According to the book, Herbert Soebel (David Schwimmer's character) was hated by the men of Easy Company, but every single one of them credit the man for turning them into an elite fighting force. Absolute crap as a commanding officer, but as a training officer they say he was perfect. On the other hand, Damian Lewis's character, Richard Winters, came within a hair of being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his acts of valor and personal leadership.
There are lots of commanders like that: excellent at building and training a unit, but useless in actual combat. Perhaps the most famous example is Gen. George McClellan.
Absolutely correct. Sobel was an exemplary instructor, more than exemplary really, given how well Easy Co. performed. But, even in simulated battle drills, he became extremely nervous and careless, prone to not poor decisions and ignoring any input from his officers/NCO's. When he took out his anger for being tricked on Winter's, the company rebelled. The book is great, so is David Kenyon Webbster's "Parachute Infantry", and Richard Winters biography "Beyond Band of Brothers" and his auto-biography "Biggest Brother". Winter's losing out on the Medal of Honor basically due to a technicality (they didn't like awarding too many to the same division), is a fairly big tragedy...though, it's more about how everyone else viewed the man, than he wanting recognition (which isn't abnormal for soldiers).
The only reason Winters didn’t get the CSM was because only one CSM was awarded to each division per campaign. For the 101st in Normandy, the medal was given to LTC Robert Cole for personally leading a bayonet charge to break his unit out of German encirclement. Winters settled for the Distinguished Service Cross
Interesting note about the cast's preparation for this show: When all the actors who were going to be playing the members of Easy Company landed at the airport they were told to fly to, they were gathered into a group by some military technical advisors of the show, who were taking them to a slightly truncated basic training led by former drill sergeant and long-time movie advisor Captain Dale Dye (who played Sobel's superior officer in this episode). Once they were together, the advisors told them that for the duration of their training, they were to be referred to by their character's names. They had to stay in barracks the whole time, and were treated like recruits in basic training for the most part. The majority of all this was recorded for posterity on film, and is a feature in the DVD/Blu-Ray editions of the show.
Sobel was a martinet in real life. He was a sergeant in the National Guard before the war, and got a commission into the Airborne corps on the strength of that because they had to expand so rapidly. He was an angular, lanky bloke with an oversized need to prove his manhood (why he'd been in the National Guard) and undersized competence for the task of being a combat commander of infantry. So what he did the whole time was tear down the men under him to prove he was in charge, which helped from a training point of view, beccause it bonded them together tighter, and made them physically fitter, but he wasn't keeping up with his own infantry officer training as he went, as the other junior officers, especially Winters, were, because he was too obsessed with asserting his authority every moment of the day. So he sucked at map reading and terrain appreciation, which is reading the landscape in terms of defensibility and where the enemy would be likely to hide and place machine guns and whatnot, and how to go about advancing from ditch to road to woodline and so on. And because he wasn't a natural leader, he wasn't calm under fire, because he wasn't used to intense competition or frequent conflict. Winters, on the other hand, was more naturally gifted, which Sobel resented, and had been captain of his school football team, so he was comfortable with making swift decisions and things moving rapidly in general and coping with conflict by working together as a team to change the situation against another team. Team sports had prepared him for the team conflict of battle, to that extent. Sobel's story is actually tragic, because he always felt thwarted of military glory to vindicate his manhood and ability, and he became a very bitter, angry man, whose own children hated him.
That's fascinating - thanks for sharing (also I learned a new word - 'martinet!'). This show clearly was (and is) so beloved because it doesn't flinch from portraying flawed characters which, to me, is even more impressive since it's based on real people. I imagine there may have been a temptation to neaten up certain characters around the edges to make them more heroic or to seem more respectful but... I really admire the seemingly truthful way they adapted the source material (the book and real life). I had difficulty trying to decide whether I liked Sobel in the first episode or at least whether I should admire him. Ultimately, whether I like him or not is irrelevant. As you say, certain aspects of his character were useful in an impossible situation but where his weaknesses appear... Winters seems to slot right in and excel. It's fascinating to hear his children disliked him. I can well believe it. I imagine he must have been an incredibly difficult man. It's a shame that he couldn't be satisfied with his achievements... though I suppose it was a different time and achievement in war was probably a real measuring stick when comparing yourself to other men (and society as a whole judging you). Ultimately, he survived and for that I feel he should be grateful. Obviously I should admire him for serving in the first place.
Sobels last years ended in the most tragic way you can imagine. He tried to kill him self in 1970 but he failed and instead he ended up blind and alone, when he "finally" died in 87 no one came to the funeral . The troopers hated him but I think it was Sgt Lipton that wrote in his book about easy company and the war that he and many of his comrades would never have survived without Sobels training.
