I hope you all enjoy! I had an awesome and frustrated time building this kit.

Might I suggest that to enhance the functionality of your radio box that you include a roll-up J-pole antenna and a coil of RG-58 coax, so you can get a decent antenna up higher in the air?

Honestly I was thinking he was going to have that in there before he opened the box.

    • @CAphotos

Especially since having the antenna on the box puts the operator at risk of RF exposure in excess of the limits set by the FCC.

    • @richardowens9061
      @richardowens9061 2 роки тому +1

@@CAphotos RF exposure limits set by the FCC are based on:
1 - Proximity to the radiator
      2 - Frequency of operation
      3 - Transmission power
      4 - Duration of exposure
Using an online RF Exposure calculator, using an antenna with gain of 3dBi, at a transmitter power level of 5 watts, at 146 MHz, and a duty cycle of 20% transmit and 80% receive, the minimum safe distance (no limit of time exposure) from the antenna is a little over 7 inches from the antenna.
So, it is possible to have an antenna mounted on the box without risk of exceeding FCC RF exposure limits.
But, the reason I recommended a roll up J-Pole antenna and some coax was to improve the performance and efficiency of the system.

They are not also much lighter and give more power for there size. You will over time need to replace your lead acid battery but unless you do something realy bad you will never need to replace the Lifepo4 battery!

Even today, LiFePO batteries are 4-5 times more expensive than lead acid equivalents. Also, they require special care and feeding to get full performance out of them. I used a 30AH LiFePO battery with a small specific LiFePO "trickle" charger, but that setup (2 items) was over $220. Substantially more expensive than the transceiver itself.

@@g-whiz286 Then, you're shopping in the wrong places. LiFePO4 batteries have plunged in price and if you paid $220 for a 30 amp-hour LiFePO4 battery and a trickle charger, you got ripped off. Try sources like AliExpress where you can get 100AH of LiFePO4 prismatic cells for $169 or 300AH for $400 - at 12.8 VDC.
Then, add a BMS for about $100-$150, depending on the current capacity, and you have a battery that will last you 3000-4000 cycles over a ten to twenty year period.
Then, do the cost analysis to see how much it would cost you to get similar capacity and a similar number of charge cycles over a similar amount of time with lead-acid batteries and see which one works out to be cheaper.

Can you provide a link so others can benefit from your search skills? 100AH and most certainly a 300AH battery would be too large and heavy for a portable go box. The charger was from Amazon because I wanted to be able to return it if it didn't perform as expected. Happily, it did. It charged the battery to 14.6 volts and then turned off even if left connected. About every hour, it would sample the voltage to "see" if it needed to come back on.

The plastic ammo can looks weak and not waterproof.... I like K6KIE build!! Nice job! Can you list the momentary switch on the parts list :)

I like your build and am looking to do something very similar, compact and complete. Do you have a materials / parts list you can share? Specifically, the hard plastic looking platform that everything is mounted to.. Thanks in advance for your help.

I just used screws. The case had like screw holes around the inside. Screwed the board down to the case. Used 3m double tape to hold the batteries down to the bottom of the case to keep them from moving

it is not advisable to transmit 25 watts of RF into your face...
    where is your fusing?
also i wouldnt have used the panel the usb, outlet, etc are already screwed onto as they dont need that panel. you can use it as a template, then surface mount it to the polyethylene sheet. saves a lil room for extra storage...
if there was room to mount the radio in the box i would have done that then added either an external speaker, or surface mounted a remote jack...
over all simple, and it looks good for what it is.

Yeah it's not, I transmit at the lowest possible wattage like every ham should know.. I use 5watts and it's usually on the roof of my car so it's above my head. I have no worries or concerns.
But thank you it was a good project

could you invest in a chinese tripod for like 3 dollars, your video is all over the place holding the camera with one hand is so amateurish. Nice box though
