I think the perfect way to describe 31-EDO is “Triune”
    Tri + une = 30 + 1
And triune also means 3-in-1, offering a godlike quality of interplay and harmony

Man...this is what gets me excited about xenharmonics. Not bro noodling around on their 22edo guitar. Improvisation is near and dear to my heart but I wanna hear compositions! Like, give me a taste of the harmonic possibilities of a particular tuning. What does the voice leading sound like? What kinds of new and interesting harmonic movements and regions can you get into?
    Lovely little piece!

Thanks so much! That's such a wonderful compliment. I also agree. It seems many people use microtonality to be "weird" or "outside", almost like a gimmick. I'm not interested in this as a gimmick, I'm interested in deeper exploring, expressing, and understanding sound. I've always been obsessed with harmony all my life and the last couple years I've felt sooo restricted by 12edo, especially in vocal contexts. 31edo has offered me a richer pallet of colors.

If 31 catches on, we’ll have magnitudes more of melodic potential than we’ve ever known.

    • @ZheannaErose
      @ZheannaErose  5 років тому +35

Agreed!! It's absolutely overwhelming when you consider the melodic dimension of 31edo. I also find 31-edo way easier to sing to. WAY easier. When I sing in 12edo, I constantly feel like I'm second guessing my tuning. Every single time I sing a third it feels SO sharp. It used to bother me tremendously when I was a younger musician and didn't understand it. I knew the major third needed to be lower but then I'd check the piano and the sharp one was in tune, lol! Literally I had years of musical struggle hearing things in my head that "didn't exist"--only to learn they do exist, I just had to increase my resolution.

Here's my hot take, 31 edo won't catch on before we start playing with loads of tuning systems as a whole alongside AI. Just a guess! But this is far and away the coolest microtonal/polytonal/correct-terminology music I've heard! I am very grateful that you're doing this Zhea and please keep going!

Omg. The use of microtones and every single aspect of the harmony is melting me. I wanna be a spectral composer, and this is what I wanna achive. Congratz, and please, keep making music.

One of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. There is so much potential with 31EDO and all other microtonal scales! If more and more musicians start to tap into it, we hopefully will have a new musical revolution!

This evoked a feeling I never knew I could experience. You showed me a quick preview of what a future of music looks like! As you’ve mentioned future instruments, now I cannot wait for the day when we can play around with microtonal instruments to the point that we don’t need to call them microtonal. As a composition student I sometimes vaguely worry about the future of music but you really showed me hope and warm energy that your music enfolds.

I am always awestricken by your wondrous, dreamy music. Your ability to create these lovely composition really puts the -harmonic in xenharmonic. You have inspired me do dive into the microtonal pond myself. I have no idea where to go with it but it calls me with a force I did not expect, nor have really felt elsewhere. Since i heard Eurybia a while back I have been enthralled. What realm did you descend from exactly, you celestial star beam? I hope to, one day, wield even the dimmest form of that ethereal brilliance you radiate. I wish you all the best, always.

Very interesting showcase of what 31-tone is capable of! I love it when music triggers visualizations and this gives me the feel of finding a lost world haha. We talked on fb some time ago but I don't think my latest messages got through.. would love to discuss some more 31 with you!

I totally feel you! Some ratios present in 31edo are just sooo magical and recall the fractal nature of reality. Sure, feel free to message me! I receive a lot of correspondence pertaining to my business so it's easy for more casual exchanges to get lost.

It's one of the best microtonal pieces I've heard - expanding the horizons of music and showing how much gets lost between each two half-tones of 12EDO, and keeping the musical narrative not dissolved into land of dissonances, like in many microtonal works. Also, I'm not keen on electronic music like Sevish. This one resembles film music - it's great mix of acoustic and electronic sound. Beautiful harmony, I'd love to hear more similar pieces from you and other composers.

Wow! This is very beautiful! Love the various texture changes both in terms of the 31-tone harmony - but also timbrally/instrumentationally. It really brings out the flavor in the different sounds of 31-edo. And it would sure be cool to hear this thing is an album context.

I use all various sample libraries and retune them in kontakt with .nki scripts. I also use Serum, Pigment, and Alchemy for microtonal synthesis. I also use Spectrasonics Keyscape and import my own tunings for the sampling engine.
It seems just about any sample library or synth can be microtonal if you find the right path.
