I've just discovered this channel and it's the most wholesome channel I've seen for a long time. Watching you train enthusiasts all afternoon has given me a warm feeling
From an avid watcher across the pond, these videos continue to be a personal love. I'm always so much more interested in the little places, the "forgotten" places (must be careful there, not forgotten in a bad way). Keep up the excellent work!
Had to stop playback halfway thru and say your unbridled geekiness at the sight of the old waiting hall made me smile from ear to ear. How wonderful you guys are getting to do this!
I noticed the QikPack jacket, Geoff! If you're ever in need of another, feel free to stop off at Beverley Station (East Riding of Yorkshire) and pop to Trespass, we will sort you out with a brand new one!
For the record, *never* have a ten minute changeover at Leeds. That place is the largest outside London (17 platforms)! Also: are you sure Hensall has less people than Snaith? Snaith certainly has less trains.
Snaith is in Humberside. The last time I check the passenger count it was over 2,000. Image what it might be with a more frequent service; say every two hours with a couple working through to Hull! 😃😃😃
That at York is common for services coming of '4' and a late running going into platform '3' - a curse of the rationalisation of York back in the day. AT Hensall the 'local door operation' is only done for 3 car units - 2 car units all doors released. There are service plans in the future - at some stage to increase the Leeds-Goole service away from just the peak workers services, so as to avoid the ride either to Doncaster or Hull to get to Goole! Hope you enjoyed the ride on the far superior Class 144 pacer - and the line reference 'Pontefract Line' - in fact, all West Yorkshire line references are no longer used - having all been dropped in December 2016.
You're welcome...let us know when you're back up here for the All Stations Challenge - we've another quirky line in these parts and that's the one between Moorthorpe and Church Fenton - calling at Pontefract Baghill - Pontefract's forgotten station - and Sherburn-in-Elmet
This video is a good example of how so much of the UK railway system is living museum of bygone days. For example, York Station has "NER" displayed in the brackets that help hold up the roof. Forever they will be until the curved York Station comes down. Now you spotted a sign from the L&Y and a Victoria Regina postbox!
I went to York as part of an England trip (from Florida) in August 2018 and so the station is familiar. The Railway Museum wasn’t in my plans but I stayed an extra day partly to see it.
0:49 I’d just like to say thanks to Virgin for always have a nice person in the ticket booth. I’ve always gotten good service from helpful people at a Virgin.
6:37 I started recalling the smell immediately as you talked about it. It's a lovely smell, that - to me anyway - is very welcoming and comfortable. Edit: Lovely sunset too :-)
The miniature railway at the national railway museum goes all the way from the main building at the NWM to the main tracks entering the current York station and it is very interesting to see your small gage tracks almost line up with the proper main line tracks!
My mom is from the UK and as a kid I loved spending long periods travelling to the UK to visit my grandparents and I miss it so much. These videos, and all like this, remind me of my childhood (thou I'm still in my 20s) and I love your London vids but some good places are the fens in East Anglia. Some parts with railway stations are just awesome (for the ones still around), so just a thought if you guys needed suggestions for places :)
I think you should have talked more on camera to train guard / employee and the nice man Bob. I think if you put out an appeal, i think you would find plenty of people who would be willing to put you up for the night (afterall you would make great company) and the saved money could be spent on some epic drone shots etc! :D
There is a small mail box in the wall of the Glenfinnan station, track side. Didn't see which royal's insignias there were on, looked quite rustic, had a hard time squeezing my postcards in (they were a little bit larger than average).
Had a similar interaction with an old gent on my cycle ride yesterday, he just wanted to talk bikes and weather! I suspect that'll be me in 30 years time!
I did that pub thing once, making odd bus rail connections...Buy a pint, use the toilet...make it to another pub, use the toilet, buy another pint.......
Snaith on the same line I always thought was the least used station in Yorkshire, so I'm happy to concede to your greater research.. Snaith might be the least used station in the 'East Riding of Yorkshire'
can u do the least used station in WEST Yorkshire, this is probably Pontefract Baghill on the Dearne Valley Line (York - Sheffield). Love the channel Geoff. Keep up the amazing work.
