  • I did this session to help prepare me for an upcoming 1500m race. This was run in hot conditions but I think I handled them well. Let me know in the comments what you think I can run a 1500m in. If you like the video, please press the subscribe button and give the video a like!

What I’ve seen people do with 1.500 training is that they only doing 1500m worth of work at that pace
pros like wightman, kerr, ingebrigtsen, cheruiyot train like 4k worth of 1500 pace in one key session
    Whether it being 400 reps, 400/200, 600s, 300s, 800s, or pace changes

Yes, I know what you mean. I think it’s important in a session like that, that I get plenty of work at race pace, and this is a good example as the volume was 3200m, and the recoveries were short enough to make it hurt but also long enough to allow me to hit the race times. However, this can only really be done when the reps aren’t too long in my opinion.
But I also think that, as you allude to, longer reps at 1500 race pace, such as 600 and above, are important so that race pace isn’t too much of a shock to the system on race day. Recently, I did 1k at 1500 race pace; 5 minute break; 600 at 1500 race pace; a 3 minute break; and then 400m at race pace. Although the title distance was only 2k here, the 1k rep at race pace caused so much fatigue that not much more work at race pace can be done, so the purpose of the session was a bit different than in this video

Just wondering if you have a coach?

Hi there! No, not at this moment in time anyway. I’ve been coaching myself since I started running almost two years ago

@@PatrickTheRunner have you ever considered it? Breaking 1.50 is not easy. (For the record I haven't (1.53) but I am an older athlete (started at 35!) and ran that a few times between 37-40 years of age. Anyway I think you're doing great and I get a lot of your inspiration from you video's. I do also try some of your workouts (on Strava) these/those are brutal to say the least. The fact that you're running these training times on your own, is quite incredible. I can't help but think you would benefit even more from a coach and/or middle distance training group. They might be able to improve your running style/form, which (from what I have seen) can be improved upon, given time. I don't know how old you're but I believe you still have the time in which to improve this area and perhaps (ultimately) surpass even your own expectations.

@@andrewlarasen9615Thank you very much for the nice words. I am 27 years old, so feel that I can have at least 8 years where I can keep getting better, since I only started running less than 2 years ago.
I wouldn’t rule out having a coach in the future, but I suppose that so far I have enjoyed planning my own training and it has worked well, so for that reason I haven’t felt the need to get a coach yet. However, I think my running form can definitely be improved, and I think in the very near future what I will most likely do is at least get a sprinting coach to help me improve my running form. I agree that it can help to train with others, so that would be another benefit with a training group.
I think I’m also someone who probably would find it difficult to trust someone enough to coach me. I’m more or less of the opinion that no one will be as invested in me as me, so often think that I would need to really have a lot of faith in a coach and know that they would do their most for me. I think I put so much time into planning my own training that a part of me thinks that I wouldn’t forgive myself if I let time slip away by letting someone else take control of my training, but I get where you are coming from and it’s possible that a coach could improve me at a faster rate.
I genuinely do think that sub 1:50 will just be the start for me, and that I can keep getting quicker! Thank you for sharing your thought, it’s always interesting to hear other people’s opinions and I alway take them on board

thats a great session for tuning , but for a 15 simulation session recoveries should be equal to the rep pace + the 4 min bet sets.
BTW, can you advise what your typical warm up would be for a race as i think this is crucial as w/ups can be so important.
      my guestimate is 3:49.4

    • @PatrickTheRunner

@@kevinpye3140Thank you! Yes, I agree that there could be more endurance based sessions with shorter recoveries, but due to the speed of the reps and with the recoveries still being short, I think I got the stimulus I was looking for.
My usual warm up is a 15 minute easy run; followed by dynamic stretches, drills and strides. It’s something I experiment with from time to time, but it’s mainly that format.
Thank you and I like the sound of that prediction!

Haha yes I am aware that Mark’s group do a session consisting of these reps, although I’m not sure what the recovery is. I was actually coached by Mark for a while when I was younger and learned a lot! He seems to have a great stable of athletes now
