Hey TeaBear I enjoyed your video, however for the sake of
accuracy which I am sure you will appreciate, there is chronological error on your timeline for this video. Surprisingly it is at the very beginning and it is quite alright to be honest as you did a good job articulating the rest of the inversions. K enough with my digression: here is a nice paradox that really dovetail the whole movie thematically the Opera
Scene in Kiev, Kat’s Sator hit-job proceeded by her elegant 40 ft Olympic class victory dive in Vietnam, and the denouement at the hyper center @Stas-12 all occurred on the same day; hence the palindrome TENET which resonates the beginning is the end and vice versa. This sentiment is echoed by Neal, i.e. younger maxmiLIEN, @ the end right b4 he goes to invert one last time to close the loop when he reveals to the Protagonist: “ this is the end of a beautiful friendship for me.... But for you it is just beginning.” Apologies if came across too
critical,‘that wasn’t my intention. I liked the view and your voice plus the delivery and just figured you wouldn’t want a discrepancy on a video you did.

I've been going through a weird complex thought that it there was to be a second movie it would be a prequel to the first with the plot being the recruiting of Neil and The Protagonist telling him his mission to go back years so he could prevent what has happened in the first movie. So basically Tenet is the sequel to Tenet 2, which is the prequel to Tenet😰🤯🤯😵whew thats complex but only if there will be a sequel which I doubt

Sator didn't picked up the piece of algorithm himself after the car crashed. There was no piece in the car when inverted Sator found the car with protsgonist inside and burned it. He simply knew by seeing protagonist in the car that the piece is back in the future so he delivered this information to his normal flow team which goes then in paralel with normal flow protagonist and Neil to pick up the piece after the reversed protagonist walks in reverse back ito the turnstile. It's Sator's temppral pincer movement. Other than that great chronology!

Well actually the reason the movie's named TENET is because of the "Sator Square" which is a latin sentence and a palindrome just like the word itself that has been around for hundreds of years.
On the left the square and on the right the reference in the movie:
      S A T O R | Name of the Antagonist
      A R E P O | Name of the Spanish Artist
      T E N E T | Well, you guessed it
      O P E R A | Movie starts at the Opera
      R O T A S | Construction company /
      Freeport
As you can see, the sentence read backwards is exactly the same as read forwards and the word TENET can be read left to right, right to left, top to bottom and bottom to top.

@@yasin5040 Yes, but we can't reasonably assume that the Sator Square exists in-universe because it would be far too meta. We then have to either come to the conclusion that the Protagonist named the operation/organization Tenet because of the actual definition of the word, or the pincer strategy to obtain the algorithm.

  • @j.r.1210

Thanks for the helpful and straightforward video. One clarification: "time inversion" absolutely IS a form of time travel. Indeed, it's time travel reduced to its essence: eliminating the anisotropy of time, i.e., making the "arrow" go both ways. Time travel to the past does not necessarily require the creation of multiple realities/timelines. In fact, the most philosophically rigorous conceptions of time travel to the past do not permit changes to be made; rather, time travelers simply participate in past events without altering the ways those events are known to have happened. See *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban* for a surprisingly good illustration of this principle. This is the version of time travel to the past that *Tenet* postulates.

Great video. One correction. Sator doesn't pick up the 241 at the SAAB crash site. By that point it's back in the BMW, in it's case. He just tells the forward moving half of his pincer team that it will be in the SAAB for them.
Off screen, all the forward moving half of his team would need to do is wait for the SAAB to uncrash, reverse it's way back to where inverted Protagonist got in. And wait for the inverted Protagonist to reverse walk out if the SAAB and into to the turnstile. And just pick it up at that point.

You switched the teams when explaining the temporal pincer. Blue goes backwards, red goes forwards. Blue reports what will happen to red, because they are coming from the future into the past. Red goes into the mission with that knowledge. Those colors are used consistently throughout the movie to indicate time-flow direction. The rooms in the turnstile have red/blue lighting, plaques in their doors, and even characters will use red/blue tones in their costumes to help the viewer understand what is going on

He tells him that because only Ives and The Protagonist will be in charge of retrieving the algorithm. Members of both red and blue team do not know the purpose of the mission. They haven't been told about the algorithm because they don't know who to trust. Blue and Red team need to be different people otherwise they will affect each other when travelling in opposite times.

I think the hypothermia scene confuses me, unless he was still inverted and so was Neil, so the real timeline in chronological order would be:
1: Inverted Neil rescues Inverted Pro from the burning car, both are heading back to the heist scene.
2: At the start of the car chase, Inverted Pro has hypothermia from the fire, which then starts and Inverted Sator un-triggers it, then Inverted Pro un-crashes the car and that's seen in the end of take 1 of the car chase.
    3: Interrogation scene.
Also you got the colours inverted in the temporal pincer movement scene. To me it looked like:
1: They all start inverted and walk into the turnstile to go to the normal timeline. The blues have just come from a fight, and they tell the red soldiers what happened, then they don't fight, but their inverted selves are un-loaded onto the blue crates.
2 - The blue and red crates are put on the battlefield. The teams both have a counter going from 10:00 to 0:00, but from blue perspective 10:00 is the end while from red 10:00 is the start of the countdown.
3: At 5:00 the invertedly destroyed building is un-destroyed but destroyed again... so it was always destroyed... confusing. Also the red soldier who gets caught in an inverted explosion is trapped in a wall, also confusing.
4: Some stuff with Neil happens.
5: The forward soldiers (both red and blue) continue their normal lives, probably working for Sator and avoiding their previous selves.

