In RIDING THE TIGER: Vladimir Putin’s Russia and the Uses of War (AEI Press, 2023), AEI Senior Fellow Leon Aron chronicles the emergence of wartime Russia through hundreds of Russian-language sources and arresting images. Dr. Aron recounts that it is no accident President Vladimir Putin’s “new Russia” is filled with the military pageantry of Stalin’s reign-- complete with statues of the Soviet leader himself-- monumental parades of weaponry, school children dressed as soldiers, and nuclear weapons blessed by priests. The book’s portrayal of Putin’s obsessive quest for militarized patriotism is both chilling and, as the former Russian ambassador Michael McFaul describes it, “a fantastic read.”
