@@kenandrieling5885 Yes, real STEM majors are important. The problem is, most students are there to get a degree but not to learn something. The faculty will accept their money and let them choose what classes to take. Nobody is steering the students to success, in part because all paths in life are equally valid. This is a lie, but they profit from the lie.
The correction is coming when fewer folks choose to go to school, as you did.

College is a business and like any business, the goal is to solve a problem for as many people as possible or in other words to serve as many people as possible. When the focus is taken off of serving the customers and is placed on greed, everything starts to fall apart. Colleges have focused on greed for too long by hiking up prices to staggering levels as well as offering degrees for nonexistent careers. Now they're paying for it. Lower your prices to compete with trade schools and offer degrees for careers that actually exist and things can turn around.

lets bring "Industrial Arts Education" back into the public education curriculum starting in junior high. I learned how to cast metal, spot weld and stick weld in one 9th grade class. And in another class I learned wood working. In high school I learned to use a wood lathe, plane wood and spray lacquer in a spray booth. Another class I learned auto mechanics. My nephew worked his butt off most of his child hood on his sport. He ended up top-5 in the country and got a full ride offer to Stanford - as well as many other big ten and sec schools. Not like he was looking to me for advice, but I told him I think you are nuts to not get that stanford diploma. ff 5 years he was offered a 6-figure job at an investment bank with no experience at all. They will groom him and teach him to sell stuff. THAT is why many people choose to overpay for status or name brand when it comes to these schools. I don't care for it but it does work if you also choose a lucrative field and you work for it.

This approach to data is part of the problem with UA-cam. This guy has taken two data points & assumed he knows the answer. The issue is far more complicated & has to do with not only population loss, but also a lack of willingness by politicians & the public (mostly the already ultra-wealthy) to invest in higher education. Democracy can’t function without an educated populace, and an uneducated populace is easier to manipulate. In the 1970’s, taxes paid for 70% of higher ed. today it’s closer to 25%. And politically, look at what party wants to expand higher Ed & relieve the burden of students & which one wants to police their content & cut their funding. Then you can see who wants to cut democracy & who wants it to flourish.

Right, we need college educated people to keep the workforce competitive.
Previous generations could get by manufacturing, but we live in knowledge economy that requires critical thinking and perseverance that is required to finish college.

I'm not sure why the elite schools are seeing so much more in applications. The Ivy League schools may not be the best measure to what's happening with applications and enrollment at the other schools. They are a lot of bucks for not nearly the same bang - dollar for dollar. They are also not a good benchmark since they are not as many of them, and they are not nearly as large in enrollment numbers as any of the flagship state schools. That private schools outside of the Ivy League are seeing a drop is no surprise. All higher institutions are facing an enrollment cliff due to lower birth rates, but the smaller private schools are very expensive and many of them will shut down. That said, even state schools are seeing a drop in applications and I suspect many state systems will condense some of their satellite campuses.
Further, the price of schools increasing so much is in part because of the wide availability of loans. "School too expensive? We'll give you a loan! " There was no incentive on the part of higher ed to cut costs and keep the price low and on the state side of the equation, state funding for their own institutions has decreased so that also puts pressure on state higher ed to raise tuition.
Another problem is the current average high school student often lacks the maturity to really make the most of their college education experience and many would be better off to work for a year or two and learn what it means to show up, and get it done. The heavier expectations are often a shock to their psyche - even before COVID, but amplified by the pandemic. Lots of scholarship dollars, loan money and grant money gets wasted because they have to retake classes they failed.
Trade school is a great option. My brother in law runs a manufacturing company and says machinists are in short supply and can easily get a job making $60k + right out of school. Other trades are similar with regards to shortages and starting pay. I've been a college professor for 28+ years and between the burdens of loans these students graduate with, and the pay scale of many jobs the 4 year degrees prep them for, a tech school is not a bad option at all. They are naturally leaner in their cost structure and have none of the expensive frills such as athletics and Greek life to support.

Because a 4 year degree is incredibly overvalued.

Meh...this is tired horse people have been beating on for 30 years. Yet costs have continued to rise, because, for the all the crowing, an easy way for an employer to screen out a lot of f**k ups is to require a 4 year degree. It's good old American outsourcing.
The difference now is that prices are so high, plus a relatively smaller cohort, all made worse by the pandemic is forcing smaller privates schools who can't cover their growing costs. I don't really think this is something to happy about though. A lot of these schools I'm sure offered a great education, provided the students wanted to get it. And on that point, I'm skeptical that most of those complaining about not learning anything of value in college, really cared or paid attention.
There's definitely blame to go around as to why the prices have been rising multiple times inflation: states governments lowering funding, big capital projects to make campuses more luxurious to attract wealthy students, administrative bloat, etc., these mostly apply to the large state schools. Smaller colleges, be it liberal arts or a polytechnic, mostly have just gotten screwed.
True, trade schools do offer an alternative. While they are different in what they offer, they're not necessarily better and can be much worse than the local catholic university. See ITT as an example.
So, to sum up, I don't think this is the sign of a coming 'blue collar' jobs renaissance.

Yeah, a good way to screen out losers is to require a degree. Then, require a graduate degree. Then, require 5 years of experience. Then, require 8 years of experience. Then, require 8 rounds of interviews.

This is a very good thing that these colleges are closing maybe then things will get better employers don’t see any difference between a college education person and somebody is not years ago is a different story, but they lowered the standards because of correctness and equity outcome. total disaster countries are not that stupid but America is.

He compared Nike to a paless shoe. Payless isn't around. Not a quality shoe. Not a comparison to an overpriced college. The problem with a higher education is, too expensive. It's better now to get into a field and continue education as part of advancement.
