Each year when I see this competition video pop up, I watch and I hope to see something, anything, different but I never do.
The obstacles never change. The “challenges” never challenge.
Other than the RIT bag use, there isn’t much RIT to the competition.
Great job by the competitors for sure but something that really challenges their RIT skills needs to be added.

Understand where you're coming from, unfortunately we are just one of the teams who have competed in the past and don't have an answer for you other than our firefighters train to do their best and represent their agency no matter what the "challenge" is. You should reach out to the Florida Rit Operations Group and inquire further. floridaritoperationsgroup.org/contact/ Thanks for watching the video.

@@swfdinfo if I may ask, by your previous experience, is there more to the competition that just never gets posted?
What I mean is is there individual events prior to this? Something that qualifies a team to compete in the events we see in this video?
Or is the only event that makes up the competition?
For example, my department competed for many years in the TERC vehicle rescue and IRECA technical rescue competitions.
In those we had to successfully complete and score enough points to proceed to the next phase of the competition.
Is the same done for the RIT competition?

@@ritirons2726 Happy to answer this question, thanks for asking. The video we have posted here is actually the first of two rounds of the RIT competition at Fire Rescue East (FRE) in Florida. The first round is open to any department who wants to compete, typically there are about 20 teams total. The top 5 teams from the first round of competition move on to the second day, where a different RIT challenge is set up for teams to compete in. This second day of competition is modeled after a true line-of-duty death situation. The teams are evaluated in both rounds by how quickly they complete the course, as well as their technique in doing so. Teams can incur a time penalty if they demonstrate some sort of improper manuever or technique, i.e. not sounding the floor before entering a phase of the course. The team who finishes the second challenge the fastest with the fewest time penalties wins the FRE RIT Competition. Unfortunately, SWFD finished sixth, missing the final day by one place in the standings, so this is the only video we have of our team competing. Hope this helps!
