This Is One Project I WOULDN'T recommend DIY'ing... (FAIL?!)

  • This week, I decided to take on a project that has been putting off for years. Every time I drive my Jetta at night, I'm blinded by any truck (or any car) with bright headlights. So it's time to finally clean up my car so I can install tint on my windows. Will this be a project better left to the professionals? Or can a DIY'er like myself successfully get this done?
    Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy this video! Don't forget to like and subscribe!

    Happy Saturday everyone. For those of you new to the channel, welcome! This girl takes on challenges most of us wouldn't touch. Show of hands, how many of us have tried tinting windows only to throw in the towel? Huge hat tip Meg, this one was difficult and you worked your way through it, and kept us entertained through out. Thanks for sharing

      Yeah... I'm one of those towel throwers :D I tried this for my Mazda 323 back in the day and it didn't work out even half as well as how Meg managed to do it. Definitely not an easy job.

      I agree with you. I'm a cheapskate so I have done it so many times now I'm really getting good at it. In the beginning I failed some many times that I probably would have saved some money if I let a pro do it, but it fun learning and mastering. And every hobby cost money some how.

    Adding tint to a rear window seems like a great and affordable way to help combat the growing issue of overpowered headlights. Thanks for sharing that!

    I’ve only seen 4 of your videos so far (this, laptop batteries, door mirrors, truck brakes) and the absolute best part is the fact that you’re learning as you go and not afraid to try. You do your research, you plan the job, and you do it safely and cheerfully.
    This is very encouraging to others who would like to try these jobs too. Keep going 👍

    I little hint for trimming the tint for when you do the F-150. When trimming the tint, leave the top about an inch (2-3 cm) long. When you transfer it to the inside, set the bottom first and then roll the window down some. Now the bottom of the tint is secured by the window sweep and you can use the top of the window as an edge to run the razor blade against for a clean cut. I have done this on my minivan and an SUV, I am dreading doing it to my Silverado. It is definitely not as ease as it looks on UA-cam. Keep up the good work!

    • @Meg.August
      @Meg.August  7 місяців тому +3

      That actually sounds like a great tip, and I didn't see that anywhere on UA-cam. Thankfully the F150 has factory tint so I don't have to worry about that one, phewf! Thanks for the informative comment!

    I tinted my first few cars because I was a broke college student. I had so many fails. It's a tedious and frustrating process, so I admire you sticking with it. My current car though I paid a pro to do because I realized the time, sweat, frustration, and money wasn't worth doing myself. 😁

    Tip soapy water helps a ton moving tin around..
    And from your last video I watched, if you need a second person to hold the brakes. Just simply use your breaker bar against the brake pedal and the seat. Move the seat forward to press brakes.
    Oh and a screw driver will pop broken nuts out of your 14mms.

    You're on the right track for the rear window - When you are forming it, use a heat gun (more powerful than a hair dryer) on low and wear an oven mitt. As you heat it, run your hand and work the film to the edges to smooth it all out. It also helps to have a large clean glass surface as a staging area. We used to have a large white board we could soak down, then peel off\stick the wet tint to before we installed it. Doing this job there is no such thing as too much spray from the soapy water mix! Good luck!

    • @Meg.August
      @Meg.August  6 місяців тому +1

    I tried adding 'headlight' tint to a new fog light - off the vehicle - and gave in after two goes. Absolutely admire your perseverance and taking on that job. I have windows tinted before and some bubbles appear and disappear after a few days so the rear might get better.
    For the interior/detailing would highly recommend looking at getting bottles of produced opposed to the wipes. Although detailing is a rabbit hole you may want to stay away from lol

    Just a tip that I learned from the glass installers. When you have a new windshield installed, they put a couple of pieces of tape on the top to hold the window in place. They also tell you to keep a window cracked when you close your door to prevent the pop of pressure from moving your window. The same would work when installing tint, Give the extra air in the car a separate exit other than where you're working. It's nice to see people tackling projects themselves. It will be the wave of the future, since schools no longer have shop classes and they are not pushing the trades in the same way they push college and universities.

