    And there wasn’t a single drop of avgas left in the fuel truck, and everyone lived happily ever after.

    Wow! What a spectacular video! Can’t imagine how neat that it would have been to see this in person.
    Got a ride once many years ago in a Mallard with a water landing and takeoff as well one each on land. It was one of the coolest memories in my 50+ years in aviation.

    Great stuff! I love seaplanes in general (I especially geek over Catalinas ❤️), and wanted to see an Albatross in action because the recently deceased Jimmy Buffett 🦜🥭🌴🍍🎸had one of these and flew it himself 🙂!

    My father was an aviation electrician's mate in the US Navy from 1958 to 1962 and specialized on the Albatross. After all his schooling, he got stationed in Osaka, Japan. He flew from San Diego to Osaka via Pearl Harbor and Midway Island in an Albatross. It took two days. The Albatross can travel far; but, not very fast 🤨.

    with todays tech, New Atp engines and EMRAX 348T combined this plane can be the best aircraft ever, 24 hours non stop, at 280knots and 6700Nm. This plane deserves more like and get they in production again

      Richard Mackey, I had the honor of being a member of the Maryland Air National Guard from 1957 to 1966, where I was a flight line mechanic, spent many a hour on, in and around this great air plane then SA 16
      , loved them, also went for rides as often as I could, only regret is I never made a water landing.

      I was watching the Expendables today, saw the plane at the start and wondered the same thing.
      Put a couple of new turboprop engines in, upgrade the avionics to Garmin 1000 and pimp the inside out to be a luxury beast.

    Love this video man that brings me back to Salem mass in the 50s and 60s where the Coast guard flew them regularly . The sound of those radials was awesome as they passed over our little
    boat in the harbor. It really is a site to see up close and in person ! I hope i can get one of these on my flight simulator soon !

    i just watched a cool airshow in knoxville, tn, but there were no Grumans. This has been my favorite plane though above all after remembering it featured in the short lived 80s adventure, The Tale of The Golden Monkey. Of course, Jimmy Buffetts plane, The Hemisphere Dancer, is also an HU16, and ive had many photos taken with it as ive been a Parrothead for many years. Ive seen some Tomcats, P51 Mustangs, P40s, and lots of cool warbirds, but watching this ole boy land in the water again and again is ever so enchanting. The goose might not do all the crazy acrobotic stunts like the warbirds, but it has a beauty all its on as it lands in the water and takes off from land or sea. No disrespect to the warbirds, but lets see em do THIS. Grumans baby! Love the goose.

      I grew up watching tail spin and saved every penny from working in high school up until now and purchased a 1951 model HU16. It cost around $3500 to fill her up but I mostly just keep her in a large boat slip until I can find out what to do with her. I want to fly around the caribbean and island hop with her.

    These are very versatile, long-range, slow and heavy aircraft with very powerful engines, so what is the typical fuel-burn? How many hours would the G111 air-frames have left in them? Can the engines still be overhauled and maintained, or would they need to be replaced with turboprops?

    • @bernardkealey6449
      @bernardkealey6449 6 місяців тому

      The engines can and are maintained, but most owner operators are qualified a&p as well as pilots. Labour of love.
      Those turbines require much more regular maintenance, but are “easier” to maintain and where necessary to fabricate parts. But modern turboprops have the advantage you can put tons more hours on them, and outsourcing the servicing is a lot easier.
      The G111 is likely to restart production in next 3 or so years, but likely cost will be $20m vs an original (non g111, so not able to be flown commercially) currently on market for $300k with a couple of thousand hours left on the airframe.

    • @bernardkealey6449
      @bernardkealey6449 6 місяців тому

      Edit - those piston engines require much more than turbo props
