I purchased one, that looked like this on Amazon for $100. It had the (or said it has) the TEF6686 chip inside yet was no better than my Tecsun or Eton elite executive radios at picking up distant stations. I wonder if these are being sold as TEF6686 radios, but instead have Silab chips inside. From what I have been seeing on UA-cam, these amazing 6686 chips are supposed to be picking up distant stations that other radios "cannot hear". Well, the one I bought did not do or hear anything different. I wonder if the 8605 co-processor is needed, to take "full" advantage of what the TEF6686 chip can do. I'm bummed, that my cute little radio can't hear anything different from my others, other than have a pretty screen.
This model has poorer sensitivity with the whip antenna compared to other "TEF6686" receivers, which have better board, RF shielding, and RF preamp implementation. They are all based on the NXP chip, so there's no chance anyone would want to couple the default/common TEF-specific firmware with another (~SiLabs) chip. TEF radios are mostly superior on FM, but I haven't seen any tests where they outperform SiLabs-based receivers on AM/MW and SW convincingly; they just provide slightly more confident and stable (less fading) reception of distant signals, which are also heard on DSP-radios like the D-808/PL330 etc. So, you may have overpaid (the TEF86 now costs half as much on another marketplace - if we are talking about the SAME model, and unless you DON'T want to buy it from CN directly); that's the only bad news. Now for the good news: it's a really nice receiver with good sound and the greatest display in portables ever. When an external antenna is used, the selectivity on FM would be unparalleled. Hearing distant stations on FM depends on the weather/atmosphere. On other days, you might be able to pick up something interesting from over 100 km away (tropo/DX) and check if the same could be heard with your other radios. I'm considering buying one of those TEFs - definitely worth trying.
Something very interesting here. You mention special HW and specific SW. Is the SW still being evolved by someone? Does it support North America (75us etc)? I didn't see any multipath measurements, or some way to help optimize antenna position besides signal strength, will that come in the future? Anyway would be nice to know more and explore ordering one.

Io lo avrei già comprato ma perchè un radio da 100...250 € non monta il registratore mentre un HAN RONG DA da 18€ implementa uno splendido registratore con tre diversi rate (160, 240, 320 kb.)? Se l'XH DATA 808 avesse tasti retroilluminati e registratore sarebbe ancora più fantastico...

Dat is lang geleden nieuwe video, ga je nog verder met de dab+ project dat was wel erg interessant voor mij, deze radio wel gezien ook met de nieuwe v5 op de bekende sites, leuk man ga zo door met je content , Dab zenders bouwen
@@dutchradiopirate Dat is jammer wegens geen tijd, wacht op de dab zelfbouw antenne van je :-) maar wie ik bedoel is de Malahit v5 dsp2 zijn ook gezien met de v9 op de zelfde site, ga me ook even verder en verdiepen op jouw project of dat ik een kant en klare fabrieks koop dab. maar die zijn prijs hoger als je zelf 1 bouwt ook leuker trouwens. We zien je video wel weer verschijnen, trouwens ben je zelf ook een FM Piraat geweest, ik wel begin jaren 80 einde jaren 90.

Io voglio avere un grande portatile con un bel registratore e visti i prezzi di questi radio non dovrebbe essere un problema...
What about AM? Usually the TEF6686's from China are useless on MW and SW because of extremly strong noise (probably produced by the screen, MCU or internaly in the radio). Have these issued been solved on this new TEF86?
@@dutchradiopirate That would be the first TEF6686 without MW or SW then. It says rather clearly on the cover of the radio that it has "FM (65-108 Mhz) & SW/MW/LW (144-27000 Khz) !?

С точки зрения DX на летних дальних прохождениях, по визуальному графику сразу будет понятно, на какой соседней частоте появилась радиостанция, а на привычных прошивках "крутим" вслепую
@@X_azf понятно. Я для dxing'а использую sdr, он мне более удобен за счёт широкой полосы обзора. Кстати, мне вчера пришел синий tef с lna и меня заинтересовал вопрос насчет прошивки. Нужно ли перед тем как загружать прошивку, стирать предыдущую, или можно без этого обойтись, просто загрузив новую?

The most important measurement is missing - MPX Power Loudness (dbr)
Yes i know! I asked the builder if he could add this feature, but he told me that the current cpu is not powerful enough

True, but have you ever seen a TEF with a MPX or RDS level meter on it? This radio has custom firmware, and is internally modified
I've read that the blue TEF6686 is the one to use for shortwave.

Show this on mw and shortwave.. screen noise wipes out most stations. Utter rubbish radio
