  • Video lecture for PHYS 130 at the University of Alberta. When building precision, optical instruments some of the approximations which are made when dealing with lenses and spherical mirrors do not work leading to defects in the image produced which are called aberrations. Here we discuss and demonstrate two such effects: spherical and chromatic aberrations.

Very illuminating… what a noble way to follow up so many great 007 films.

At last an explanation of these issues! Many thanks.
I hear that spherical aberation is cited as a problem in astronomical reflecting telescopes so why don't they use parabolic mirrors?

Purely because it is much, much cheaper to make spherical mirrors than parabolic ones given that the surface has to be accurate at scales of the wavelength of light. You do see parabolic reflects for satellite dishes though because you can make these by bending metal in a press and this is easily good enough for millimetre precision which is all you need with the longer microwave/radio wavelengths.

Interesting video Roger. I was wondering if you have a more in-depth discussion on comatic aberrations or if you could comment on the following; will changes in aperture affect coma, if so how?
