Love the song, Ms Raitt takes to an unequaled height. My husband died in 1994 and I discovered it after, have listened to this song hundred of times. After all these years it still moves me. Thank you to both artists, Thomson and Raitt.
this is one of the best songs bonnie raitt has ever recorded. it is exceptional. i love it and i always think about those i have lost and miss so much, especially at the dimming of the day. thanks for posting this beautiful song.
there may be a number of versions of this song by richard thompson but to me it belongs to bonnie!! thanks for posting this classic by this lovely artist.
She is a superior and most affecting talent, no question - looks like a red-haired Meryl Streep. And Richard Thompson is a stellar composer who understands the human heart and can translate its yearning and sorrow into music so beautiful and poignant it's almost painful (but irresistable) to listen to. Class, class, class all the way.
I was never a huge Bonnie fan. But I do think she has the best version of this song. And many have done it. Good tuned guitars make a song special. A lot of people overlook guitar tuning when there is more than one playing. Very enjoyable to listen to her version.
When she was on the Grammys last night about ten minutes in, I remembered once again that she has more musicality in one finger than just about anyone else in that room......
I knew this song in Dave Gilmour's voice and I thought this is a great song with great emotion and lirics. But Bonnie put the song still more emotional and she deserves all claps for this. thank you from Brazil.
Absolutely simply just beautiful.....what a voice...and blended in perfect harmony....Brilliant lyrics by Richard Thompson....just a gorgeous song.,,Thank you for this lovely upload......TC...
Wonderful. She may sing it even better than Linda Thompson. The more I hear this song, the more I need it - at the dimming of this day. It moves within.
I have always loved this version. A true, artist- she makes you feel pain for the "other woman." Check out the Corr's version too, less passion, but great family harmony.
@loomisaero I am also in agreement... David Gilmour's version is supercharged with a much more soulful melody, and the guitar part is sprinkled with notes than further enhances the song. But then he is the master of melodic lead guitar.
The version on "Beat the Retreat" by the Blind Boys of Alabama is extremely good too, as is the one of Bonnie and the "Boys" doing Thompson's "When the Spell is Broken."
the very best version i mean the VERY BEST version of this song is by clive gregson and any trouble from the album wheels in motion .. some one please post it and let me know . cause im drowning in a river of my own tears .. such a beautiful lyric and melody i hope my angel will find this and know .... i need you at the dimming of the day
One of the really amazing versionsof this song is sung by 9 yr old AJ Lee, who also plays mando and fiddle by the way. She is guaranteed to impress. She does it in the style of Bonnie.
The first time I heard this song was on the David Gilmour DVD. Both my wife and I cried a wee bit. ...it's not a small song. I'd have thought the same if I'd heard this version, and indeed Mr Thompson's original. I've never heard David Gilmour do a duet with a women...........Please think about this one Sir
Love the way she does this song. Actually, as good a songwriter & guitarist Richard T is, I tend to like his songs better when done by other artists, but he's still great regardless!
That was an awesome cover. My favourite story though is how 9 Inch Nails said they quit performing Hurt after Johnny Cash covered it. "It his song now" was how they put it. Classy
@mr1168726 Pity, I tried to look for it here on YT, but could only find one version of them together. Found the one Veluby uploaded, and than someone commented that it was only Rory and Peter Green was not playing along. So maybe someone is going to share it with us someday I hope. The song Leaving Town Blues, written by Peter Green, is awesome, I knew that for a long time. Wanted to watch your channel too to see what favs you have, but was not able to access, shame......
I have to vote for Ms. Raitt on this one! I have loved this song since I bought her "I Can't Make You Love Me" album back in the day...damn it's been 20 years yet. I think the Celtic roots in her voice give her the edge over the other versions and what the heck is wrong with the guitar work? The only thing missing from this performance is a proper mic check, which apparently no one did, 'cause the guitars sound great but there is static in the vocal track.
@loomisaero Both are great but this song is a lyrical masterpiece. Therefore the vocals far exceed the instrumentation in impact and importance. This version wins, if there must be a "winner."
@glennkyle1 Every version is different, and fits different moods. Even the Mary Black one is alright, because of the song it is. It's like Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, endless debates about which one is the best. But there are only two types of music, good music and bad music.
As our days keep dimming, our only companion is Jesus who is going to be with us forever and ever. It is His promise.
Love the song, Ms Raitt takes to an unequaled height. My husband died in 1994 and I discovered it after, have listened to this song hundred of times. After all these years it still moves me. Thank you to both artists, Thomson and Raitt.
Oh, Bonnie ... you have such soul in your voice.
i love this song - written by Richard Thompson, and sung by an angel ....

there may be a number of versions of this song by richard thompson but to me it belongs to bonnie!! thanks for posting this classic by this lovely artist.
One of my favourite songs and no one does it better.

