  • Welcome to another episode of our camper journey through Beskid Niski! This time, we stop in a small yet exceptionally interesting village - Komańcza. This place hides many treasures, especially when it comes to wooden architecture.
Komańcza is a village with a rich history dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries when it belonged to the Sanok land in the Ruthenian Voivodeship. Over time, borders and administration changed here, but the history of this place is incredibly colorful. Notably, the victorious battle of Polish partisans against Austrian troops took place here in 1849, and the so-called Komańcza Republic was established after World War I.
During World War II, Komańcza also experienced dramatic events, including the internment of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński and the atrocities committed by Ukrainian nationalists, who murdered many residents, including teachers Ludwika Drozd and Maria Kułak.
Today, however, Komańcza is not just a site of historical events but also an oasis of peace and beauty. It boasts many historical landmarks, including the site of a World War II plane crash and the memorial room of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in the convent of the Sisters of Nazareth.
One of the most fascinating aspects of this village is its wooden architecture. Komańcza lies on the wooden architecture trail of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. Walking its streets, you can admire beautifully adorned churches, chapels, and traditional houses, which are an extraordinary attraction for history and architecture enthusiasts.
Therefore, I warmly invite you to this magical place where time flows more slowly, and every corner hides an extraordinary story. See you in Komańcza!
In the film, you will see where to park and two must-visit places in the area. The Nazareth Convent in Komańcza is a magical sanctuary that has been operating since May 1928, and the history behind it is breathtaking.
As you head toward the convent, the first thing you will see is the road leading to it, adorned with a sign bearing the name of the sanctuary and information about the distance. This marks the beginning of your journey into the history and spirituality of this place.
The history of the convent dates back to its founding when it was established as the Home of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, with its main seat in Rome. In the early 1920s, five sisters lived in a rented house, and then construction began on a distinctive wooden-brick building in a mountain clearing, which was completed in 1929. This building, located at an altitude of approximately 520 m above sea level, became the site of a semi-public chapel dedicated to St. Thérèse of Lisieux. The consecration took place on August 12, 1931. Part of the convent was designated for the nuns, while the other part was for visiting guests.
During the difficult times of the German occupation, the convent became a refuge for many people. Germans were quartered within its walls, but at the same time, the nuns provided assistance to sought-after priests and individuals of Jewish descent, helping them escape abroad and maintaining contact with couriers. Even during the fights with partisans from 1944 to 1948, the sisters continued to help those in need.
One of the most well-known events associated with the convent was the stay of Primate Stefan Wyszyński from 1955 to 1956 when he was interned. Today, visitors have the opportunity to tour the room where he lived and the chapel where he prayed.
The Church of the Protection of the Mother of God in Komańcza. This unique temple, part of the Podkarpackie Wooden Architecture Trail, is a reconstruction of a building from the 19th century that burned down in 2006. Originally built as a Greek Catholic church, it now belongs to the Orthodox parish.
The history of this site dates back to 1800-1803 when the first church was erected on the site of the previous one that was destroyed by fire. In 1834, an iconostasis by Aftanazy Rużyłowicz was installed in it, and in the following years, it underwent many renovations and modernizations. Despite being closed by authorities in 1961, it was transferred to the Orthodox parish in 1963.
After the tragic fire in 2006, the church was rebuilt according to the original plan. Thanks to the efforts and support of the community and funds obtained from various institutions, a solemn consecration of the restored building took place in 2010. Surrounded by the stone wall of the former cemetery, the church impresses not only with its architecture but also with its picturesque surroundings. It’s an extraordinary place worth visiting to explore the history and tradition of Orthodoxy in Poland.

Pozdrawiam Was serdecznie, jesteście wspaniałą parą 👍🙂 . Polecam wam jednak zwiedzić klasztor porozmawiać z przemiłym i siostrami o Kardynale Wyszyńskim, spędzić magiczne chwile w ciszy w maleńkiej klasztornej kaplicy. Oglądam was od dawna więc to kwestia czasu kiedy będziecie w pobliżu 🙂
