so ago, the state regs let you harvest 2 unantlered deer a day.

This year every deer I've taken has been off my back deck in the suburbs of Birmingham. My neighbors were all complaining about the devastation to their landscaping, so I volunteered to thin the local herd bowhunting and share the venison. We've got plenty of deer that's for sure. I would check about transportation regulations for venison if you are from out of state. Chronic Wasting Disease has caused changes in a lot of regs recently. This is very true in Arkansas. I have killed more 150+ class bucks in our second rut than in the first rut, and I’ve done this on public hunting land.
One problem we have is deer leases. Many of these leases are required to kill a certain number of doe each year and many do not get near that number. Nothing gets done about it by the game and fish. Do your own research and you will be amazed. Secondly, too many young bucks are killed every year. Our hunters would rather kill a 2 year old 6 point than a 5 year old doe.
I know this because I had been in a few leases for 35+ years of hunting. Plus there’s more drama in deer leases than a soap opera!
It’s disheartening to let 6 or more young bucks walk and come back to camp each hunt and see them hanging on the skinning rack.
I wish this state would go to an 8 point rule and sell a spike tag to get rid of these 4 year old cowbell spikes.

I think it’s concerning no matter the reason when does are being breed late. For the reasons you mentioned, fawns that are born later are faced with less than ideal circumstances and survival rates drop plus it perpetuates the late breeding cycle. Not sure there is a iron clad answer to this problem but certainly a management system that works toward a 1:1 ratio and one that promotes mature bucks being the breeders in the system goes a long way in solving it.

From my experience it can be even better because there is less does in estrous and the bucks have to travel more to find does. The only problem is there seems to be less really big bucks in this rut. Do you have scientific data that supports your statement? Miscarriage rates in whitetails are extremely low. In a healthy population, most does bear fawns every year, and a fair number produce triplets. For the very small percentage that miscarry, it's unlikely they would go into estrus a second time that year.

Interesting but just does not fit at all from my experience on what I call secondary RUT for young fawn doe..Take a book to share 74 years of chasing whitetail deer. Deer was brought into Georgia from Texas deer and the professionals felt due to the hoof & screw worm from cattle would effect deer. In Georgia that line runs middle of the state to Macon over towards Savannah, Ga . The rut came in the middle of November the week before thanksgiving, week of Thanksgiving or week after. But does not hold true for the very bottom third of Georgia. (Hold on that for one minute) living in Columbus I also hunted in Barbour county Alabama. Deer were over populated and I seen a browse line which cause young deer to high death . The Rut alway happen week after Christmas, secondary rut was not seen, until the explosion of hogs as trapping was needed to to capture to stop population explosion. We captured deer full grown bucks scrapes , neck swell chasing young doe. The deer came from stock of deer from Wisconsin. A lot more information on this to share in this arena. Jump back to South Georgia where I live now, I hunt using bow&arrow taking wife on deer hunts. Baiting is legal now and trying get her bow kill, every fawn that came to feed with mother into feed (October) bow season fawn still sucked mother doe , small with spots. She refuse to shoot any doe or fawn. Counting back to estrus for these doe landed around Christmas or January. Asking game & fish ( book experts) the same answer alway Thanksgiving is Rut in Ga.

Just curious from my observation over the past 60 years: If you kill a 'mature" doe with milk haven't you just starved 1-2 Fawns ? How can one tell if a good doe has already been bred and you go ahead and shoot it anyway ? In my observation more yearling does are killed than mature does, at least in SE Ar. how does that help in reproduction of future deer ? Lastly, while visiting a big deer farm recently I discovered that the genetics for healthy bucks with nice racks are not in the Buck but in the doe. Does there bring far more money than a Buck that will score 258. How can we as hunters apply that logic in the woods and kill the "right" does ?

Do a video on kull bucks some clubs let kulls walk and say we'll give them another year to grow , I say they give them another year to breed, they shoot all the small rack buck because they are club legal , and they all cry about not having big bucks on the club. The club I just left is full of 140 lbs and 150 lbs 4,5,6, point deer with no brow tines they shoot 125 lbs,130lbs 7 ,8, points with brow tines, after about 4 years I said I'm out

    • @DeerAssociation
      @DeerAssociation  2 роки тому +1

If we did a video on cull bucks, it would say "there is no such thing as a cull buck." Hunters of wild deer cannot manage genetics through harvest decisions. If you want to improve numbers of adult bucks in the population, set yourself a minimum target age class that is appropriate for your experience level and realistic for the deer population. Shoot bucks that meet your age goal. Pass those that don't. It's that easy. No need to complicate it with ideas about culling, which are largely false.

No time to watch the video, but from experience the second rut is caused by late season does coming back in heet that haven't been bread. Does begin to go into heet in late Oct, while the most in November. They cycle in and out monthly just a women do until they are bread or the cycles end in spring. The more does around that are in heet, the longer bucks will keep their antlers.

I am on 400 acres and the rule I follow is thaat I never shoot a doe for any reason.
I have enough people around me on more open property that shoot anything that walks and they take several doe each year, But they also dont get many bucks, especially older bucks.
On this farm with 21 cameras out this year I counted 9 doe including 4 fawn doe, BUT I counted for sure 13 different bucks and saw a few very small racked bucks and could not for sure say they were another buck to ad to the list. Of those 13 bucks, 5 were 10pts, 1 was 13 pts and 1 nice 8, 2 small 8s , a 9 that got killed by a car and the others smaller. That is a ratio of 2 to 1. Now my farm has areas up to 8 acres that have not been stepped into for up to 6 years and these areas are so thick, I dont see how a rabbit gets through these, with briars, buckthorn and bush honeysuckle. We have ag fields, and 5 food plots and 18 stands set up.
Each year I try to take a trophy buck and a buck that is older no matter the size of rack or what I call a cull, such as a 2.5 year old fork horn or horns that would not score 50 inches and it is clear the deer is 2.5.
It works for me, as in 10 years I have only seen 1 spike and have killed some very nice deer. This year was a 184 3/8 and a deer that was 6 year old 113 4/8 10pt and last year 160 2/8. So my advice is know what you have and what your neighbors have before you decide to clear out was doe.

Here in MN, bucks will run up to ten miles a day during the rut. The buck that comes by during the rut might have been hanging out several miles away before the rut started. The DNR put collars on a number of bucks to see how far they traveled. The bucks don't move a lot until the rut and then they run and run. Pretty eye opening.

It's pretty difficult to achieve a ratio as bad as 5:1 in wild deer, but it can be done. Certainly, if a deer population is below what can be supported by local habitat, you shouldn't harvest many if any does until the population if healthy and growing again.

Hate to burst you're bubbles but there is only one rut. It starts as early as September and ends as late as February, March and even as late as JUNE! The only thing you got right is that when a doe doesn't get bred in November, too include all the other months, it is due to the buck to doe ratio. Bottom line, there is no second rut or 3 rut or 4th rut, etc. All doe do not all come into heat at the same time, this is Nature's way to ensure that the majority of doe do get bred ideally so that the fawns are born during the spring, March through May.
