The more that time passes since we finished reading it, the more I find myself continuing to think about and appreciate it. It’s an unexpectedly powerful novel.

I will never forget this book. It was at the same time wonderful and terrible, just like life. And the ending left me there where Lauren Groff probably wanted the reader to end up: close to my own heart and experience of this life. I will need a while to recover, but I must read it again, slower this time, because I just flew right through it. What an experience! Loved to hear your thoughts on it

My experience of this book was that it was so beautiful and brutal that it hurt. I'm so glad to have read it.

Wow, what a fantastic review of this book. I love how you spoke about it without talking about the plot too much because you completely sold me and now I want to read this. :-) I will have to check out The Matrix as well. I really enjoyed this video and I don’t normally watch single book reviews! You’re a great book reviewer! ✨📚

Thank you for your thoughtful review. I finished The Vaster Wilds 10 days ago and I’m still thinking about the Girl. For me, this book was about her free will and courageous nature. But even now, when I make myself a cup of coffee or cuddle up in blankets, I’m haunted by the thought of her starving in the cold.

I appreciated this review. The Vaster Wilds seemed to be like a writing prompt gone vastly wild. It's beautifully writen but at many times like overworked dough, kind of a stiff and forced exercise letting the author see how far she can extend a voice and tone. This review helped me see more of the depth and story influences.

Hey Eric - here's hoping you and yours are well and wishing the happiest of New Years. As for reading, I, myself, am now involved in an enormous personal project that admits no wiggle room even for the best must-read. I do admit your description of this historical novel did catch my attention. Anyway, I' content with my choice without regret even if I can't read whatever I want whenever I want anymore.

This is the last book that I finished, so it is fresh in my mind and heart. It immediately went on my list of favorite reads of the year. I think it is a beautiful, immersive experience, and like you, I was drawn into the idea that, though the wilds are hard and cruel, it is the first time the girl has had full agency. I absolutely loved it, and Groff's stunning prose.

Fab review Eric. This is a many layered story as you say, however there is an aspect of this book which I haven’t really heard mentioned yet, though I might have missed it. As I was reading I became aware of a number of references eg. Man wanting to concrete over everything, the sight of the buffalo, as well as the indigenous people. Such messages are scattered throughout the story and I think Lauren is including these as devices to highlight the continuing environmental challenges we face. Have you any thoughts on this.

    • @EricKarlAnderson

Yes, absolutely. That feels like one of the messages of the book and thank you for highlighting it.

Apart from the beautiful writing, it was just too bleak for me.