There has been changes to least used stations: Least used in North Yorkshire isn't Hensall anymore, it's British steel Redcar Least used in East Riding of Yorkshire is Wressle, not Rawcliffe anymore. Least used in Tyne and Wear is now Manors, not Dunston anymore. Least used in Oxfordshire is finstock, not combe anymore. Least used in the whole of the UK is Barry Links with 24 passengers. not Shippea Hill anymore.
Google seems to come up with two different top ten lists for UK pub names. One does not contain "Railway". The CAMRA 2007 survey (Which I have seen quoted but not the original of) shows the Crown as #1, Red Lion as #2, Royal Oak as #3 and Railway as #6.
I stop at Hensall for my work just by the next level crossing quite frequently. I never seen the passengers trains go by. Just freight trains. Walked up to the village once to try and find a shop couldn’t find one. Then I went to the station to see if I could get a train to nearby bigger place just to find no trains.
Have you got stats for the 'least used' station in East Yorkshire? I was wondering about Arram on the Hull to Scarborough line. I think that a train only stops there at peak periods. Arram is a small hamlet close to the market town of Beverley. The booked stops would be intended for commuters. I just looked for the ORR least-used for 1017-18 and no surprise the winner is Redcar British Steel. Who the hell are the 40 listed users if that station now has no access to even the steelworks? Curious individuals like yourself?
I love your videos Geoff. I sit here in Indianapolis a city with no trains like the UK and hope to visit all these interesting places you take me to on UA-cam one day.
Oooh a Victorian postbox... I suspect that'll get ripped out of the wall sooner or later. Seem's there's quite a trade in olde post boxes. Several have been nicked from the area I work in. :(
came across this by pure chance and loved it love all the old lines and stations and I will try and remember that postbox website, have you done any on the summer volunteer railway lines like the wensleydale railway. thanks again
hi Geoff i know of a least used station in the north east called teesside airport (Durham Tess valley airport) which only has two trains a week only on a Sunday, 11:16 from darlington and 12:36 from eaglescliff
Not bad up here in Yorkshire is it Geoff and as for York Station you could spend all day on there exploring its history its where I spent most of my leisure time as a schoolboy trainspotting in the days of steam
You can find a list of Parliament trains on Wikipedia Geoff! great video. Also bad news, those 121s on the little Kimble route are being retired due to a lack of parts..
Slow-opening doors are a nightmare! RUN, Geoff, RUN! We've got a 'The Junction' pub near us in Upminster. Speaking of Upminster, if you do White Notley, I'd like to come (I'm quite close)... but I'd have to bring at least one of my parents with me! Yes, for once, the kid is the one into trains and the parents are dragged along - not the other way round! Haha
Jezza M just tell the parent you want to drag along that they'll be famous if they come along that might do it (btw I would have the same problem as you)
oh, and apparently as of 2017, Railway Tavern is 10th most common...Red Lion is first...there's a Railway Tavern on the Pontefract line somewhere though
I have one minute between the regular arrival of my commute train and the next train - and I usually make it - every day... If I don't make it, the other one is coming in 15 Minutes, but you clearly feel the time you won running from one to the other train.
Leeds is a big station and 10 minutes isn't enough if you can help it.In fact anywhere in England, unless you are connecting to a high frequency service like Merseyrail or London Overground, always give 30 minutes minimum!
Good video nice station. We're from NZ but we're in York last year. Had a good time in York & the Museum too 🚂 looking forward to all the stations. Although the the Kickstarter finished is there anyway to donate?
Sorry if this has already been said, but you passed Pontefract Monkhill, close to Pontefract Baghill, which was one of the least used stations in Britain (6th on 02-03 with 31 tickets sold to or from it says in Wikipedia) but at 6,148 for last year it probably isn't now, just the least used in West Yorkshire.
