For ILS approaches Final Approach Segment starts when stablished in LOC and GS and that point is called Final Approach Point (FAP) instead of Final Approach Fix (FIX). It is a Point and not a Fix because it position varies due to weather conditions even if it is intercepted always at the same indicated altitude
Great videos as always. Could you please help me with this chart, the ILS O CAT II RWY 09L (SBGR) has the maltese cross, but it's not a LOC procedure. I'm from Brazil. Thank You.
Hi captain, Can you explain why on the 2 VOR approach charts (at 2:12), there is a Decision Altitude ? I thought a DA was only given for Precision Approaches, whereas VOR approches are Non Precision Approaches (there should be a MDA instead...?) thank you for your answer !
Thank you Gabriel and so much appreciated for these videos. Please keep up the good work and for making this valuable resources available to everyone as well! Have a good one pal!!!
A precision approach's final approach fix is defined by the charting authority; how it is symbolised is shown in the charts' Legend. Does ICAO define or depict the FAF for precision approaches? In the US the FAA says "It is designated.....by the.....lightning bolt symbol, designated the PFAF, for precision approaches....." Jeppesen says about the same thing--depicting it with the upper end of the pennant.
Hey, I hope you are doing well!! I'm happy to see the video helped you!! When to perform the landing checklist depends on the Airplane type and Company procedure. However You as a pilot decide when to accomplish the Landing checklist. The advise I can give to you is, try not to overload yourself, if the faf is in short final try to accomplish the landing checklist before. Otherwise do the checklist after. It really depends on the faf location and on your discretion! I hope my answer helped you!! Don't hesitate to ask me any question you might have when watching the videos!! I wish you a great day! Please, let me know about the Shadow Area, either left or right side of the approach to a runway. Why this Shadow Area/Black Area is there on the left or right side of an approach center line
Thank you captain! I'm a new guy of instrument flying. And I'm just confused about presicion approach (ILS…) and approach with vertical guidance (LPV…) . We use DA for these approaches, so is that the same principle to decide where to decent on the final approach phase?
Hey, I hope you are doing great! Many thanks for watching the video. The Final Approach Phase of a LPV approach starts at the Final Approach Fix, so it is important to identify where is it located. In the case of the ILS approach, you have a platform altitude that ends when you intercept the Glide Slope. Let me know if I answered your question... Have a great day Gabriele
Captain There is FAF and we have also FAP CAN YOU explain the deference between them Cz i thinked that precision approach have FAP and non_precision approach have FAF Thanks
Yes, the FAF is the point on a Non precision Approach where the final descend starts and, the FAP is the point along the LOC of an ILS (or precision Approach) that identifies the commencement of the final approach segment.
Hey, thanks for watching. The ILS approach is a precision approach and doesn't have a FAF, the FAF you see on the ILS charts are applicable to the Localizsr Procedure, which is on the same chart. Let me know if I have answered your question. Have a great day Gabriele
Thats not fully true: take a look at airport Parma in Italy LIMP jeppesen procedure, you can find an ILS 20 (ILS procedure ONLY) with the “cross” FAF anyway on the chart

Hey, thanks for watching.
The ILS approach is a precision approach and doesn't have a FAF, the FAF you see on the ILS charts are applicable to the Localizsr Procedure, which is on the same chart.

how can i identify a FAF IF an approach chart doesn’t specify? is there any formula? example VOR approach

Hi I am from china ,if you find any airport chart of China , all the ILS APPROACH charts are having the FAF symbol.it’s different.
Nice to see you are watching from China, I'm not familiar with the ILS chart in China