The fact that I’ve had to binge like 15 different timeline and explainer videos just to figure out what I watched, to me, really gets at what I think is a huge problem with Nolan now. There’s a difference between ‘treating the audience with respect’ and ‘treating the audience as though they’re all nuclear physicists.’ Tiny clues seen for ~1 second two hours before are meant to be instantly remembered when they pay off, important exposition is buried under heavy layers of score, and needing a spread sheet to keep track of scene events is just a chore

The important thing to learn about the movie is that at the start when the Russian catch the Protagonist, The train is moving backwards meaning the time is inverted and in the next scene the train starts moving forward, which means that that is where the character actually dies in the past

3:20 Sator didn't got the algorithm from flipped saab.
Forward timeline: The inverted saab car comes back to life then protagonist throws algorithm into inverted saab.
Inverted timeline: From warehouse/turnstile inverted protagonist drives inverted saab to the car chase scene we see algorithm flies back to the BMW or neil's car then sator rams the poor saab causing it to flip upside down.
So the algorithm was actually just there in the inverted saab sitting next to inverted protagonist all along.
So people might get confused like "why didn't protagonist just looked inside the car or if he actually saw it why didnt he just took it walked away."
It's because time inversion differs from time travel you can't just go back in time and steal something and then go back to the present like nothing happened. In time inversion you have to ensure the future you have to do something for it so your desired future will occur just like the ending where were thinking why didn't neil just go with protagonist and have some coffee. Sad ending btw
I'm assuming Sator told his men where it is because he now knows the protagonist was lying since he was going back to the past to ensure the algorithm in the future.
TL;DR: Algorithm piece is just there inside the saab car from the warehouse/the turnstile and that's where Sators men took it.

    • @TeaBreakFilmReviews
      @TeaBreakFilmReviews  4 роки тому +12

Sator's timeline is difficult precisely because not a lot of it is shown. To analyse his timeline closely I think I would need to have the film on DVD to make sure I hear everything and put the scenes I see him in on a timeline.
What we do know is that as a young adult, he volunteered for a mission to retrieve plutonium, which turned out to be a piece of the algorithm. We know he needs to collect all the pieces and gets given gold and instructions on how to do so. We know he is terminally ill. We know the fit bit is linked to the bomb and algorithm that ends the world. We know he has been using inversion to bamboozle our heroes.
We do not know how the turnstile machines he uses got there, if he got instructions on how to make them. We do not know his connection with Priya, they may be associates. We do not know where he is exactly during some scenes.
We do not know who he is hired by and the fact that he says the "twilight world" phrase might link him to actually being hired by The Protagonist. This is just a theory though.

Thanks for this easy-to-follow video; it really helped me understand the movie better. :) My favorite scene was during the car chase, when Sator's vehicle comes raging up the highway backwards, toward the Protagonist and Neil. It looked so real yet unnatural, and left me shaking from how unnerved it made me feel.
Another moment was during the Stalsk-12 battle, when some Blue Team members were running through a hole in the wall of a building, when suddenly the inverted explosion occurs, restoring the wall and trapping at the last Blue member inside. That was a pretty cool example of the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that Nolan has become famous for.

My question is this: why not use just one team (color not important) to start the attack at stalsk-12, experience first hand what happens-> then invert themselves and go back in the past just before the attack, change gears in the turnstile so that they can run the attack again in forward time (and not inverted)? Sator’s goal was not to activate the algorithm. his goal was to use his death to trigger the explosion that hid the capsule. they had timers counting down because they knew the time it goes off as it was reported on in the news. The algorithm was meant to be hidden in a time capsule for the future people to unearth and then activate.

    • @SkillfulSinner
      @SkillfulSinner 2 роки тому

if his death triggered the algorithm than anything after that would cease to exist, i.e. why the beginning of the first half of the movie exists. He believed at his death that we would seal the fate of the world for the future to find the algorithm. that’s why after the kiev explosion/his death time continued as it was his past self with kat and the protagonist from his death forward.

This is the best video currently available which explains movie plot and concepts with full clarity that too in calm and composed manner. All the other channels with millions of subscribers are making it complicated by talking hastily and throwing random concepts here and there and further complicating things.
I strongly recommend this video for people who are looking for good movie explanation.

    I have a confusion here...
At first meeting, Protagonist had a dinner with kat in which she revealed that she saw a woman jumping off from the yatch and Sator went missing after that. But later in the movie she invited him on yatch and Sator was their already their.

