Quick & Easy Lumber Rack and Scrap Wood Organization System

- Watch me show you how I built a quick and easy lumber storage system real quick.
I needed a new system for storing my lumber, and I wanted to accomplish a few different things. First, I wanted to store my lumber vertically. Second, I wanted a system for organizing and storing my scraps more easily. And third, I wanted a place to store plywood and other sheet material. I think I accomplished all three.

When I do shop projects, I like to incorporate at least a couple of ideas that make it more complicated than it needs to be, it’s all gained experience for when I’m building ‘real’ furniture. Great vid as usual👍
For sure, that is a smart way to look at it! Thanks for watching, Neil!
I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who hangs onto even small off cuts... "yeah, its small, but it's Walnut! Thanks for this Shaun.
Haha, very true! And this was after a massive purge of the even smaller scraps! Thanks for watching!
I just came across this video. Really neat system. You "just slapped it together" with more precision than a lot of people do with finer projects.
Thanks William! This was a quick build, but has been one of the most used pieces of "furniture" I have ever built.
Love doing shed jobs! It's yours, take pride and do it well. Love it.
If I had a CNC I would definitely start with shop projects. Practice on things that don’t matter as much. Great idea. Got me rethinking my lumber storage.
Yep, definitely lessens the anxiety factor! Thanks for watching!
Wonderful video! It may only be a minor shop project for you, but a lot of people would find this handy. Thank you.
Very true! I always say if even one person benefits from it, then I am doing my job. Thanks for watching!
Amazing wood project! Congratulations!
Thank you!
I knew you couldn't just do some mundane shop project without spicing it up somehow! TransAmerica cool. Was looking at that building yesterday while I was in the area. Always liked it myself. Thanks Shaun.
Yeah, ever since I was a kid I loved the look of that building. Thanks for watching, Dan!
“The bevel is in the details” ?!?!? That’s simply awesome... :D
Haha, I've said it before, and I'll say it again! Thanks for watching!
Nice one Shaun! It's funny, I love shop projects. They are how I procrastinate on building drawer boxes.
PS I spotted the massive Alm Fab sticker at 2:01 I forgot you got a big one.... That's hilarious 😂
Haha, fair enough! I usually procrastinate with far less productive things. I think you and Maker Monster Jake were the first two maker stickers I ever got. I remember thinking oh shit, is this something we do? And probably ordered stickers a couple days later.
Fun video with great music (again). You're a talented story teller!
Thanks Jay! I always wonder if my storylines are making any sense, so I am glad to hear it!
Much love for calling it the Sears Tower and not the Willis Tower!
From a native Chicagoan.
Yeah, I have a hard time when they change the names on iconic stuff like that. Thanks for watching!
Great build!! I really enjoyed the look of the cabinet door. Having lived in both Chicago and SF, I’m fairly biased in saying they both have incredible skylines with some amazing architecture and the TransAmerica building is one of my faves as well.
Thanks Scott! Yeah, ever since I was a kid I have loved that building. And you are right both Chicago and SF have fantastic skylines! Thanks for watching!
I flashed back to Philosophy 101 with the use of the word Utilitarian. It is good to see how the precise organized people approach these things. Like measuring or being precise. In work on the a messy shop denotes a creative mind...
I always think about stuff like this. My brain needs things to be pretty organized and I feel like it allows me to focus more on the creative stuff. But I also understand the messy shop idea too. Who knows? Thanks for watching, Bob!
Your shop is a dream shop. I was giving you a hard time for something I envy.
Love the bevel in the detail
The perfect finishing touch.
I gave you a thumbs up for the door design 👍🥃🏴
Right on, glad you dig it! Thanks Kenny!
looks great. I really need to sort my storage out
Yeah, it was a really nice feeling to get everything organized. Thanks for watching!
Love your humor! Also great build
Right on, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
You were proud of yourself with that last little rhyme...if you're got the time. ha ha. I like how the foggy door carving came out. Nice solution.
Haha, have to be at least a little bit proud! And yeah, the foggy door was a happy accident, for sure. Thanks for watching, Bruce!
You "just slapped it together". Good one, Shaun.
Haha, the best way to put things together! Thanks for watching!
I miss this guy’s videos
Where is he gone?
