      Question, do you think you have like a gene to learn languages faster than others or is it just how you apply yourself. Because I see your wanting to learn french and you were an interperator, so I'm like this is easy for you. I would love to learn spanish but thats about it. I put in about a half hour a day. Another question, did you use the Babbel or Rosetta Stone type courses at all?

    • @EricaRayLanguage
      @EricaRayLanguage  3 роки тому

      @Lend Pipe No, I don't believe learning Spanish came easier to me than it would for anyone else who spent the amount of time with the language that I did. :) However, after learning one foreign language, learning others does become easier because you already know what to do. So in that sense French may not be as much of a challenge for me as if I were starting from scratch. I used Destinos to start Spanish. You can still watch the Destinos videos at this link: education.ket.org/collections/destinos/ although finding the workbooks that I had back then is a challenge sometimes. I think sometimes they're available on Amazon.

      Haha, it's happened to all of us! I suggest taking a bit of time ahead of time to write down a list of resources (videos, etc...) that you're interested in using so that when study time comes all you have to do is jump right in! 😊

    This past week if I'm watching something in Spanish I leave on the Spanish subtitles. That allows me to see the words I already know and start to piece together the storyline. I love that you said that about our brains gravitate towards the dominant language. Your Blueprint was great!

    Yes, "fluency" is quite a vague term. I am a native English speaker learning Spanish, but if you asked me to elaborate about my knowledge of Botany, for example, my response would be very limited even in my mother tongue. That's because I have very little interest in that subject and therefore haven't bothered to learn about it. We become fluent in the things we use/do every day and the things that interest us. :)

    You're great Erica! I'd advise people to travel to these Spanish speaking country or find Spanish speaking friends in your area. My boyfriend didn't speak English so I was forced to learn spanish. And I find that having conversations with people who do not speak English or your language, are the best to learn from. When I talk to fluent English speaking hispanics, they want to talk English and I want to talk Spanish so I found myself not being able to learn much from them.

    this is what I have been telling people who ask me about language learning, and after I tell them "you have to engage with the language" the reply is allways: "but I need someone to explain the grammar to me"
    no, you don´t, besides if you are learning a close language, say spanish, dutch, etc... you will understand, it´s not japanese
    just listen, read, interact with something, you will learn, and be patient

My wife is a native Spanish speaker and both of our kids are fluent….me, not so much. Time for me to level up. I am so happy to have found you, been trying to learn for a while now, did at school but far different to the actual practice. I can read ok for the most part but very very weak on comprehension and conversing, happy when I heard you to refer to your younger days and My Book of Bible Stories, we speak that language together- the Pure Language. I also feel the same way you feel about Destiños- An Introduction to Spanish. I had just finished watching the final episode 52, but plan to watch again - I think very good. I am really looking forward to benefiting from your program.

    yep set some goals for yourself, for me it is being able to learn small phrases through repetition. The more I learn the more I want to learn. Also I learned a complete song in spanish, one of my favorite songs too. Soo I'm thinking if I can learn 5 or 6 more songs in spanish I'll be much more fluent by then. Thanks for the tips Erica, nice to see a "sista" doing this. lol

    With writing do you recommend checking with a translator each sentence or continue writing despite the chance of making mistakes. I have a notebook which I dedicated to Spanish writing where I come up with different sentences and sometimes make mistakes. However using a translator each time can become tiresome. I really want to improve my writing in Spanish so what do you recommend.
    Thank you

    • @EricaRayLanguage
      @EricaRayLanguage  Рік тому +1

      Your writing will improve in time as you continuously spend time with the language through listening and reading and adjust your own writing according to what you notice, so there's no need to obsess over everything being perfect. But using a translator occasionally or for things that you're lost on won't hurt and can help you learn new words and sentence structure. If you have a tutor or Spanish-speaking friends with proficient writing abilities then that's a wonderful way to get feedback as well.

    I've learned a good bit of Hindi by watching lots of Bollywood movies with the English subtitles on. It was never my intent to learn the language, but I realized after a while I could pick up on the errors in the subtitles because I actually knew what the actors were saying. I want to learn Spanish now. I'll try your example of watching movies without the subtitles to see if I learn faster.

    • @EricaRayLanguage
      @EricaRayLanguage  3 роки тому +2

      I'll be curious to see how it goes. Let us know! I don't know what your current level of Spanish is. If you already have some vocabulary then you may be able to pick up on some language with no subtitles (the point in which I personally would watch a movie in a foreign language is when I already know some of the language). But if you're starting from zero and you like using movies to break into a language then perhaps watching something that you've already seen in English or throwing on those English subtitles just for round 1 so that you know the plot would work well, do you think? And then going back to it more times, of course, with less of the English crutch?🙂

      @EricaRayLanguage  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, there is a time and a place for subtitles, and your method of only looking at them when. you don't understand something is fine. But many of us find that impossible to do. If the subtitles are on, we MUST look at them. I talk about the use of subtitles and captions more extensively in this video: ua-cam.com/video/6kWqj3YXg1A/v-deo.html It's fine if you use the English subtitles as you watch, perhaps the first or second time, but after that, it's best to put them away and listen exclusively in Spanish. So basically, if you're willing to view multiple times, you can use subtitles as a tool. Too many people just come to depend on them exclusively, which is where the problem lies. 😀