I had a command team in the Army that was universally hated, with betting pools for which companies would get credit for killing which senior leaders if we went to war. Made for friendships that I still treasure today.
Sobel was a rather tragic person. He could not over come his inadequacies as a person. Both real and self perceived. After the continued training assignment he was attached to the regimental headquarters unit as a logistics officer. He did jump at Normandy. He moved to the National Guard later on and retired a Lt. Colonel. Later in life he tried to commit suicide with a small caliber pistol blinding himself permanently. He died in a vets home in 87 due to malnutrition.
What's worse, he was completely estranged from his family. His own children didn't speak to him. They all refused to speak to him, and when he died, there was no memorial service for him. No funeral. Nothing.
at 13:50......you say "its like heroic..and its tragic...kind of darkly comic"....You just summed up War...well done. Band of Brothers connects all types of people. From the USA....Keep on smilin and best wishes on getting yourself better
An Excellent Series and so was Pacific. Glad you watched them. Its so important that what happened then does not get lost in the fog of time and we make sure the ones that died, about 20 million soldiers and 40 million civilians, are NEVER forgotten in at least this simple way. Tell the stories, think about there pain there heart ache there sacrifices. Its the least we can do for what they did for all of us.
Donnie Wahlberg was also in it. You showed him for a moment, but could not remember his name. If you watch the entire series, you will see more of him. David Schwimmer landing the role of Captain Sobel was controverial for fans of the book, as like you mentioned, he was known as the 'Friends' character. However, he received accolades for his performance. He did very well. I don't now if you know this, but Band of Brothers is true story and based on real people and their lives. The book was written to document what real men lived through. Winters, Sobel and others were real people. As I noted to you earlier, Episode 2 picks up right where Episode 1 leaves off. Band of Brothers is widely known as a 'living history' miniseries which documents the reality of the War. HBO made a counterpart series to Band of Brothers, called The Pacific which documents the United States Marine Corps' activities in the Pacific during WW2. It is also based on real people and their actual life. I encourage you to finish the Band of Brothers series, as it is a very good way to learn about what these veterans (Not just US, but British and others) endured during this war. Happy to have you back!!!!
Clmt87 Thank you so much! And thanks for the info - I didn't know it was based on real people, that really is fascinating. Of course I'm more familiar with the events but not how they unfolded. I'm going to react to the latest Outlander episode next and then I'll film another BoB. :) YES - Donnie Wahlberg!! I cut out a lot of moments where I was like 'argh I recognise him but I can't remember what from!' Oh crap - I just realised Johnny (Dexter Fletcher) is the same guy that directed Eddie The Eagle. So cool.
I have just discovered your channel during Covid and I am enjoying it tremendously. I am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and spent some wonderful time at Mildenhall AB. Damien Lewis became one of my favorite actors after this series. He was so strong in the part that I still have a hard time separating the great actor from his role as Major Dick Winters. Thank you Juliette for the reactions! I have subscribed to your channel and appreciate your passion for these great programs.
Thankyou so much! I'm glad you enjoyed them! I've seen Damien Lewis a lot on British TV growing up but Band of Brothers absolutely made me admire him more.
This is the first time I have ever seen anyone react to this show, it is considered the number 1 HBO show of all time right there with The Sopranos and Game Of Thrones, also there are more explosions than the movie Saving Private Ryan.
I started with your E02, was super impressed, and had to come back here to start at the beginning. Now skipping to E03 and *Subbed.* Love your take on this miniseries. It's very dear to my heart, as a former US Marine. In case no one's pointed it out, the music for this was composed by the late, great Michael Kamen (RIP). Unfortunately, with 2010's Pacific, which is about the Marine Corps, they had to resort to Hans Zimmer, and his cohort. Typical, though, really. We Jarheads have always had to deal with the Army's hand-me-downs.
So I've just discovered your reaction videos. I enjoyed Band of Brothers thoroughly when it was first on and I've only watched your reaction to this episode but plan on watching the rest. It makes it all fresh again for me to see it through your eyes so thank you for posting these. My grandfather was in World War II and I appreciate your interest in Band of Brothers
That's wonderful - welcome! That's exactly why I love reaction videos - you get to relive something you love as if for the first time... but also with the benefit of knowing what's coming! My favourite BoB reaction so far has been to Carentan. Hope you enjoy it!
4:54 Instant Sub! I have never seen someone realize without being told by someone else that Simon Pegg had a small part in BOB...He has two actual speaking lines too, his American accent is just good enough that most people would never even realize without you pointing it out.
Incredible reaction to such a great series. The realism of the actors and the shots pull you into this. I grew up watching the 'world war II" movies and this is easily one of my favorites.
The sheer amount of stars on this show that later became famous is quite astounding tbh, almost every one was relatively unknown then and now huge stars a lot of people joke around that BoB is where all the stars fame came from.
