Today’s guest, Jamie Bernstein, is an author, narrator, director, broadcaster and filmmaker who also happens to be the daughter of one of the greatest legendary composers and conductors the world has ever known, Leonard Bernstein.
He’s been immortalized by the genius of his many iconic compositions. His Broadway shows: “On the Town”, “Wonderful Town”, “Candide” and “West Side Story”; the film score to the movie, “On the Waterfront”; and his magnificent, timeless operas, symphonies, ballets and theatre pieces including “Trouble in Tahiti” and the sequel, “A Quiet Place”, “Prelude, Fugue and Riffs”, Symphony Number 1: Jeremiah; “Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers”, Symphony Number 3: Kaddish, Dybbuk, Songfest, Divertimento, and Arias and Barcarolles. And his renowned, groundbreaking Young People’s Concerts turned all of us into music lovers.
Our guest writes and narrates educational concerts all around the world, not only about her father in “The Bernstein Beat”, but also about Mozart, Aaron Copland, Stravinsky, and other great composers. She’s produced and hosted the New York Philharmonic’s live national radio broadcasts, as well as many summer broadcasts from Tanglewood, and educational concerts for the New World Symphony in Miami.
She also narrated the highly acclaimed podcast “The NY Phil Story: Made in New York.” And she co-directed the multi-award winning documentary film entitled, “Crescendo: the Power of Music”, which celebrates the amazing social transformation that happens when children from disadvantaged urban communities, participate in youth orchestra programs.
Our guest has dedicated her career to perpetuating and honoring her father’s legacy. In addition to presenting the “Bernstein Beat” concerts, she created and edits a newsletter called “Prelude, Fugue & Riffs,” to keep the international community of Leonard Bernstein fans connected.
In 2018 our guest released her highly compelling, fascinating and poignant book entitled, “Famous Father Girl: A Memoir of Growing Up Bernstein”.
And she and her 2 siblings Alexander and Nina, provided much input into the making of the brand new film about their father called, “Maestro”, starring Bradley Cooper, which is now showing on Netflix.

After seeing the Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro" on Netflix, I just had to invite Bernstein's daughter Jamie on our show to discuss her book ("Famous Father Girl"), her father's brilliant music career, and of course, her thoughts about the movie. In this candid in-depth interview she provides many fascinating insights which really enhanced my appreciation of the movie. I'm not at all surprised that this episode of our show has gone viral. It is so impressive, the amount of homework Mr. Brownstone does prior to each interview. I think it's one reason why he gets so much from his subjects (guests). They know he's deeply interested in them and their work, and has taken the time to prepare. It's uncommon in todays world of journalistic sloth.

@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 You do? At the end you asked, what Jamie Bernstein would like a viewer to think about her father as a person. It was a very good question and Jamie gave a very good answer.
I agree it was a good question. But I disagree with her answer. In my opinion, the more we grew to like Felicia, the more we disliked Leonard.

She says that she would like people to like LB as a complicated and loving human being (this is not an accurate quote). I am not a film critic and certainly not any LB expert, but I say this: After reading the book by Jamie Bernstein I was surprised that the film lacked a personal view on LF:n life and personality. It was just a very general look without any central figure to relate to. Jamie Bernstein talks a lot about her family. A warm and happy family. I couldn't sense that in the film. The courtship of Leonard and Felicia went on and on and suddenly they had two children. I don't remember, if Nina and Alexander were just distant figures, who hardly had had any lines. Okay, LB was fooling around... There was a powerful scene with Leonard and Felicia, when Felicia finally confronted her husband. But in the whole everything just happened in the film without any particular significance. It didn't effect me emotionally, and all the time I was trying to memorize, how Jamie told about those events in her book. I certainly felt sorry for Felicia. Life with a person like LB must have been hard and challenging. It's amazing that she didn't just walk out of the marriage. It must be a trying task to live with those larger than life people - we are aware about all Mommie Dearest books. LB's children treasure the legacy of their father and rightly so. I haven't sensed any bitterness from their interviews. I don't regret watching the Maestro, but I had waited for more. LB's music was present, which is good. But there was no emotional impact. Not for me. That assistant/lover of LB, who's name is escaping me: LB described him to his family members as a brilliant young man. In what way? One can only guess as his supposed brilliance was not shown in any way.

Very interesteing, though I wish it had been longer. He was such a worldfamous conductor, and would have liked his views of the wonderful orchestras and singers he worked with all over the world. And what he thought of the many critics who put him down as a conductor.

I agree. For some reason the main focus was Bernstein’s sex life and the very sad impact it had on his marriage
Sadly, I loved him more before this movie. I don’t think the movie did a good job of conveying his love of the music.

That thought did enter my mind when I watched the movie. But as you can see from this interview, his family feels differently.
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Your interview was incredible.. touched all bases --musical and political. I did post a blog review of Maestro with its "ups and downs," and do feel so much was left out in the movie, that we who are in are 70s, (and being musicians) had longed for. The gay aspect, was known to many of us New Yorkers who followed the Phil. It was not paramount to our adoration of Lenny. What was central was his all encompassing expression in so many forms--his genius, his energy, his immense gift as a communicator. He inspired so many-- and nurtured so many---Marin Alsop, for example.. Andre Watts, to name just a few. When Lenny died, so did a piece of us.