    • @Meg.August
      @Meg.August  6 місяців тому

      Great tip! I didn't realize until I was editing this video that the tint fell off due to the air pressure pop from the car door closing, but totally makes sense. That's a good idea to have the front windows cracked while installing to prevent this. Thanks for watching!

    what i was taught when tinting windows with film was to use a couple of coins glued together with a blade glued to the outside then run the coins around the rubber of the window and it will cut a perfect cut around the entire window 90% of tinted window failures is because the action of opening and closing the window makes the film catch. but as expected from you, you did a really good job it is very hard to get it without bubbles.

    32:43 not funny at all for you but hilarious to me. 35:35 Oh, Meg, you're just like watching a cartoon, ya know when Wile E Coyote hatches a plan, and I love it. I can't help it, cut your shape, lay it flat to peal the entire clear plastic off, spray the side of the tint you just pulled the clear off and the window and then place the tint. The soap give you a floating surface to position the tint, and then squeegee the liquid and bubbles out. In the end, I guess, the most important thing is that you preserver, gain knowledge, and complete you task knowing you'll do better next time. Great Job :)

    Most important tip is to USE A LOT OF SOAPY WATER! Excessive amounts is always best. The more the better.
    When handling, when sticking, when un sticking.
    If the film needs to be moved touches or adjusted, the 1st thing is to spray it over and over.

    Cheers @Meg August Careful with constantly resetting breakers, they are safety indicators, not light switches. I suspect you were using an extension cord that was too long or too small in gauge size. Seemed like you figured out the issue later in the video. Congrats on making an attempt with the tint. While trying is always worthwhile, I think many of us have learned that the material cost and time is better spent on hiring a professional that is using professional film and you get a warranty as well.

    • @Meg.August
      @Meg.August  6 місяців тому

      Ya, that extension cord I was using initially is a splitter and has it's own breaker but it's pretty worn out so kept popping. The garage breakers, yes, I was using two heaters as well as the hair dryer and I guess that was just too much draw so decided to unplug the heaters in the end! Definitely worth hiring the pros for tinting for sure!

    Another great video! Try fabric aerosol glue for the headliner. Also I don't know if tinting is like wrapping a vehicle but using lots of water between the film and glass and not being afraid to pull it away spray more and reapply.

    • @Meg.August
      @Meg.August  6 місяців тому

      Thanks so much! Fabric aerosol glue is a good idea. I have never wrapped a vehicle but I could also imagine the same thing, lots of soapy water and I think more heat too (I think my heatgun would have been better than the hair dryer but I feared melting it!) Thanks for watching!

    Tinting the door glass is so much easier if you just take the windows out, tint them on the bench where you can trim the film to size of the glass, then refit them.

    If I was going to go this tint job , I would remove all of the side windows even if they are electric ( I have did that many times over the years when I had to replace the motor and it’s not as hard as you would think ) then you could put the window on a flat surface like a workbench and put the tint film on the window, Im sure it would be a lot easier to get out any bubbles if you get any and you could just put the tint on at one time leaving a little over the edge of the window and just trim off the extra, and put the window back in the door, this way the tint film will
    All ready be way inside the door inches below the weather seal and not get caught or peal off when you raise and lower the window. I know that would not help installing the tint film on the front or back windows. But it’s something

    • @Meg.August
      @Meg.August  4 місяці тому +1

      This is very true and I definitely think I would have gotten a better result had I removed the side windows. I figured I'd try it the tint-installer way (with the windows left it place) but sure enough, I realized you need years of experience to perfect that skill doing it that way!

    Tinting is very tricky. One tip that can help you: Once you size and trim paper to size, dettach the backing completely (outside the car) and spray a very generous amount of soapy water in the sticky side (completely), This is the key to position the paper inside, wiggle it into place and help you with the next steps. This helps you prevent the paper from creating creases, sticking everywhere, ripping or catching dust.

    Are manual transmissions more common in Canada?
    A home breaker popping will get worse as they trip more. At some point you'll need to get an electrician in to swap the breaker. That's not hard to solo honestly, but it is absolutely not only very dangerous, but also potentially deadly.
    Knowing how to pop off that valence on the back window probably helped a ton when doing the headliner.

    Idea for your next project would be putting a headliner in your car. It's not that hard of a job and is very rewarding. Also I think the tint issues with your tint was more in the quality of the tint and less of the installation.