Well hello there, welcome back!, we missed you! I'm so glad you're feeling better and came back to brighten our day with your videos. And here we are, at the calm before the storm for Easy Company, because believe it or not, from here on out it''s war all the way through to the end; yes there are breaks from fighting but can you really call chilling in the ruins of a building while you can still hear gun fire and shells exploding in the background "chilling"?.... This is one of those rare shows where, no matter how eager I was to see the next episode and the resolution of some cliffhangers, I never skipped the intro, because there's just something so melancholic about that music, and also an eerily unsettling quality to it that by the time it's over and the episode starts you're on alert again, and for this particular show, that is a masterfully crafted way of presenting you with the next chapter of the plot. By the end of the episode, were you glad you didn't actually had something to drink? haha, that drinking game would have been devastating to your liver, and from my part I can say I was glad you didn't go through with it. Regarding how much content you can put on the video (of the show I mean), I'm not sure if HBO has specific rules for it, because for Game of Thrones I'v heard they have a 10 min footage limit for how much reactors could show in their videos, but don't quote me on that; you should definitely check that one detail if you decide to keep reacting to this show. And also, it's 10 eps long, not 8. Yes!, Attack on Titan! While I can't tell you much about the story, I can tell you this: ep. 1 is a make or break episode, which is great if you're new not only to the show but also to anime in general, because not many shows have that. I'm definitely looking forward to that reaction. And whichever version you pick (subtitled or dubbed) is fine, don't get into unnecessary debates about it, just pick the one that makes you feel comfortable and you believe will improve your experience. Again, glad you're back. ( '⌣')
How beautifully put! And yes, I was glad lol. Didn't fancy having 8+ shots of vodka! I think you're right about 10 minutes. That's what I try to do in all my videos - though it's only HBO that have explicitly said 10 minutes is fine . I've heard on Sesskasays channel that she has found that using scenes that the official Doctor Who channel have uploaded can cause issues. Also I had an issue with music in the background of the GoT finale etc. I try to use 10 minutes of footage but always come out under, I believe. It's hard because if I highlight all the clips in Premiere Pro and check the Info panel it SHOULD tell me the duration and it does... but it always seems overly long. I've recently started copy/pasting the clips a bit further up the timeline and piecing them together into one big clip and checking the duration that way... and it always turns out much shorter! So I believe in this video it was around 7 minutes or so. Aaand that was probably more detail than you needed. ;) I'm glad you mentioned subtitled or dubbed!! That was something I was intending to ask in the comments. Personally, I would always, always go with subtitles but I am wondering if dubbed would be more understandable for viewers (instead of straining to read the subs in the tiny box!) Glad to see your username again too! :)
Listen, I'm partial to subs too, but I'm like that with any movie or tv show, so, I'm probably no the most partial person to comment on the issue haha, but again, subbed or dubbed, it all depends on which one is the most comfortable to you, because we come here to watch your reaction, not the show itself, so pick the one you like the most and enjoy it.
You have to remember young lady this was not a story of fiction written for the screen. This was the true story of the 506th Paras in WWII. Those "actors" represented real men telling, true stories.
I wish that you would have included the capture f the old Gentleman & his Bicycle. It was hilarious and the n Old Gentleman was so good natured about his predicament.
Cool to see someone reacting to this series. I've seen it a lot, but then again I'm really interested in military history. Suppose one of the reasons is my family being in many wars. I'm still trying to figure out my grandfather's unit, but it's hard to find much on him when the place that stored records burnt down some time ago. I do know that he was a paratrooper, who jumped in along with these guys. I know they are 101st, but there was also the 82nd that jumped with them...I think. So, he could have been either. Maybe after you finish it, you'll react to 'The Pacific'. Since it's practically Band of Brothers 2. I still kinda like this one more, but I did enjoy it. I just like this one more for the setting, I know more about the European theater of war, than I did about the pacific theater. And the characters are great.
Welcome back and glad you're feeling better! BoB is 8 episodes I believe and is uniformly great throughout. The thing to remember is that all these "characters" are based on real people. There is (was) a real Winters etc. I didn't see it in your reaction, but there are interspersed interview snippets with some of the surviving guys, and Winters is one, but I don't believe they identify them until the last episode. If you keep watching (and you should), it is a roller coaster of pride and patriotism and terror and sadness and shock and horror - just like real war was in those days (no drones to attack from half a world away). It's basically the story of all kinds of guys thrown together by war - guys who thought it would be fun, guys who were scared constantly, guys who really didn't want to be there, but couldn't get out of it, etc. Just like real life, except that death and dismemberment could come at any second. It's a great "study" of how humans react under extreme stress. There is a reason those people (along with Brits surviving the Blitz etc.) were called the Greatest Generation. Because they were and deserve all respect for it. And yes, Schwimmer (Friends guy) was meant to be a dick at all times and because of that was pathetic, so occasional pity for him is natural, and naturally short lived because he would just be a dick again almost immediately.
