Nice video My late father worked for the Union Castle Line, but left in the early 60's when I was 4, shortly after he reached the position of Chief Engineer. he always remembered with great fondness his time at sea. Even in later life, when he had Alzheimer's, he still would speak about the ships. On the day before he died, he even commented on the colour of his duvet, lilac, just like the Union castle ships he said. We all laughed.
Three generations of my family served as Chief Engineers with the Union castle line for almost !00 years. It started with; Thomas Stewart, qualified as chief on 1/5/1911. Hugh Morrison Stewart, qualified as chief on 15/8/1931. Ticket number 71731. Hugh served the company for over 50 years. He eventually was made superintendent engineer for the line supervising construction of the ships. And most recently my uncle; Andrew Morrison stewart, qualified as chief on 17/10/1968. Ticket number 116268. Andrew met and married a Durban lady called Mary and emigr ated to South Africa where he worked for the South African harbour service. I was brought up with stories from Andrew and Hugh about their times with UCL. Sad they’re not here now to enjoy these posts on UA-cam
Thank you for sharing this little movie! Wonderful to see the Transvaal Castle on film and in color. She really was a beautiful hotel and resort at sea. There was a calm, graciousness to life aboard. Just sailing on the Transvaal Castle would be vacation enough for me. I wonder how much of the interiors were unchanged through the ship's career.
Great film. The world was still in order then and everyone knew their place in society as assigned to them by God. That was the South Africa I lived in for two years and was happy until the cars burned in 1976.
Spent 2 weeks on this fine old ocean liner back in 1998 , this ship had a good crew and fine food , many a nite spent in the club europa nite club on board
So many fireplaces on a ship of the sun and really peal a peach? Yes a friendly ship just remember when you dress for dinner don't use a clip on bow tie, or everyone will know your common!
Nice video

I sailed on this ship in 1979 when I was 16. It was then the Carnival Festivale ship. Talk about memories to this day!
Great video