Very nice, enjoyed it very much. Even when the project is something rather simple and straight forward your stuff looks as we say in Puerto Rico "de lujo" (luxurious). I'm just getting started in woodworking (just retired as a Drafting Instructor) hope to someday do good work. Was practicing day before yesterday with the router, wasn't pretty although at the end it kind of improved. Take care.
Thanks Ray! Glad to hear you are getting into woodworking, I'm sure you will pick it up quickly with a background in drafting! Good luck with it!
Utilitarian, but still great craftsmanship and lots of tips along the way. Way to go!
Right on, glad to hear it! Thanks David!
Great video.
Thank you!
When it comes to woodwork or software, it’s better the bevel you know than the bevel you don’t.
Haha, ain't that the truth!
I love the music you use in your videos.
Thank you! Picking the music is one of my favorite parts.
You even built in a Safe Room !!! Sweet !!!
Just in case!
Don't know if you guys in the US ever saw Fred Penner ( Canadain Kids show in the 80's but your intro reminded me of that show. He used to climb into a log and come out on the other side in his secret place where he would sing songs like the Cat Came Back.
I just googled him and he looks super familiar, must be some vague childhood memory of watching him. Maybe I should start a children's woodworking show.
@@shaunboydmadethis I will get my kids to watch :)
Nice and clean storage saves time as well . And I would say; 'Shop projects are okay if your CNC wants to obey!
That is very true, good call! Thanks for watching!
Man, this is awesome! I dig it!
Really appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Great vid, well balanced with you and tools and action and clips.... At least Greg respects good architecture
Glad to hear it! Greg seems to have pretty good taste. Thanks for watching!
Cool beans! I dig it, Shaun!
Thanks Marylou! Glad to hear it!
Nice job buddy
Thank you!
Lovin the music buddy!! Great video!
Thanks, man! Glad you dig it!
Your a hoot man😀 nice project. Vertical is the way to go.
Yeah, I am loving it so far! Thanks for watching, man!
Time. Dime. Rhymes!
Sublime. 😎
Those rhymes are just fine!
Nice sticker at 12:38 . I like the big blue one 😉
Haha, that is a good looking sticker, had to get prime real estate.
@@shaunboydmadethis haha I appreciate it bud
YEA!!!! Glue and screws!!! My joinery of choice 👍🏼🐢🌮
Works like a charm!
Can you make a video on how you worked your way up to the incredible shop and tools you have at this point?!
Good idea, lumber should probably get out of my living room.
Yeah, houseguests always give you weird looks first time they come over.
Shop projects are just fine...as long as they're not mine! : -) Nice video, Shaun, I enjoyed it.
Haha, I like that! And I agree! Thanks for watching!
dat drill bit method. wow!
I know! So simple, but works so well!
I like this, and I need this...
I had no idea how much I needed this until I built it.
Shaun , looks👌neat. 😊
Thanks Mahendra! 🙌
I love working on my shop I guess that’s why it’s bad ass
Right on! Glad you are into it. I'm slowly trying to get myself to enjoy it more.
Ha you said If you feel like something like this woodwork in your shop.... true story. Hey I was reading that Office Space is 20 years old now and the red stapler wasn't a thing before the movie but now it's a hot seller..still to this day.! 👍👍🍻
Ah man! I didn't even realize that one, good catch! And dang, 20 years old?! That freaks me out.
Yeah and Matrix as well, both 1999 - I think they are my two of my top three movies ever - along with Point Break (1991). Just realised that's with Keanu Reeves as well. Whoah!😲
any ideas for storing various sizes of osb and ply wood
Excellent video Shaun Boyd. I really like your round corner jig and want to copy that. What specific kind of can are you using and do you know if I can get in Scandinavia?
Just a regular old paint can, the best corner rounding jig you can get. I think this one was specifically a polyurethane can which should give you similar results. Thanks for watching!
I like the huge variety of MLB hats that you have hanging. Which one is your favorite
It's always a tough choice, depends on the day.
Badass intro
Haha, it was worth the squeeze.
I dig it.
And what's wrong with lumber in the living room?
Haha, nothing wrong with that, maybe it will be the new trend in interior design! Thanks for watching!
Uhhhh. You're not married, are you? :)
Nice build. At the end there I thought you were going to say "This project was built in front of a live studio audience." 😉
Haha! Might have to get some canned laughter going soon. Thanks for watching!
I love my notification bell. It was off on your channel.... again. Also if Greg was really from Chicago he would know it's called the Willis Tower now. I'm starting to doubt Greg.
