Dad so appreciate the set up I was able to make from watching this video! He can watch the birds from his window and it's his biggest hobby. Thank you
This is great! Thank you so much for this video. I thought I'd have to hire a handyman to anchor a pole in concrete, etc. I love the idea of doing it myself. Now if I only had that beautiful garden... :)
John,
Thank you for covering every detail. Simple enough so that even I can do it! I’ve never worked with pipe before and you
answered my questions.
I followed your directions, using a 6' pole instead of 5'. It works great. Some wrens moved in after a couple of days. Fun for the grandkids to observe.Thank you!
So thrilled to have found this video! I just put all of the products into my Home Depot cart! I am so TIRED of spending good money on these flimsy amazon poles, this is the way to go! THANK YOU JOHN!
Just wanted to add a millenial review here. I love this video. Really well explained. We live in an area with many people who are in our grandparents age and we used to have a birdhouse that all our elderly neighbours would watch and report to us on what was happening. Which we loved. We had construction done on our backyard which wrecked the birdhouse. Neither my husband or me know how to put up a new birdhouse. They don't teach us that stuff in school! This video is great. We now have children of our own too so our neighbours and children will soon enjoy a birdhouse. Thank you so much for this video! We need more instructions given to us this way! :D
OMG, John's birdhouses have me drooling! Incredible.
I bought iron pipe and a flange yesterday to do this ,, but i like your idea of also having a short piece of pipe to drive
drive in the ground first , i might have to head back to Lowes today lol
Btw way you have all the makings of a great Preacher ,, you may have missed your calling
Excellent, John. I still love the bird house I bought many years ago. best, diann
Thanks so much John! You're a delight 😊🐦
This is just what I needed...thanks and your birdhouse is BEAUTIFUL!
Great video, John! Wonderful bird house
Thanks, John you make it look sooo easy !!!!!
That is a beautiful birdhouse. Thanks for this video, just what I needed. I have a birdhouse I need to mount on a pole.
Nice job. Awesome garden too.
Thanks for the great idea! The birdhouse is beautiful.
Awesome. This was exactly what I was searching for. Thanks for sharing!
Great video. Very simple and informative. Also, beautiful birdhouse❗❗❗
I love your birdhouse
Love the bird house!
Great video you make it look so easy !!!!!!!
Thank you . Very helpful !!
BEAUTIFUL !
Thank you, exactly the information I was looking for and very will explained.
This John is up with the best but You Yanks are so good at this. It is very nice and special. I have learned a lot and will copy some of it. Australia is well behind You. We do not spoil the birds that much but than we do not have winters like You have but they are cold just the same.
Thank you so much for your video! I loved it!
Thank you for this video, it was super helpful!
This tutorial helped me, as I was not sure how to mount my birdhouse, and the reviews on Amazon for birdhouse supports are not very good (i.e. flimsy poles that blow over in the wind). I followed your tutorial, but I used 3/4 inch pipe and fittings instead; my birdhouse is smaller than the one in this video, and the 3/4 inch pipe seems very sturdy for it. I did not have to dig, but only got about 18 inches of the bottom pipe (24 inches long) into the ground--pounding it with the hammer on top of a board didn't make it go in any deeper for me. I used a 60 inch long pipe to support the bird house. The pipes and supplies came to $32, which I thought was kind of expensive, but the ones on Amazon with bad reviews were similar in cost. I will probably spray paint the black pipe, eventually.
Excellent tutorial … just what I was looking for.
Awesome and helpful...
simple floor flange. been using them for years to mount bird houses. available in different sizes 1", 3/4" or 1/2". available in any good hardware store.
5:01 🏠 🐦 whoa 🤯 what cool designs!! ⭕️
Exactly what I was looking for. Went to home depot and got supplies mentioned but in the 3/4
inch size and its cost was $50.00!!! Might want to tell someone about that to prevent a seizure.
Love it! ;--> My husband will help me set up my new birdhouse, if he wants a dove instead of a pecking hen. ;--) Thank you! Maria
Cool! Well done!
Excellent, thank you!!!
Thank you, great video!
Thank you for making this video.Def subscriping.
Great 👍 video!!!
I envy your soft soil. My foothills of Northern CA ground will require a sledge hammer!
Thanks for this video. I thought this, but I didn't think I'd be able to hammer a long enough section of pipe into the ground. Then, I found this video and saw you do exactly that. I went straight to my local Ace Hardware, and in less than hour, I had my black pipe bird pole up and ready to go. I didn't have any scrap wood, but a cheap bathroom mat folded over a few times worked perfectly. A warning to anyone who uses that method: I didn't fold it enough at first, and ended up die-cutting a circle out of the bathroom mat with my first few hammer blows. Make sure to use something you don't mind damaging.
The cheapest similar product I found on Amazon was almost $60, less than five feet tall, and looked flimsy. I saved $10, got a more robust solution, and have the satisfaction of having done it (mostly; I don't own a pipe threader) myself.
I abandoned any bird-housing activity several years ago when my birdhouse (full of young birds) was demolished after a raccoon raid. It was a horrible sight.
I will try this in the spring. Hope it prevents the night marauders. I guess I should make it taller too.
Upside-down bowl. Squirrel baffle. Nothing gets past a wall. Create a wall. Use a split ring or two and threaded rods to secure baffle if necessary.
I absolutely love your bird house!!!. I would love to have one it’s just a bit out of my price range unfortunately. Beautiful work though. 😊
Fantastic!!
Thanks, Greg. Hope you're well. Regards, to Glenn. J
Ohh boy. I sure hope this fixes our problem. 👍🏼
Thanks for the demonstration from the beginning of the end very good videoing I know it’s not easy to get the angles of the video when you’re working. 🔨
excellent, thank you.
great video now I know what to do
Thank you.
