A biographical film on the foremost woman vocalist of the Kirana Gharana of Hindustani classical music, Gangubai Hangal. Gangubai's family came from the village Hangal but she has been living in the twin city of Dharwar and Hubli in North Karnataka. Gangubai learnt music under Sawai Gandharva. She had to face many odds in those days. The Kirana Gharana has been the foremost in synthesizing the Carnatic music with the Hindustani. Ustad Abdul Karim Khan who could sing the Carnatic ragas with a typical flavour of the Carnatic stylesing. Ragas such Hamsadhvani, Kalavati, and Kanada have now become part of the Hindustani classic music repertoire. Abhogi, a variation of the raga Kanada is part of Gangubai's favourite ragas. This film includes an interview with Gangubai Hangal.
It is precious documentary. It is her blessings on me whatever I am in vocal music field. I am proud and blessed by Dr. Gangubai Hangal accepting me as her disciple since 1980. My today's all credits in the field are her warm blessings.

Since the commentary is in English, it would be appropriate to have English subtitles at the places where the talk is in Marathi and Kannada. The documentary would be appreciated by many who do not understand Marathi.
i agree - but it is possible for us now to download it, put the subtitles and then upload again. Please see one article on her here - www.timesquotidian.com/2013/07/14/remembering-gangubai-hangal-1913-2009/
OK.
I would be great too, for the ignorants like me, to put indications about the music which accompanies the documentary, which ragas or compositions she is singing. Would be great!
What was the point in interviewing her in Marathi when the artists mothertongue was Kannada, no offense to anyone though? It could have been Kannada and then subtitles. I say this because, wherever necessary and important, Gangubai-ji uses Kannada. It captures the essence of what she means to say. After all, feelings ooze out better in one's own mothertongue.
Interview can be in any language she can speak. Her music concerts were organised before large Marathi audiences and there she always spoke Marathi. If some interviewer asks a question in Marathi what is wrong in answering it in Marathi? Dou you expect only Kannada speaker should ask her questins and only Kannada audiences should express their opinions?
Both Gangubai and the interviewer Vijaya Mulay are proficient in Marathi. No point complaining
Because She Had Marathi Background..Not Kanadi..!
Please accept my
Thousands of thanks for providing opportunities to see,-& listen to famous KIran's Gharana Artists, DHARWAD is proud of this Gharana,my sincere thanks to your team,Why discad,Keep it ,if no objection !
You may discard,if You dont like it
Please get the subtitles done in English wherever Gangu Bai Ji is speaking in Marathi. Without understanding what she is saying we are missing out on very important facts she is taking about. Kindly do this for a larger audience.
Thank you for uploading such a rare documentary. Down the memory lane...
Karnataka s daughter that made us proud through representing hindustani music on a global scale. We can see in the video how Marathi imposition is large. She is a kannadiga by mother tongue. When she cries in the video, She isnt able to express what She actually wants to say. I dint understand the most important parts of the video because there are no Kannada or English subtitles (There's portugese if anyone interested though).
But music transcends language and at the end of the day, She enriched our scared music while She was here.
Nimma Gaayanakke Namma Bhaarata Chiraruni
Karnataka is blessed to have the Sangeetha Saraswathi. Excellent documentary.
Think, Our India is blessed and not just Karnataka...
She was not that small. Hope we Indians understand...
Ample examples are available.
A unique voice which mesmerized listeners across the globe. Attended her concerts many time @ Kundgol festival & other places & my most Cherishable moment was when she came to my marriage ceremony in 1989 @ Dharwad along with Sheshgiriji & Krishnaaji. Their blessings means a lot in our life. Pranaam to a legendary Vocalist yet so simple & down to earth person she was. She is alive through her Devine Music.
Karthik Kamanna her marathi is impeccable
Lucky we are could watch such a super documentary 🙏🏻🙏🏻 very nice thanks for sharing 😊
Please add the subtitles, so that everyone can understand
Rambhau Kundgolkar was marAThI (deshastha brahmin - deshastha meaning from desha that is Maharashtra) thats why she is speaking marathi
How is this relevant?
Her music has the power to bring tears to anyone's eyes. What a prolific singer . Bow down to her great Sadhana.. waah Gangubai
My respects to the great singer of my native place.