failuremagnet I was going to include it but didn't - I was impressed by the inclusion of interviews and... one of them is Winters? Omfg! How wonderful. I find it quite difficult to work out how much footage I'm using (so end up using not very much). Okay 8 episodes... guess I'll HAVE to do it. 😉 Your description of the types of people depicted really interests me and is something I can see in the show already. Each and every person should be admired even if they were afraid or unwilling, in my opinion. There was a moment where Sobel is freaking out during their first training drill in the woods - I'm not sure if I edited it out or not but I said something along the lines of 'oh, he's one of those people that's cruel in his own domain but then when it comes to war he's afraid'... but then I backtracked because I felt it was a harsh assessment. There's no shame in crumbling or being afraid. But I can criticise him for being actively mean. 😉 One of my favourite stories from the Blitz is from a photograph of a shop front which had been half exploded away. The sign in the window read: "Even more Open than usual, Mr Hitler"
I think I've heard about that shop window sign (or seen it) before and yes, it's a great testament to the defiance of the British people in the face of crisis and overwhelming odds. On a related note, not sure if you have time to read much (with the degree looming), but there's a great pair of novels by Connie Willis called Blackout and All Clear which deal with a time traveler historian who goes back to study the Blitz and gets stuck there for most of it. Very realistic/nostalgic and puts you right in the center of the "action" much as BoB does with the war. I'd highly recommend them.
I'm reading Outlander at the moment which is about a woman from the 40s who goes back to the 18th century and gets stuck there so... that sounds familiar! I'm definitely interested in a similar premise but with WWll so thank you for the recommendation! There's an audiobook too so it's definitely going on my list. I originally studied English Lit at university and that sort've killed my ability to sit down and read so I choose audiobooks 9 times out of 10 nowadays! Also, I watched Timeless whilst I was on hiatus which has similar time travely stuff so I'm definitely in that mood at the moment!
Ahh good. You're all set then. I'm an Outlander veteran as well - all 8(?) of them so far. And they've done a pretty good adaptation for the TV series as well. The Connie Willis things are a bit different in that the main character knows where and when she's going and is as prepared as she can be for WWII Britain, but needless to say, that's not anywhere near as prepared as she could have hoped. I've been on a time travel bender for the last few years and watched Timeless as well. Another good series of books I just finished are the St. Mary's series by Jodi Taylor. A bit more comedy than the others but definitely pleasant reads in themselves. But you must read/listen to the Connie Willis' before those as certain aspects of the Taylor books seem a little "borrowed" from the Willis books.
The reason instructors are hard on you in basic is because as a soldier if you can't do the little things right how are you expected to do the big things right.
The warrior spirit is still alive and well today. You should do a review on the first ever recorded Medal of Honor. It's pretty insane what Chapman went through and his heroism is next to none.
Regards filming of the series the vast majority of it was filmed in the UK hence the large number of British actors in the cast. I actually went up to London and waited for hours at the The Casting Collective with hundred of others to try and get in as an extra. Never got a call mind! :o)
I showed my wife The Pacific. We are both fans of Band Of Brothers, but The second series is a VERY different watching experience. My wife did not like it at all.
Yea The Pacific is VERY different from Band of Brothers. The gore is upped. PTSD is touched on more. The mental toll of war is a big theme as you watch the main characters become shells of their former selves by the end. Both series are great but The Pacific definitely requires a thicker stomach to get through
“I’m going to have to watch this now aren’t I?……Shit” That made me laugh because when it came out 20 years ago, my ex made me watch the first episode (I was never into war films so wasn’t interested at all) and that was exactly my reaction after I finished the first episode. And i am glad I did watch it. Best tv series ever made
"This is a different kind of army. If you look back through history, you will see men fighting for pay, for women, for some other kind of loot. They fight for land, power, because a king leads them or just because they like killing. But we are here for something new. This has not happened much in the history of the world. We are an army out to set other men free." - Joshua Chamberlain, The Killer Angels
I was worried about you, so glad you are back, and hopefully feeling better. I understand that you couldn't quite pull it together to let us know but just know that we can also be a source of support. Anyway, glad you are back. Hope you are well.
The planes used were real planes from the era but there were only 3 useable at the time and so used some digital copy & pasting to fill the sky with them.
I am delighted to find this series. So few people have reacted to this, that I am definitely subscribing. I hope you react to "The Pacific" as well. It's basically the sister show to this series, but it's in the Pacific Theater against Japan, instead of Atlantic against Germany.
