Taming the feisty sibling - orange wild (feral) kitten - personality matters when taming

  • In this video I show how personality can really affect how fast or slow a feral kitten is able to be tamed. Most of these siblings tamed right up...but this orange one was a special case...

Pretty much. I have the alpha queen from the litter of strays found in a small town south of my city. Fierce doesn't even begin to describe her. Adopted her at 8 weeks old and my God she gave her bug brothers (my rescued adults) a run for their money. TO this day, and even though she's the last of the three, she is still my loyal feisty tiny security guard. Basically a watch dog in a cat suit.

    • @damagedvixen1779

That happened to me when I was a kid, it’s totally true!
My sister stumbled across this lady that just let cats breed in her backyard without trying to help and then the babies would crawl in with these huge dogs who’d use them as chew toys. Disgusting, and cruel! I could only save two, one who was in the pen with a dog and ultimately didn’t last after a week and the other who was hiding in a thorn bush and made me COME AFTER HER. She was the most feral thing but the second we got her in the car and saw her injured kitten in my bra she went from hissing at us both to just my mom. Then she followed me around everywhere and would throw a tantrum if I was somewhere she couldn’t get to because the door was closed (I.e. the bathroom...) she chased the dogs out of my room and would sleep under the covers with me.
She repaid me though. She caught an absolutely GIANT rat that was chewing through pipes, herded people away from a snake that got into my room until we went to bed and attacked it at night, and even started howling and making a racket to attract my moms attention after i passed out in the shower.
My fierce little Lion guarded me until the day she died... I miss her dearly.

I don't. She was overly rough and it was no surprise that the kitten responded that way to what would have appeared as an aggressive hand. Being a lot more gentle, moving slower, and approaching from below instead of from above and around the head would have achieved a much faster result with far less aggression.

They do actually. If they are around really calm people friendly cats then that rubs off on them. And if they have one sibling that is very hissy then that can make them more scared. That's why the very scared hissy feral moms will teach the kittens to be afraid of people too so we like to fix and return the moms when the kittens are weaned age so they don't have her scared influence. 🙂

Generally they are you are correct. They can be female though, a lot of orange cats born female don't survive long of have a deformity. My sweet little orange baby got kicked out of the litter for being the smallest and had only 3 and a half legs. Vet said she wouldn't live past a year, she lived to be sixteen. Very wonderful years 🙂

The best way to tame an upset kitten like this is to not touch, or reach for them. We had one kitten that was wild. We didn't realize we had her. So we had her inside. Every evening I'd sit on the couch and talk to her in very soothing tones. The first night she was way on the other side of a very big room hiding. Each night she would be a little bit closer. She would watch me and listen. Soon she was 4, 5 feet in front of me. I kept my hands at my side. The next night she was perched on the very end of my knee. I still kept my hands at my side. The next night she finally couldn't take it any more. She ran down my leg and rubbed noses with me. From then on I could pet her, pick her up, everything and she was fine. She was fiercely loyal to me and would turn herself inside out to run swiftly to me when I called her. She didn't allow anyone else to touch her though.

The most feisty of kittens make to most loyal and lovey cats(for the persons that win them over) In my experience. My Feisty boy was totally feral when I found him and his sister. The sister was off the wall happy to be found and came right up to me. the other was all hisses and spit unit I could wrangle him up. I adopted out the friendly one with in a few days and figured I would acclimatize the non people cat. He spent a few days figuring things out and we clicked(he's my cat boy now). He turned into a great cat; Great mouser, companion, and character!. Sometimes though when I have to take call on speaker phone he gets jealous... He'll throw a fit and start with loud meows that turn into bites to the hands and wrist(they aren't hard or even near leaving a mark on skin bites), but he still acts this way only when I am on the phone in speaker mode. If he can't hear the person on the other line there isn't a problem, but if I do speaker phone he'll be there listening, complaining, and trying to pull me away.

My cat Kiwi was feral. He tamed quite easily because he is extremely docile and playful.
My first cat Goku had a feral mum and a feral sister (the two were my aunt's cats). The sister was born in an house, and received human contact from the start, but she grew up to be feral. When Goku was born, my aunt gave her to me when she was just 45 days old, in fear she could become feral as her sister did.
Goku was tame and easy going around people, but she had the same aggressive personality of her mum and her sister, so i can beliveve she could easily become feral aswell. She stayed with me for 19 years, she died this summer.

A few years ago my coworker and I use to find kittens and bring them to the shelter i volunteered with to be tamed. Some of them were ok with humans, other were like your fiesty kitten. It made me think if we were doing the right thing trying to adopt them out. Maybe they wanted to just be outside and wild and free. We bought in 10 kitten, but the shelter made us stop because they were a "handful" lol.

Bravo. My advice is never give up. I adopted 2 feral kittens (brother and sister) at about 3 months old so there was a lot of hissing and hiding and general aggro to begin with. I'd just sit near them and ignore them and they gradually calmed down (and soon became a bit pissed off about the ignoring thing) until, after over 2 years, the penny finally dropped and within a few days of each other they both became lap cats - one of the best moments of my life.

The kitties are scared, but the ginger is braver than the others. She tries to protect herself. When you try to befriend a scared kitty like that, try to speak softly first.