I have the answer to you question. In the Tallinn Turnstile, inverted Sator shoot Kat with inverted bullet and as we know that an inverted bullet is very much fatal to a person moving in forward direction of time flow ( already told in the movie ) , so to save Kat , Neil and the Protagonist inverted themselves along with Kat and they started moving backwards in time ( because a normal bullet is less fatal than an inverted bullet to a forward moving person , so when they are moving backwards the injury wasn't that much a big deal to Kat ... It's just like a normal bullet injury ). What I'm trying to say is that inverted bullet will act just as a normal bullet in case of inverted Kat and with nice hospitality from Neil, Kat heals up gradually.
Now as they were moving backwards through time, so in order to get back to normal timeflow ( forward direction ) they have to get re-inverted in a turnstile. So they decided to move to Oslo ( because in Oslo there was a turnstile in the Freeport vault ) and get themselves re-inverted i.e. moving in forward direction again.
P.S.- They took the advantage of the chaos during the plane crash and made it in there where they had a fight with the Protagonist's past self only from a different perspective.

Here's something to chew on... Neil is actually Max all grown up and is recruited by the Protagonist in the future and inverted after being told what needs to happen, and the Algorithm is actually intended by Tenet for Sator to find in order to make sure that all the events play out as they're supposed to, eliminating Sator, saving the world, and Kat, with the single sad truth that Max/Neil will eventually need to sacrifice himself in order to save the world/Protagonist.

Hold on, if the protagonist saw himself come out the inverter and fought him, then carried on to the point where he has to go back to that inverter and fight his earlier self, then that means his earlier self is continuing forward to loop back to the point where kat gets shot and has to go back to that same inverter again, so wouldn't it be a never ending loop?

The plot aside, I'm still unable to grasp the concept of entropy. Reverse entropy is used in the film where we see the effect before the cause. So, for instance, in the opera house siege, when we see the inverted bullet for the first time, someone had shot the bullet there. But who and why?
And during the climax, we see Neil saving the protagonist but that means he went down there and came in front of the protagonist to save him in the inverted world. We see that in the normal world happening in reverse.

So when Sator says "we live in a twilight world" and The Protagonist answers "Is that Whitman?", it's just Protagonists humor right? Because he used that twilight world quote at the opera house, but opera happened before Protagonist and Sator met. He could not learn this poem/quote from Sator and started using it afterwards..?

Someone, please tell me if Neil died in the end! The way I see it, he took a bullet for the protagonist whilst unlocking the cage door. So he must've inverted himself after getting the complete algorithm to unlock the cage so the mission was a success and the loop was complete. But at what point did he invert to save the protagonist at the opera house???

I'm sure Nolan is fully aware that the audience rewatching the film has a sort of 'inverted' experience the send time around. You know what happens and can watch the film from a different perspective. It's all very meta, but whether the movie is actually any good I'm not sure about yet.

The whole inversion thing could’ve been left out and the movie just would’ve been about traveling back in time to change things. The inversion thing with things going backwards really didn’t add anything to this movie. Just neat scenes.

Good catch lol. Now that you have put it that way -- the movie is very easy to understand lol. This whole inversion shit is what I still can't understand at ALL!!! I don't even think the movie even fully explain how is the inversion being triggered in the first place. I don't know. Too complex for an average guy like myself! You say there's no time travel but you are describing a process that goes backward and forward in time. For example you start off with opera House and then later go back to a period before then ie the Vietnam hol.
Why does the cars side mirror crack when it's not actually hit by anything?
Do fridges work with reverse entropy? They convert heat to cold don't they?
Bullets may invert back into the gun - then why don't they invert back to bullet factory.
Could Nolan have made this film easier to understand? Did he make it deliberately hard to understand?
    1) by making the dialogue so hard to hear
2)by having the characters speak in very vague language
3)by having so much of the story being unseen.

Just two questions that has been bugging me since I saw it: are there two characters of the protagonist and Kat in the same timeline since they inverted that far back?
And how do they go back that far inverted? How would they eat and drink, or does inverted go back faster than normal time

    • @jamonzonv
      @jamonzonv 4 роки тому

YES, there are 2 Protagonist and 2 Kate. But the relevance of the Protagonist from the past has not started for the plot (or as some say, he was in that moment at the Opera), while the Protagonist of the future was at the battle. The Kat from the future, was lying to Sator as if she were the Past Kat. And bot Kats meet briefly when future Kat jumps from the Yatch and Kat from the past sees her, thinking Sator has an afair.

  • @jeffmarks7

Thanks for the video! Question - If you go through the turnstile and start to move backwards in time say for a 365 straight days, you'll be a year in the past. But at the end of that year of moving backward through time, you go through another turnstile, you'll change direction in time (you start to move forward with everyone else around you), but you'll still be a year in the past, correct? The turnstiles allow you to change direction in time, backward or forward, but you can't jump forward or backward in time to a specified date. So at the end of the film, the Protagonist, Kat, etc, must move forward one day at a time until they "catch up" to the point at which they originally started to move backwards? Wondering if you feel this is correct? Thx!

But if Neil gets killed by taking that bullet in the cave (which is in the past relative to other events), doesn't it give us the answer to the grandfather paradox in the Tenet universe? As in, the plan of reversing time wouldn't have killed the future "bad guys", right?