Chris Bowman I actually just posted episode 4 of The Pacific. ;) Welcome! Hope you enjoy this series. It's actually funny for me to see this video after the emotional journey the show took me on. You'll see!
Excellent! Sounds great. I can't wait. The Pacific is MUCH darker in my opinion. As dark as Band of Brothers gets, it's not as oppressive as The Pacific was because the island hopping campaign and vicious jungle warfare against Japan is still one of the most horrible and brutal experiences in modern historical warfare. Vietnam also being in the running. Either way, I'm glad to have found your channel.
I know that you've already seen this so there are no spoilers. Winters became a legend within Easy Company and the whole of 2nd Battalion, he was a great combat leader. He only died a few months ago, as did Babe Hefron. If you like these sort of things, (I know that you're watching The Pacific at the moment), but you might want to look at 'Generation Kill', about US Marines in Iraq.
Glad to see someone reacting to this film series. The military training was rough and tough but it's to toughen up the men more for the challenges of being in the army. By the way you got yourself a new subscriber in me beautiful.
Juliette Reacts you're very welcome ;). I hope you enjoy watching that series as well. I mainly like the band of Brothers series because one of my grandfathers was in the 82nd Airborne during WWII and also fought in the same battles. I watch the Band of Brothers series at least once a year since I bought the DVDs back in the early 2000s.
Luke K thank you so much! Really sorry but I've already seen it! Sci-Fi/Fantasy is my favourite genre. I'm also listening to the audiobooks at the moment. :)
Juliette Reacts You’re very welcome. And oh you’ve seen it! That’s still awesome heh I’m glad, it’s so good; it needs 10x the love it already gets! Same here, sci-fi and fantasy is the best. I’ve gotten through books 1-3 and I’m working my way through 4 (a bit slow in the middle imo). Sending love from Texas. Peace
I'm currently reading The Expanse before I watch it. I'm about to start book 5. It's such a great series. I like "Hard Sci Fi" more than "Soft Sci Fi."
Chris Bowman I need to catch up! Can't wait for the next series with Amazon £££. I like all sci-fi and fantasy! TE is defined the hardest scifi I'm watching at the moment though.
Juliette, I was happy to see this notification. Sorry to hear the reason for your absence, though. I have family members who have to deal with bouts of depression, and I fully understand how hard things can be during one. Just do what you need to do for you. You do some of the best, most insightful reaction videos. So of course your people are gonna stay on as subs. As far as me, I've been watching The Orville, and it seems to be surprising many people, some calling it the better show between it and Star Trek: Discovery. On Rotten Tomatoes it currently has a 92% audience score compared to STD's 58%. And I've found a channel here on YT that is doing re reviews of GOT episodes. They've just done S1E3, and it's interesting how events in old shows foreshadowed things that happened in more recent episodes. If you're interested I can link it to you, the shows are usually around 20 minutes in length. And it looks like there's gonna be plenty of time until the next season of GOT, so this kinda satiates any GOT hunger. Anyway, looking forward to the next Premiere Pioneer :-)
Dr Zoom I would definitely be interested in that link! I guess The Orville will have to go back in my box. It's funny, I keep reading that critics hate TO but audiences love it - and the reverse is true with Discovery. I was massively surprised to learn fans are unsure/actively dislike Discovery. I really, really like it. Yes, the first couple of eps were a bit dry but I think as a final product it will be appreciated more. Maybe it would've benefited from the binge-watch format. Unfortunately my Internet is down (using my 4G atm) but when I'm back online I'll be posting an Outlander reaction, Attack On Titan and another BoB. Thanks so much for your kind words. Insightful is the goal - I definitely intend to branch out into reviews, breakdowns and video essays as well as reactions one day when I'm doing better. 😉
I'll just link you to the first episode of the GOT Rewatch Analysis. ua-cam.com/video/_CvFrTyvLdU/v-deo.html About The Orville, I come to this show as a Macfarlane fan, not as a Trek fan. And I think Fox really did the show a disservice selling the show prior to the premiere as a Family Guy meets Star Trek hybrid, as it most definitely is Macfarlane's homage to the original series and TNG. There are moments of humor that kinda interrupt the flow of the show and fall a little flat in the first two episodes. But as the show has progressed they are working them in better and the jokes are just funnier. Anyway I'll get off my TO soapbox (sorry if it seems I'm trying hard to push you on this series ;-) ). But it has been a fun show to watch so far. As far as Discovery, I haven't watched any of it. But it seems quite a bit darker than other Trek series. And not surprisingly (here in the U.S.) I think some people are bringing their politics with them when watching it and not coming to the show with an open mind. As our president says "Sad!"
Whoops! Looks like this comment got caught in my spam filter. Thanks for the link. No don't worry - I'm intrigued! You should see the amount of times I've spammed channels asking them to react to Luther or Broadchurch. ;) I haven't seen any of the Star Trek TV shows so maybe that's why I'm taking to Discovery more than others!