I'm drowning in a river of my tears....
One of my very favorite songs, The very best version.
I have this on my iPod. It never gets old!!
I was never a huge Bonnie fan. But I do think she has the best version of this song. And many have done it. Good tuned guitars make a song special. A lot of people overlook guitar tuning when there is more than one playing. Very enjoyable to listen to her version.
One of the best arrangements of this song on UA-cam.
unbelievably beautiful song
Bonnie - after all these years you still turn my crank. You are the lady of the slide guitar.
It is rare that a cover is equal to an original version of a song, this is one cover that is equal. Fabulous!!
This whole concert is great. I have the DVD of it....truly every song performed touches my heart. Bonnie is my hero!!
Mary, which concert is on the dvd? I'd lik to buy it.
Road Tested
I laid my hands on the dvd as well. Always in for trades/swaps.
I have that DVD also, it's awesome
This is so beautiful and soulful
What a phenomenal artist. She was number one in my book the first time I heard her in the 70's. Her voice is phenominal. Her style exquisite.
When she was on the Grammys last night about ten minutes in, I remembered once again that she has more musicality in one finger than just about anyone else in that room......
Perfect voices together. I love listening to this song driving my car at night.
Me too. Beautiful voice, great song. 👍🎵
Now this is what you call real class! absolutely stunning vocals, Just as underrated as the UK's Barbara Dixon.
I knew this song in Dave Gilmour's voice and I thought this is a great song with great emotion and lirics.
But Bonnie put the song still more emotional and she deserves all claps for this. thank you from Brazil.
Great song, great video and great singer
A beautiful version sung by an underrated singer and written by an underrated singer/songwriter..
I love her so much! I saw her in concert and lost my mind 😆
Absolutely simply just beautiful.....what a voice...and blended in perfect harmony....Brilliant lyrics by Richard Thompson....just a gorgeous song.,,Thank you for this lovely upload......TC...
I can't listen without welling up! ❤
@Smashinz2002 I think Bonnie's lovely voice really suits this song. This song needs the long notes.

The original by Richard and Linda Thompson is still the finest.
Just beautiful -- the song, the performance and the artist! Thanks for posting this!!!
I dearly love Sir Dave, but his version can't hold a candle to this.
You can tell Bonnie loves this song.

I have always loved this version. A true, artist- she makes you feel pain for the "other woman." Check out the Corr's version too, less passion, but great family harmony.
Prachtig,,,zeker de tekst❤
one of the best loves songs ive heard
I think this song is on its highest when Bonnie Raitt sings it with one guitar only, no bass or second guitar.
I LOVE YOU BONNIE!
Amazing
Damn Good

Beautiful
@loomisaero I am also in agreement... David Gilmour's version is supercharged with a much more soulful melody, and the guitar part is sprinkled with notes than further enhances the song. But then he is the master of melodic lead guitar.
will certainly check that out.... but in the meantime i must say this is a fabulous cover
The version on "Beat the Retreat" by the Blind Boys of Alabama is extremely good too, as is the one of Bonnie and the "Boys" doing Thompson's "When the Spell is Broken."

Richard Thompson prefers Bonnie's version....and he should know !
Joni Mitchell said she preferred Counting Crowes doing "Big Yellow Taxi," too
That was an awesome cover. My favourite story though is how 9 Inch Nails said they quit performing Hurt after Johnny Cash covered it. "It his song now" was how they put it. Classy

Bonnie, I miss you being my voice & influence.
Hear Alison Krauss cover this on her new album, Paper Airplane. Free at npr.org until the album is released mid-April.
LOVE this version. But the one that blew me away was done by Art Neville!
I love you so much, when we are a part it crushes me. Yet when we meet again I fall in love with you all over again.
@loomisaero Both are great but this song is a lyrical masterpiece. Therefore the vocals far exceed the instrumentation in impact and importance. This version wins, if there must be a "winner."
go bonnie go-
you are my best most trusted friend, I love you Margaret Martinotti
Thanks for the pleasure
@thriftywoman David gilmour ( of Pink Floyd ) also did a great version. check it out on the You tube.

@glennkyle1

@JoyG54 Also try Allison Krauss' version. Truly haunting
