Last weekend, I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Arnprior, Ontario. I was excited to explore the town, try out some of its restaurants and cafes, and visit some of its parks. I was not disappointed.
Arnprior is a charming town located along the Ottawa River, just a short drive from Ottawa. Arnprior, Ontario, is a small town located on the ancestral lands of the Anishinabewaki and Algonquin people. It was incorporated as a town in 1892 by Scottish immigrants, who were drawn to the area's lumbering industry. The Madawaska and Ottawa rivers served as a main trade route for lumber, and the town thrived as a result.
Despite its history as a lumbering town, Arnprior is now a charming tourist destination with plenty of dining and shopping options. The town's streets and sidewalks are well-kept, preserving historic buildings and adding beautiful flower beds in the warmer months. It has a small town feel, with friendly locals and a relaxed pace of life. I started my visit by exploring the town's dining and shopping scene.
One of my favorite places to eat in Arnprior was Ottawa valley coffee. This cozy cafe serves up delicious coffee, pastries, and sandwiches in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and I enjoyed the laid-back vibe of the place.
After fueling up on food, I headed to Robert Simpson Park to take a leisurely walk. The park is situated along the shores of the Ottawa and Madawaska rivers, and offers stunning views of the water and surrounding landscape. This park has a variety of amenities, including a gazebo that can be booked for weddings and other special events. I was impressed by the park's well-maintained paths, and the variety of plant life and wildlife that I encountered along the way.
To truly understand Arnprior, I visited the Arnprior and District Museum. The museum's permanent timber exhibit tells the story of how the town was built on lumber, and how this industry drove its growth in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I was fascinated to learn about the lumbermen like Daniel McLachlin, who made their fortune from logging and sawmills, and the town's quarries that produced marble that was used in the original Centre Block of Parliament Hill. While many of these industries have since disappeared, Arnprior remains a vibrant and welcoming community.
Overall, I had a wonderful time in Arnprior. The town is full of hidden gems, from its charming cafes to its beautiful parks and rich history. I can't wait to come back and explore more of what the town has to offer.

Thank you for this! I grew up in Arnprior, but I live in Virginia now, and haven't been back to Canada in several years, so it was nice to see the sights of home… I even caught sight of the building my apartment was in as well as one of the places I used to work!