Yeah, if you UA-cam does one thing well, it is messing up the subscription system. And Greg is old school Chicago, he can't get behind the new name. Thanks for watching!
Loved the video as always Shaun! But after (1) and (B) is there no (iii)? 9:23
Haha, glad somebody caught that. I don't even know what comes next, though. I never make lists longer than two things.
“The Bevels in the Details” lmao Just Brilliant
Haha, it is too good not to use!
"Why the heck did you call your brand Festool?? It's dumb!"
- "Welllllllll our marketing guy told us we had to think up something that rhymed with Best Tool"
Haha that intro! I'm 9 seconds in and laughing already!
Haha! Glad you got a kick out of it!
"For a couple reasons, 1.... and B" Hahaha... I do that all the time and then I skip right to 4. Fun project Shaun! Are we going to see you up at Maker Faire again this year? Oh and I'm going to need you to come this weekend M'kay... Great.
Haha, glad somebody caught that one! Not sure if I will make it up there for Maker Faire, but I am definitely going to try! Thanks, Dave!
Super groovy Shaun, glad your new space is working out well.
I’m often kind of amazed at folks who spend more time making things for their shops than “making”.
The bevel made me do it.
Yeah, I feel ya. I just want to stick to making the good stuff. Thanks for watching, Randall!
Hey Shaun...I know what you could use the cabinet for - it could be a giant pie safe! That being said - be safe and don't eat stale pie!
Oh, good call! I do love me a good pie.
That intro.... hahahah! I think that closet is the hidden access to your mancave, well hidden from your wife!
Haha! My man cave is just me sitting in the dark inside the cabinet. Thanks for watching!
@@shaunboydmadethis hahaha it doesn't matter how big or small that mancave is, as long as she doesn't find you to do the dishes hahahaha
hello i was wondering if you have some wood scraps that i could have?
i want to make a project with wood but wood is very limited where i live
that kind of vertical storage doesn't bend the wood over time?
I guess there is the potential for that, but lumber has already been sitting like that for a long time at the lumberyard, and everything gets milled before I use it, so it isn't something that I worry about too much.
wish I had room to set up a CNC like that, I'd love to get the biggest version of the x-carve
It is definitely a nice tool to have.
@@shaunboydmadethis yea maybe one day I'll have room for one and be able afford it
I didn't see any links in the description about your impatience for shop projects... ;)
Haha! Shoot forgot to put that one in there, I have an entire website dedicated to that subject.
What's the advantage of using the table saw over track saw for long rips?
I would say speed and repeatability. But both get the job done.
Always sit on your builds!! 🤣
It's the official quality control test around here.
what did you do before making awesome projects? were you an architect?
I considered becoming an architect, but went the business/econ route instead. Got an Office Space-like job straight out of college that I hated and eventually ended up working in operations for film festivals for a while before going full-time with the furniture.
The bevel made him do it.
I'm guessing your image of the Pyramid is about 53' taller than the actual building.( that is if you had to chisel out a 1/4" sliver) This new added square footage could be called the "Boyd Space" . Check with rental agent for pricing and availability.
I think that math checks out! And that is a good idea, a little rental income sounds pretty nice.
i love shop project more
Thanks for watching!
Is there a big time difference between Greg on dados versus drill bit method?
That's a good question. I have never used Greg to cut dados like this. I imagine once you had everything dialed in and setup on the CNC, it would go pretty quickly. But that is the part I never want to spend time on, especially when I can start cutting them within 30 seconds on my table saw.
Nicely done, but would the door opening the other way not been even more handy ?
I was worried the plywood storage against the wall would eventually get in the way of the door if it opened the other way. We will see if I eventually regret my decision. Thanks for watching!
Question: why you don't usually run plywoods through the drum sander? Is it because the very could be easily sand out?
Most plywoods have a very thin veneer and a drum sander could easily be too aggressive and sand through the veneer.
Yep, exactly what Dave said.
Oh brother !! I feel your pain. Shop projects bore me to death. I have two mortgages to pay and need to do real work. - T shirts arrived in Canada and they’re awesome. I wanted to leave a review but your site has no review section. Thanks a lot though.
Yeah, that is the exact feeling I get when doing shop projects. Glad the shirts made it to you safely! Never thought about a review section on my website, but thanks for considering it!
Great video. Agree about Transamerica. So sad ugly Sales Force One bldg dominates SF skyline now. : ( Your shop projects come out better than my best furniture projects. Ha. : ) Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, that building really changed the skyline, and I can't say I'm a fan. Thanks for watching!