Excellent! I'm going to try this. Last year I used a wooden pole and a raccoon climbed up and killed the fledglings. I'll make the pole longer and spray it with oil to help prevent invaders.
Please use non-toxic vegetable oil and not toxic machine oil, which could harm wildlife.
Or surround the pole with a Slinky (spring toy). I saw this before and climbing animals fell to the ground when they grabbed onto the Slinky and stretched it.
why is the video quality so good?
I like your intro song
... and the outro song
What kind of piping is used? Lookl like 1 inch gas pipes?
Is it not too low from the ground only 150 cm?
You know this is just my luck I've been looking for a pole mount for my bird feeder. I took my bird feeder in and asked him if they had a pint that would fit in the long round divot on the bottom. Did you know that employee looked at me like I had three heads. I didn't know about the threaded flange. So thank you.
Thanks. Is there a metal plate you can put under the birdhouse before the flange to stop the pole from damaging the bottom if you really wanted to crank it down?
The flange you have is defective. The pole should not be able to screw THROUGH the flange out the other side. The flange threading should stop just short of the top such that the pole cannot make it out the other side. Replace flange or change brands.
@@stitchedpumpkin5905 oh I see, gotcha.
I haven't bought anything yet, I was just curious. But I see what you're saying, thanks.
I just got the first one mounted on a tree.
The second one I built still needs the portal drilled then we mount it.
Tall galvanized pipe (black pipe for gas/indoor, galvanized for water/outdoor.)
2ft galvanized pipe, in ground.
Coupling, to fit the two together.
Alternately (coupling unavailable), larger in ground galvanized pipe, black rigid discharge plastic pipe cut to fit inside, taller (10ft) pole mounted inside rigid inside larger (acts as wind vibration control - don't shake the babies.)
Bolts, not screws, for flange (don't stab the birds.)
Size pipe is based on size flange. Size flange is based on size birdhouse. E.g. owl vs wren. Measure bottom of birdhouse floor where flange will be secured. Drill extra drainage holes in corners if necessary (don't drown the babies.) Galvanized pipe will match flange size. Coupling will fit pipes.
I was wondering about the other smaller piece of pipe with coupler . Thanks for clarifying items.
Can anyone please post the links to everything that was used in this video?
Hello I have a great birdhouse and I think it would be better off mounted from the base on the pool thanks for doing the video
With extremely hard ground can I pre-drill a hole into the ground? Or dig a hole and backfill? Using a long pole as opposed to a two piece pole.
Hey, Carl ... with that situation maybe dig hole and set it in cement. The two piece is great for ttransport and installing. You can always unscrew upper and change location john
What kind of pipe is that?
Can you buy the bird house?
I love it😊
I love this. Where can I purchase these birdhouses?
Hi Cindhi; we receive many requests. Our products are only available now through our website: www.barnsintobirdhouses.com. Why not call us at the Studio: 616-456-5991. Best wishes, John Guertin/Artisan.
Did you paint the pipe?
Hello;
This 1 inch black pipe normally comes with a coat of black paint, but you can paint em any color ... a can of spray Hunter green looks pretty good, too. But the black just seems to disappear. Best, J
where do you get pipes like that ??? i went to home depot... and they were not able to help me
Hello, Suzanne; I buy all of my pipe from Home Depot here in Grand Rapids, MI. It's just simple 1 inch diameter black pipe cut to size and threaded. Can't imagine they don't have this common fixture for sale. Maybe try Menards or Lowes as well. Small hardware stores are always more expensive. best, John Guertin
@@barnsintobirdhouses9663 Black pipe is not meant to be used in wet weather. Galvanized pipe is a better alternative.
So how would you eliminate house sparrows from using your bluebird house.
How do professional bluebird stewards do it? You may not want to hear this, but you have to cull the flock. the best way is to watch closely. Set up a number of birdhouses to reduce competition. Remove or trap sparrows physically, dispose of them. There you have it, j
My bird house base isn’t as big as the one in your video, but it’s taller, and I think (cosmetically), the ¾” pole will look better. Is there a weight gauge for the pole size - like if you bird house weighs this much, use a 1” pole, or if this much a ¾” pole? Anyone?
Thinking, the stronger the better, will also look better. Use 1" pipe. j.
OK, thanks for the reply, and will do. They'll have a nice, sturdy house.
My only issue as a bluebirder is there’s no way to open the nest box to be able to monitor the nest. There should be a way to open it to be able to look in and check. Taking off the roof isn’t an option for that.
Is there a size hole that bluebirds can get in but sparrows cant?
Hello; no, bluebirds and sparrows are the same size. j
Can you please list items to buy and dimensions of pipes, screws and flange in the comments section? No one at my Home Depot knew what I was talking about. My video won't load inside the store. Thanks
This reminds me of the movies when they dig graves in six feet of loamy topsoil. If life were this easy we'd all be softies. Nice birdhouse though. Man, that black pipe has sure gotten expensive!
You have a resemblance to Roger Daltrey.
There are several components to doing a pro job. One plan I discovered which successfully combines these is the Aviary magic method (check it out on google) definately the most useful info that I've heard of. Check out this unbelievable website.
Do you need to have a dead animal on your feet?
I have done very similar with Woodglut designs.
I will try to do it with Woodglut plans.
I heard very good opinions about the Woodglut plans.
i bet the neighborhood cats cant climb that.....
The woodwork design on the face of the birdhouse is too dangerous for the birds. Their little feet and legs can get stuck. When you come out to feed them, you will (eventually) find a dead bird there. Most humans won't be able to overcome the sadness of it.
ugh i had to watch this because of design class
Drama queen?
Yeah it's a tough life. But just wait...it gets worse! :-)