Positive thoughts on video. I liked your face. Your reactions were pretty much the same as mine. It was overall a good video. You got yourself a new subscriber.
Great job as always! Fun fact, on the note about Coca Cola... some have argued the company was as troop friendly as it was in part to avoid the sugar rationing it otherwise would have been subject to, and to stay ahead of the competition. www.nww2m.com/2011/08/coca-cola-the-pause-that-refreshed-2/ (As usual it's more complex than that, but it's a cool historical note to me anyway)
Sobel was Ultimately a great training officer. it was the point that his troops would always be getting better and be better than everyone else. he just wasn't great in the field. being a dick is required to get he best out of your troops often. reassigning him to training officer is tactical, because he will make other units the best units as he did with easy company. But it's also the public acknowledgment by his superiors that he is not good in the field, which is humiliating to almost any officer, let alone one who had put so much into training the one company.
I'm hoping I should get away with it. There's an agreement between HBO and YT reactors that 10 minutes of footage is acceptable. I always use less than that. 😉
Ooh that's quite a niche suggestion. Why choose that? You a big fan? It aired on UK TV ages ago and I did watch a couple of episodes but I barely remember (only because it was so long ago!) I remember it being scary!
Good god, that's terribly sad. I've heard he wasn't a very nice man but I guess at least his war contribution should've been honoured. Of course, it's easy for me to say and I'm sure Easy has their reasons.
Yeah,...you know what,...there’s a huge,...HUGE difference between simulated combat,...and actual combat,...your going into theater with someone who has actual experience,....so who would you want standing next to you when the shit hits the fan.
Hello, hope youre feeling better. Band of Brothers isnt such a good series to watch when depressed 😅 or i guess it could be, to see how bad life could be. Just discovered your channel, but if you like this the pacific is good as well
The real Sobel (the guy that David Schwimmer is playing) wasn't this bad in real life, as far as I know. They made him into this tool for entertainment purposes. Otherwise this is a great series, but I kind of feel bad for this guy. He actually got much more respect IRL as far as I know.
@@JulietteReacts wooow :D that's cool my brother into computers too :) I wish I could study acting or whatever but dont know where to in norway :/ btw could you do me a favor do a reaction to movie Max Manus or the 12th man ... I'm sure they both on netflix
👋🏻 there is no democracy in the military..... there’s only follow orders.... some men from the lowest rank to a general can be exceptionally cruel .... if someone with a rank higher than yours doesn’t like you , your done for.... and there are men like winters that any man in eat company would take a bullet for him as winters would do for his men...yes , they hated the asshole , but he did make them who they were and are...my drill instructor was a prick... after boot camp he saw me gave me a hug and pulled my hair commenting it was too long but with the warmest smile 😃.... I would have taken one for him if I had to 🙈
No, I understood that. I mention that I feel conflicted because I understand that he has to be hard on them but I also felt he took too much delight in fucking people over.
Maybe, he did have a certain pettyness to him. But part of a instructors duty is to be a bastards, because it gives the men a concrete "foe" to hate. The best portrayal would be Gunny Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. He's a hardass but not actually malicious. Post WWII training was far better at the whole mental conditioning aspect.
Winters was good but not deserving of the MOH
Small pedantic nitpick, it's just the "Medal of Honor". "Congressional" is not part of the name.
honestly David Schwimmer did a really great job as playing captain Soebel character
Capt dyr is a badass. 3 purple hearts.
Yep. Capt. Dye gave them the same training that the actors in Saving Private Ryan had.
@@MotRi1986 I remember hearing or reading that no one came to his funeral, that's really messed up.
He made them all hate him. He gave them all something in common. First step in building cohesion.
Den E - that is fckn smart , nvr thought of it that way
and they were the best company
Drill instructors use this technique to this day. The DS in Full Metal Jacket does the same thing.
Damm that's brutal.
What's worse, he was completely estranged from his family. His own children didn't speak to him. They all refused to speak to him, and when he died, there was no memorial service for him. No funeral. Nothing.
@@rkstevenson5448 fuck thats really fucking sad
This series is straight up cinematic candy. So well shot, and assembled. By far my favourite Mini Series.
Glad someone finally reacted to this series
at 13:50......you say "its like heroic..and its tragic...kind of darkly comic"....You just summed up War...well done. Band of Brothers connects all types of people. From the USA....Keep on smilin and best wishes on getting yourself better
Simon Pegg, James MacAvoy, Tom Hardy, Colin Hanks and Jimmy Fallon can be seen in smaller parts and of course David Schwimmer as H. Sobel.