Using a skateboard board for a dolly...my brother! I thought I was the only one.
It works like a charm, and I always have one nearby!
Wait...is tht door for another realm? 😁
Yeah, it is a very small and dark realm. Kind of feels like the inside of a cabinet. 😂
What computer program do you use for drawings?
I use Fusion 360.
Liked the video at 0:04 lol
Haha! Glad you enjoyed that!
7:41. Shaun you actually look almost pissed that you had to make this! You know no wood project (even a shop project ) can be done in a jiff. What is wrong with pilot holes, glue (or not), and screws? You probably did not even have to do the dadoes. Not everything has to have a mid-century modern vibe, or be artsy-fartsy or fancy pants. You don't even need Greg's help. I love it!. Thank you for this video. I started off smiling at your expression, now I am laughing. Love you to death Shaun.
Thanks for saying all of this, Juliet! I do get pretty caught up in the idea that everything has to be a masterpiece or have some super original design aspect. It is a nice to feeling to just build something and (try) not to worry about it being a work of art. Someday I might fully embrace the shop project!
Chillin like a villain 🤣🤣🤣
Haha, it is what Greg is best at.
👍
🙌
I thought you were going with a Buzz from Home Alone reference with your list, but you never had a "D"
Haha, I could never deliver it as well as Buzz!
C A B I N E N T
But where do you store the sheet goods?
I left a gap between the wall and the cabinet for sheet goods.
Shaun Boyd Ah, the cheater slot. 😁
I'd say it wasn't "user error," it was simply a PEBKAC. 👍
Oh, and if you don't know, PEBKAC is an acronym for Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair. 😉
Haha, yes that sounds more like it. Glad I know the technical term now.
Классный ты парень, видео твои интересные, жаль не владею английским!
Спасибо!
Quick and easy. *cuts ply on gigantic commercial table saw*
Exactly, quick and easy.
Shaun Boyd for professionals
For some, the shop is their living room...lol. It is my man cave sometimes.
That is very true, I am right there with you!
Why do I feel you are talking to me directly (0.52 secs.). I like shop projects...so thanks for spending some time. You may continue.
Haha! I felt like I had to explain myself a bit.
Second?! Damn, I be slipping.
Dang! You'll get it back, I'm sure.
What is the story....morning glory!
Office space!
"Hiiiiii Shaun, how's it going? Yeaaaah! I'm going to need you......to go ahead....and come on in this weekend. Ok? Great! Thanks and we start at 8am"
Funny...I have more fun doing shop projects. I will start out to build a table and after 1/2 day I am putting up shelves, making jigs, or reorganizing.....but even so, I have never used the words "aesthetically pleasing" in discussing utilitarian (aka shop) projects. I am wondering if you were a poli-sci major....or perhaps english literature? If you happen to have an email that you dont mind giving out, i will send you a pic of my jach's flannel shirts. Yes, I am a bit obseessed with them. You know how flannel many times is either too thin or too heavy? Jach's never are. The same is true re the colors. Some designers never seem to get the colors or patterns correct. J's seem to never miss. Anyway, if you see one among the many that I have.....that you like....it would be my pleasure to send it to you.....unless it is one of my favorites. In that case, the only thing left to say would be: "Too bad, so sad."
Yeah, some people dig the shop projects, different strokes, I suppose. I was actually an Econ major in college, go figure. And I am beginning to think you own stock in Jachs or something! But I hear what you are saying, it is hard to find that perfect thickness in a flannel, I am intrigued. And sure, here is my contact page on my website, www.shaunboydmadethis.com/contact, which also has my email address.
Shop improvement videos are my favorite though! Guess I will just have to unsubscribe... jk still like your channel
Haha, I actually have a few more in mind that I hope to do in the coming months. I'm slowly trying to trick myself into enjoying them more!

No you didn’t just cut a full sheet on the table saw like a boss. You dog, you.
Go big or go home.
Hmmm. Better the bevel you know that the details you forgot .... And, it all hinged on timing too ...
Also my fave in architecture. Although Frank Lloyd Wright is my favorite architect ... I was there when it was topped out... a loooong time ago...
Have to agree, it doesn't get much better than Frank Lloyd Wright. And that must have been pretty cool to see the Transamerica Pyramid gets finished! Thanks Clyde!
