Mike Reed plays "Smoke on the Water" by special request, on his Hammond Organ

  • By very special request from Brent, here is my freeform instrumental version of "Smoke on the Water". A song by the English rock band Deep Purple, it was first released on their 1972 album Machine Head.
    We used to do this in the clubs (my drummer and I) vocals and all, and it was always fun to ad-lib the middle with cool organ stuff.
    That's what you're getting here.....again by very special request; an offer I couldn't refuse! :0)

    Incredible what can be achieved with an old instrument like this and of course a great amount of virtuosity! Thank you so much, you are missed very hard! This video deserves to be kept forever and ever (and maybe to be restored and preserved in a dedicated digital museum).

    I listen to these all day long in our Hammond Organ store in Houston, TX Love it. I never paid much attention to these models of the Hammond organs, but recently one came in on trade that is just like the one you are playing. I'm gonna fix it up. There is so much music in one of those, and it's a shame people throw them away and have no appreciation for those models.

      They are hammond's of course. If you haven't we under the hood yet, be surprised. The designer was all over the place with these A100s with too much icing. They certainly wasn't meant to be moved around. Almost twice as heavy as a B3. I've seen them in churchs. Ive seen a few that's even busier with 2 ranks of tabs and such.
      The mid 60's early 70's were a very tacky period but Laurens still built quality.
      Enjoy Sir and watch the cables and dust

    Wow, you are one TALENTED dude! Much respect!
    Rumor is you take requests....howzabout "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida?" You could have a blast with the drum solo, and then there is that gorgeous organ cadenza afterward, which is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. It'd be a challenge, but I'm sure you're more than up to it!

    "By request" ? OK, how about " Light My Fire " with a Vox sound for some of it. I've seen the Doors 5 times and never did Ray have a Vox as they weren't meant for the world for too long. I bet you could improvise up a cool jam. If you want to, do that song but if not, you're still one of my favorite organists

    • @thepricillove5244
      @thepricillove5244 3 роки тому +1

      He recorded with one. They still had recieving tubes or valves back then. Even that shorts thing for bass note was heavy put out a Lot of heat. It seems he switched to a sample based sound later on. I like the round sine wavy tube sound myself

    • @allareredeemed

      @@thepricillove5244
      What's funny is the piece of crap synth/organ Ray had at the HOF induction. Good lord. Someone there had to have an old M1 or DX7 in their trunk or something. In 5 minutes I could have had a decent Vox patch created.
      I got a kick out of how the bass player contributed wrong notes or at the wrong time. If ya dont know the song, dont be there.
      Rock music died as early as 1971. Yes, there were some good groups after that of course, but the easy success formula's took over along with radio stations not taking requests to shape the play list. Big money usually screws up most things. The thinking since early 1970's has been "stop the real creative music because people will get use to that standard, which is hard to supply." If you can get them all eating a cheese burger, a coke and fries at the drive through window, it's easier to make " cookie cutter country stars and hit songs". Guys like Mike here wing it and dont give a rat so real entertainment still lives on. If he missed a note, he'd probably leave it there for us and not worry. If ya hit that note twice, it's " jazz".

    • @thepricillove5244
      @thepricillove5244 3 роки тому +1

      @@allareredeemed regretfully you are correct. Now the folky stuff: Jim croce, CSN and on occasion Y, Seals & Crofts were coming into their own. That ain't rock. Those that didn't join the 27 club or joined another number later on just went commercial or even worse. I agree like virtual particles in a vacuum they go as quick as they came( sorry I'm a physics fan).
      I The Doors god damnit. Where the hell was the mans rig. It's not like he was arrayed with keyboards like that Emmerson fellow. He didn't use a Hammond so what played was moveable, after a fashion.
      Pitiful thought I
      I'm a keyboardist at a church. That playing along without knowing the song doesn't agree at all.
      If you weren't at rehearsal, crack off.
      I have my reputation to consider. Having garnered a reputation for being picky, hard on drummers and expensive; I'd just as soon retire with the comment well he was a bastard on good days but he delivered the parcels. Like M. Morrison

    • @allareredeemed

      @@thepricillove5244
      With all the great synths now days and many good ones being very affordable, the Vox, Farfisa, Rhodes, and Wurly did more for music back then than all these new synths do. You could not miss that 1960's organ sound and even with their lack of versatility, they spoke powerfully and sounded fresh on every recording.
      The musicians had a huge part in how important the keyboard contribution was but when you look at the basic " 96 Tears " organ parts, a Hammond would never have been as good, nor would someone's cool synth pad. We were part of the most creative and best quality music time in American music.