I literally never understood what the British solider with the Luger ("You're having a bath") meant until now... lol thank you for explaining it!
Hahaha! Glad I could help!
Pesky rhyming slang.
THE PACIFIC REACTION PLEASE.
YES - Donnie Wahlberg!! I cut out a lot of moments where I was like 'argh I recognise him but I can't remember what from!'
Oh crap - I just realised Johnny (Dexter Fletcher) is the same guy that directed Eddie The Eagle. So cool.
Then look up New Kids on the Block, and see Mr Wahlberg in a boy band :)
@@dene39 no. Just no.
@@JulietteReacts I first saw him on Have I Got News For You (started watching that 12 years ago) before I ever saw this series. He's funny too.
Those men, And the Goodness of Humanity had been united under a single banner to destroy the darkness in Europe.
Well, when people have forgotten Friends they will remember David Schwimmer playing Herbert Sobel. An outstanding performance.
As mentioned below. Even though every man hated Sobel, they all admitted that he is what made them into the Elite, though and hardened men.
This is the first time I have ever seen anyone react to this show, it is considered the number 1 HBO show of all time right there with The Sopranos and Game Of Thrones, also there are more explosions than the movie Saving Private Ryan.
Lots of people do, but yeah, great show.
(game of thrones and red wedding kind of made reaction shit popular lol)
Your face when you realized they were talking about D Day was priceless!
I started with your E02, was super impressed, and had to come back here to start at the beginning. Now skipping to E03 and *Subbed.*
Love your take on this miniseries.
It was shot entirely in England.
Dread and courage are eternal brothers. One does not come without the other. The crucible is which one wins.
Thanks so much... I look forward to it!!!
It's funny how people recognise the actors from other things. I always recognise them in other things as "Hey that's the guy from Band of Brothers"
Finally somebody is reacting to this amazing show! Can't wait for the rest.
4:54 Instant Sub! I have never seen someone realize without being told by someone else that Simon Pegg had a small part in BOB...He has two actual speaking lines too, his American accent is just good enough that most people would never even realize without you pointing it out.
Recognising actors is my main skill in life, ha!
Incredible reaction to such a great series. The realism of the actors and the shots pull you into this. I grew up watching the 'world war II" movies and this is easily one of my favorites.
Seeing how many actors you recognized it was probably a good thing you didn't do the drinking game suggestion.. o.O
That's what I try to do in all my videos -
though it's only HBO that have explicitly said 10 minutes is fine .
Aaand that was probably more detail than you needed. ;)
I'm glad you mentioned subtitled or dubbed!! That was something I was intending to ask in the comments. Personally, I would always, always go with subtitles but I am wondering if dubbed would be more understandable for viewers (instead of straining to read the subs in the tiny box!)
Glad to see your username again too!
OMG I can't believe I found someone who reacted to my favorite show ever!
It's really good to see you back. Hope you are feeling good now.
Thankyou, I really appreciate it. ❤️
Your description of the types of people depicted really interests me and is something I can see in the show already. 😉
One of my favourite stories from the Blitz is from a photograph of a shop front which had been half exploded away.
Great reaction, first time iv seen one for this show. I dont think iv ever seen a better series than this.
Can't stop looking at That pic to her left?! Major Winters.. Should I salute?
David Schwimmer who plays snowball looks just like the actual person
It was Sobels job to break them down and build them back up.
Jesus i remember watching this exactly 3 years ago
I love the shows I’m watching it again with you LOL forgot to say cool that you say all the actors you know at the very beginning.
I love how rich was the first you recognised, i love him sm ngl
The reason instructors are hard on you in basic is because as a soldier if you can't do the little things right how are you expected to do the big things right.
Watched a few of these randomly and going back to the beginning because you're kind of adorable.
Welcome back, sorely missed since GoT. Great reaction and beautiful as always
Thank you so much for doing this series.
i would love to see your reactions to the pacific, and watching band of brothers makes you appreciate the sacrifice they did for us during the war
Best tv series ever made
I guess you know by now that the whole thing was filmed in England. I like the way you react and will subscribe
Thanks so much - it really means a lot to me! And it's nice to see your username again!
The planes used were real planes from the era but there were only 3 useable at the time and so used some digital copy & pasting to fill the sky with them.
At 6:00, it's ment to do both actually. Its both ment to humiliate Winters and trick the company.
Why do you think they call your grandfather part of "The Greatest Generation".
I am delighted to find this series. So few people have reacted to this, that I am definitely subscribing. I hope you react to "The Pacific" as well. It's basically the sister show to this series, but it's in the Pacific Theater against Japan, instead of Atlantic against Germany.
Chris Bowman I actually just posted episode 4 of The Pacific. ;)
Welcome!
Chris Bowman I'm definitely discovering that! I have minimal knowledge about the Pacific theatre so it's already seeming disturbing as hell.
