In this video we repair and restore a retro Casio SA-21 Keyboard as a charity giveaway, but it doesn’t go quite to plan. Can you spot the mistake before we spotted it?
If you would like to see somebody who can really play show you what this keyboard can do, checkout this video (I have no affiliation its just a video I found while researching his keyboard)

I respect those old Casios. So much class and character.
Glad you could save this one from the bin.
I agree. Nice thing. It's my most viewed video by a long way. Thanks for your comments
I also have the same one, my dad bought me this on my birthday in 2002as far as i can remember but he's no more!
And I wanna fix it no matter what, since it was my first musical instrument, it's my favorite!
Oh Antara I am so sorry for the loss of your dad. I lost mine 10 years ago and I miss him every day. I hope you get your keyboard repaired. Thank you so much for your heartfelt messages ❤️ ♥️
It's fascinating how many comments from other nations this video has attracted! Nice repair, thanks for uploading (a UK fan 😁)
This is actually my most watched video by a good margin. Seems to be very popular in India where many views come from. Nice to have some international reach. I often get enquires how much it would be to ship the keyboard to India. Thanks again
@@RetroTechRepair This is one of the very popular musical instrument for the Indian kids in the late 90s and early 2000 almost all of my friends have it along with me. No doubt its worth watching n gives a nostalgic vibe.
@@animeshtirkey933 Thanks, it's my most popular video by a mile! Thanks so much for explaining why. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video thanks so much for explaining and for your comments.
I knew straight away it'd be the negative tip. All Casio's are negative tip. Love your videos so nice to see these cool things repaired! 😊👍 Funny how they always have a b c stuck on them..
Thanks.... yeah rookie mistake on my part oddly though this is my most viewed vid by a mile! Thanks for your comments hope you enjoy the channel.
Very nice RTR. ;) I think we have all done that at one point!. It might be useful to detail how to retrofit a polarity protection diode, as not all keyboards/devices have this and it really is a device saver. FYI, if you like these sounds and want something with more range, there are 4 octave versions of this keyboard available. Although not as common as the SA series, look out for casio MA-101 and 201 on ebay, they do occasionally pop up for sale. ;)
Hi Chris, thanks for your detailed comments that's a good suggestion, I hope to do a few more keyboards soon. I don't play so I'm always concerned the keyboard repairs are a bit "light" as I just jab at buttons once I have fixed them. If I find one without a protection diode I will definitely do a mod video. Great idea. Nice feedback on alternative models too, I bet they use the exact same IC. Thanks again for feedback. Hope you enjoy the content
@@RetroTechRepair Yes same silicon chip inside, but many different IC packages. Have a lot of service manuals and have done some research as wanted to increase number of keys on a number of models, but its not possible on most. What Casio and Yamaha appeared to do (way back) is produce the same IC on same die, but package differently for different models, that is connect different pins to the silicon to the outer pins on the plastic package. Its cheaper to fabricate a single fully functional IC then do a different package run, it means that only certain features are available and there are limited easter eggs available. Some, but not the full potential of the silicon. Hope thats not too geeky! ;)
... Deductive reasoning. Going by service manuals, the SA series has half a dozen (or more) versions of same IC, same number, but with 'versions' e.g. -16, -08 at the end. They all have same sounds, but slightly varying pin-outs and in some case reduced pin numbers (cheapest ones). Bet its exactly the same silicone inside as silicon design & fabrication is the expensive bit. I guess the best potential for easter eggs would come from the most functional models with most number of pins.
Buen video, me sirvio mucho nueva suscriptora saludos!
Thanks!
Vehicles over here tonight
That's nice.
Sound 62: "Wah voice" was used in Sicko Mode
Cool!
Another great video, another fix :-) have you ever tried wd40 or gt85 for removing sticky labels and glue etc, works great, just have to leave it to soak in for a while.
Great tip. Thanks. I haven't tried GT65 but did try WD40 and it worked a treat. Thanks 👍
Thanks for the flowers. :D Nice work on this one!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Sir eska addpter wala circuit me Jo ic LGA hai ..uska number btaye. Na
Sorry I can't help
I cannot thank you enough , it turned out i was using the wrong polarity
Great! Happened to me too. The polarity Casio chose for their keyboards seems far less common than the other way around.
RetroTechRepair exactlyy , also really appreciate you doing such a thing , wholesome!!!
I may sound stupid but what's "polarity" in keyboards?
hey can you help me with that amplifier circuit on the keyboard based on an8053n circuit!! I lost that circuit while repairing my sa-21.Just provide me the circuit diagram of that amplifier.
Hi Charles thanks for watching the video. This was a simple repair and I didn't need the circuit diagram so I don't have it. But I typed Casio SA-21 schematic into google and it identified several free sources. Sorry I can't be more help
Super
thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed the video
Sir can you tell me a repair shop of this key
Hi! Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately I do not know of a repair shop. Sorry
Thanks to My Mate Vince for sending me over. Time for a Cuppa now, cheers.
Great to have you along Dave 👍 and another huge thanks to MMV.
I have an SA-20 and I can turn it on, the keys work but it only makes piano sound and none of the selector buttons work. Could You please point me in the right direction what to check?
I'm no expert I think I'd check for electrical continuity between the button contacts and connection to the processor on case their has been battery leak damage. I'd also clean the button contacts on the board and carbon pads on the back of the buttons I case it's had something spilled on it or they have oxidised. Like I say I'm not an expert so this isn't advice it's just what I would do. Cheers
@@RetroTechRepair Thanks a lot for the answer, I'll try! :)
