Neil J. Young, co-host of the Past Present podcast, discusses his recent book Coming Out Republican: A History of the Gay Right.

Moving forward, Young then looks to the major role played by California Governor and US President Ronald Reagan over the outset and evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in pushing rhetoric and policy that sought to otherize and demonize the homosexual “lifestyle” as the root of the crisis, and helping to launch a period of severe backlash to the social progress of the 1960s, particularly among the right. After expanding on the role of the public school system, and specifically the targeting of public school teachers, in right-wing attempts to marginalize and exclude queer folks, Neil and Emma walk through some of the major parallels we see with the challenges facing queer Americans today, wrapping up with the importance of understanding the immense stakes of this moment within its historical context.

I have no idea how people get duped into thinking small government and limited government are at all the same. A dictatorship is a small unlimited government, which is what republican politicians want.

My Husband and I were Gay Republicans in the 1980's and 1990's. We are fairly successful, invested, property owners. But what good is all of that in a concentration camp? We will lose our rights the minute Trump gets into office. No thanks! We are Independent and are voting for HARRIS WALZ 2024

Goldman Sachs have come out today and said Harris will be better for the economy than Trump, so it's a no brainer. Trump's only appeal is to socially conservative fuckwits who want to take the country back to the 1950s, if not the 1850s.

I don’t get how you can be gay and like Ronald Reagan knowing he exasperated the AIDS crisis with his inaction, and oh yeah, completely ignored his friend who had AIDS when they needed support facing something that was a death sentence. It just seems like the epitome of rooting for the leopards to eat your face because you like the pain 🤷‍♀️

What a completely ridiculous concept! During the Reagan years, there was still no scientific understanding of what exactly this disease was and how to treat it.

There’s lot of gay right wingers, some Nazis were gay, political ideologies are weird. I had no idea what I was really committing myself to when I supported Republicans. I’m not gay, but my heart is with the downtrodden, they feed you the prop that their way is the way to lift them up. The free market Fonzie, trickle down, govt is the problem crap. I last voted for McCain, I saw the party had changed. Now I realize I should have got out long before, it had already turned. They lied about the reasons for Iraq, but I still voted for them. When you are a R, democrats are just not an option, it’s really weird. Now it’s a straight up cult. I think my problem with the Trumpers is I could still be in that mindset. I see people trapped, all they do is defend and make excuses for outrageous things merely to defend the house of cards in their heads.

@@armashuvitzNope. In 1983, the AIDS virus had officially been named and scientific research on Infectious Diseases was archaic. Before ‘83, it did NOT have a name. Keep in mind and WAS linked to predominantly Promiscuous Homosexual Communities.

One of Harvey Milk's facetious slogans was, "I'm Harvey Milk, and I'm here to recruit you."
By the way, the notion that gay people have to recruit because we can't reproduce is beyond silly. We've been having biological children since forever, and we also find other ways to form our families, like adoption.
