The title makes it sound as if Detroit is an iconic Toronto landmark lol. Toronto will lose much more than a few landmarks, as it should and there is nothing really iconic about buildings, unless you belong to an exclusive club of architects or really like rectangles or something.
That's what people said about buildings from a hundred years ago, that they were too stodgy and old fashioned, and the new modern ones were in style and inspiring, and now we look back at those old buildings with reverence, while disparaging our own efforts. You may see a bunch of rectangles, but in time those buildings will be looked at as fondly as we do Union Station, the Fairmont and Casa Loma.
@@ScruffyWarlord what? I’m an urban planner and funding for repurposing buildings from office to residential costs money that only senior govnts can fund. It’s info based off the news from Calgarys office conversion to residential based on their govnts funding for it. If you actually read anything on land economics instead of ‘going outside and touching grass’ ud know what this meant. But that would probably be too high level for you
Smaller buildings could be converted to residential usage. But I don’t believe the larger towers would have the water storage capacity, or the ability to add it.
Let's try not to repeat the mistakes of our past, where we tore down beautiful iconic buildings because they grew too old and out of style. Hopefully the buildings emblematic of the city in it's different eras can be preserved or used somehow. Just think back to all the iconic buildings and businesses we've lost in this city to be replaced with condos? I know we need to build homes, but surely there are better places then atop the World's Biggest Bookstore, and if it must be there, at least keep something of the old building around. This city has been here for only a short time, just over 200 years, and we must do our utmost to make sure it stands in glory for another 200.
Repurpose them if not for residential then as entrainment zones.....bowling alley, indoor mini golf....restaurants...bars...service related vs goods related
Maybe there is room to turn these commercial buildings into residential ones…. With the housing crisis, think the demand would be high, especially for small 2 bedroom units
Wait, quickly convert half the towers to condos, Los Angeles residents who lost their homes can live there temporarily. And if they just have to go to a big city ocassionally, Toronto is not too far away. Just tell Detroit to officially cede the condo units to be part of Los Angeles with its own zip code. Status is a nutty thing in L.A.
In Toronto, if anybody has any common sense, we could turn those into affordable housing for the homeless. At least the buildings are making money. Just gotta keep upkeep. You know the maintenance. I’ll be a lot cheaper for the people
To compare this too toronto is laughable. This would ne like tearing down half of the cn tower or at least first canada place or scotia bank building or some of those iconic black td towers.Ya no comparison🙄
I didn't realize Detroit was such an iconic Toronto landmark.

This lady knows nothing. Toronto is growing not even close to peaking yet.
Your AI title maker needs replacing with an English speaker.
I'm still sad when Toronto lost the Statue of Liberty? Any idea where it is?
As long as it’s not the CN tower, then who cares.
How would they take down the CN tower lol!
Or the Royal York
Some buildings made in the 1980s get renovated. Others don't.
That’s so wasteful to consider demolition. Why not repurpose the buildings or house those in need.
because it costs more and Trump wouldn't fund that
@@mymocs61 wow Trump really lives rent free in your head. Go outside for a walk and get some fresh air. It will help you.

Detroit is a beautiful part of Toronto. Please don't let them take it away.

If Toronto can attract more business to locate downtown, that will take care of the vacancies.
If, Toronto is run by Marxists that hate business and jack up taxes.
I have a remarkable grasp of the obvious too.
@CityNews the OPG building at University Ave and Collage will be vacant in the next year or so as they are moving to Pickering (if I remember).
Not coming back to the office
Every since 1974 losses can be harvested for tax gain caused developers to stop building housing. Those buildings needs to be made int housing.

makes me think what the state of the original World Trade Center would be today if they were still standing.
Maybe there is room to turn these commercial buildings into residential ones…. With the housing crisis, think the demand would be high, especially for small 2 bedroom units
Apparently the challenge is that it would require retrofitting the building to the point that it’s much cheaper to build off from scratch.
Would be a shame if Citytv's former home at 299 Queen Street West got the wrecking ball one day.
Why they put the dude outside to have a zoom call..

Is the issue empty buildings? If so, house the homeless, for pete sakes

The cost of do that would be astronomical. It wouldn’t make any sense financially for the downtown commercial buildings converted to residential.
The new concept looks a bit risqué no?
Business is retreating and these rather young buildings are empty. They never should have been built in the first place.
The Detroit buildings will have planes flown into them, is that it?
Traffic is worse...crime is worse....everyone hates living here...yet rent just keeps going up😂❤🤡🇨🇦
If markets were actually free, rental prices of vacant units would drop until they were occupied

Welcome to the crash
Toronto's architecture is less than memorable. What a waste, especially TD Bank.