Thanks for joining me! Hope you like The Pacific cause I'm doing that next. ;)
"I'm gonna have to watch it, aren't I?"
Oh yes.
React to the Expanse!!!
You won’t regret it :)
I liked this react video, great job! You’re a beautiful person I like the way your mind works.
Thanks!
I'm tellen you, he's right there!
Keep on keepin’ on girl! Knock off that final project! Good luck!!!
He is actually very funny on Friends! 😁
I know Schwimmer from The People vs OJ and his character is ALOT more likeable
Power mad best description.
I'll just link you to the first episode of the GOT Rewatch Analysis. ua-cam.com/video/_CvFrTyvLdU/v-deo.html
About The Orville, I come to this show as a Macfarlane fan, not as a Trek fan.
You should see the amount of times I've spammed channels asking them to react to Luther or Broadchurch. ;)
I haven't seen any of the Star Trek TV shows so maybe that's why I'm taking to Discovery more than others!
Feel better love 🍻 from 🇺🇸
Interestingly, many of the actors (including Damian Lewis) are Brits and their American accents are seamless.
How come you know all of them by name except David Schwimmer? When I watched it I didnt know anybody except him.
Haha, I just couldn't recall it at that moment. Also I dislike Friends! Most of the others are Brits/Irish too! :)
Have you ever reacted to Don Malarkey’s interview?
It's harder to get on the plane than they made it look...
be graceful for your grandpa generation.
Positive thoughts on video. I liked your face. Your reactions were pretty much the same as mine. It was overall a good video. You got yourself a new subscriber.
Welcome! Thanks for subbing.
Great job as always! Fun fact, on the note about Coca Cola... some have argued the company was as troop friendly as it was in part to avoid the sugar rationing it otherwise would have been subject to, and to stay ahead of the competition.

(As usual it's more complex than that, but it's a cool historical note to me anyway)
Damn, need to watch this before HBO takes it down!
I'm hoping I should get away with it. There's an agreement between HBO and YT reactors that 10 minutes of footage is acceptable. I always use less than that. 😉
I would like to suggest Harper's Island
Ooh that's quite a niche suggestion. Why choose that? You a big fan? It aired on UK TV ages ago and I did watch a couple of episodes but I barely remember (only because it was so long ago!) I remember it being scary!
Juliette Reacts I love that show I'm rewatching it with a friend for their first time and making sure not to spoil it's a great murder mystery
Juliette Reacts also I just caught up with your BoB reactions marathoned the whole thing, they're amazing😇
The Pacific - it the marines during the island clearing campaigns of ww2
I've watched and reacted to all of The Pacific. 😉
Wohoo, finally someone with a BoB reaction video :-)
Do Breaking Point! Great episode! And after Band of Brothers do Pacific.
Glad you skipped the drinking game idea, definitely a show that deserves everyone's full attention
can you do the strain?
Sobel's post-war life was really sad. He eventually committed suicide in 1999, and not a single member of Easy Company came to the funeral.
Come back, Juliette! :D
Hello, hope youre feeling better. Band of Brothers isnt such a good series to watch when depressed 😅 or i guess it could be, to see how bad life could be. Just discovered your channel, but if you like this the pacific is good as well
I've actually reacted to all of The Pacific. 😉
@@JulietteReacts i see that now! thanks :)
love this show,,,if anyone likes reading check out beyond band of brothes by captain dick winters....great read
Watch "Lonesome Dove".
Hey! How are you doing?
Appreciate you asking. Honestly not great at the moment but hoping to get a video up soon.
The real Sobel (the guy that David Schwimmer is playing) wasn't this bad in real life, as far as I know. They made him into this tool for entertainment purposes. Otherwise this is a great series, but I kind of feel bad for this guy. He actually got much more respect IRL as far as I know.
According to Malarkey's book, the real Sobel was worse.
I enjoy your reactions very much!! You're very pretty, btw! ;-) Take care!
Please react to "The Handmaid's Tale"! It's only 10 episodes and there are no reactions of it in youtube at the moment.
What do you study?
I have a degree in English Literature and Film Studies and a Master’s in Computer Science. I’m a software engineer now.
@@JulietteReacts wooow :D that's cool my brother into computers too :) I wish I could study acting or whatever but dont know where to in norway :/ btw could you do me a favor do a reaction to movie Max Manus or the 12th man ... I'm sure they both on netflix
Please react to episode 2!
I would have taken one for him if I had to 🙈
You miss the point of Capt Sobel, and trainers in general. Its his JOB to be mean and push hard.
Simon Barabash I'm a Kubrick fan but have never got around to Full Metal Jacket. I'll have to check it out.
Attack on Titan.... they couldn't have picked a more depressing Anime.