@@HenrysAdventures all Leeds to Goole trains (and one of the leeds to Knottingley trains) and vice versa (for both Goole/Knottingley), run via Castleford - the other leeds to Knottingley train route runs via Wakefield (and so goes past some of the interesting places Leeds has to offer - namely Elland Road football ground and the White Rose shopping centre)
Good God. You managed to get a seat on a TPE service from York. Well done. You are truly blessed.
Karl Florczak Ik !!!
Karl Florczak ikr, I came on a TPE service from Huddersfield and I almost got cramped into the luggage compartment next to the doors
I once managed that, granted it was at like 8:45 on a Thursday Evening after work if I remember the time correctly.
It's ridiculous that they only put 3 coaches on, but that is increasing to 5. If only they stopped at Guide Bridge, the bi modes could change power...
The station building is beautiful!
I've just discovered this channel and it's the most wholesome channel I've seen for a long time. Watching you train enthusiasts all afternoon has given me a warm feeling
The least used station in East Riding is only two stops down the line from Hensall so you'll have to catch the same train again :p
Northern pulled out all the stops for Michael Portilo by giving him a Sprinter
And now the Sprinters get ragged on for being the worst train
Love this episode: the cheerfulness, the simple folk and the impromptu actions.
(I need to do something similar in Sweden...... really).
My favourite LYS video yet guys! Really enjoyable. Not surprised the Yorkshireman gave you his number. Us Northerners are very friendly tha knows! 😊
From an avid watcher across the pond, these videos continue to be a personal love. I'm always so much more interested in the little places, the "forgotten" places (must be careful there, not forgotten in a bad way). Keep up the excellent work!
I did not think I would like your videos when one popped up on my feed, but I love them.
Strange to see you visiting the stations where I used to live - I'm looking forward to All the stations!
It's nice to see people enjoying themselves!
Geoff, Holton Heath in dorset is a likely candidate for a least used station. Enjoyed your latest video. Keep them coming.
Had to stop playback halfway thru and say your unbridled geekiness at the sight of the old waiting hall made me smile from ear to ear. How wonderful you guys are getting to do this!
I made a rule with myself. I must have a cup of tea with me when i watch these.
I tend to allow myself to have 800ml mugs of tea usually. I swear it's in my blood stream by now, haha.
I thought I saw you!! And here I am in your video. :-)
Jan - and now I'm searching all the way through trying to find you (as long as that's you in your profile pic!)
Jan where
1:50 I literally went past you and thought "Geoff?"
Jan thats nice
Jan from your profile pic I think I can see you :)
One amazing sunset. And a really good video too. Superb.
been on this train to get from glass Houghton to goole was like a ghost train 3 people on it great video as always geoff!
Ive been past this station many times on my way through to Gowdal in years past, and been in that pub a few times too. Love this vid!
I love it you guys kept smiling, even there was a very limited time window to make the connection and the first train was delayed 😊😊
Having had to run across Leeds station to make tight connections due to late trains from York many a time, I felt your pain.
Love these videos! I especially love seeing the bits of community around the station.
I noticed the QikPack jacket, Geoff! If you're ever in need of another, feel free to stop off at Beverley Station (East Riding of Yorkshire) and pop to Trespass, we will sort you out with a brand new one!
8:45 The Red Lion, The Royal Oak, The Crown, The White Hart, The Plough... are apparently the most popular pub names.
Another thoroughly entertaining five minutes.

Humberside was scrapped in 1996!
Snaith has the same trains as Hensall.

@ 8:50 Hiya - If my memory serves me Correctly - In Buxton, Derbyshire - there is a Pub called The Railway or some thing like that!!!
Going to England tomorrow, already excited. Maybe I'll get a glimpse of Geoff :P

Inflation
You should make a video on most least used train station in West Yorkshire
I'd just gotten off that TPE train! Cannot believe I missed you!
and I was one of the passengers this year! Two trains a day out of Snaith, my little home town.
According to a website I found online, 40 shillings in 1884, at modern day value would be £768!

Hehe, I live in lovely Hensall. I've never actually got the Hensall train though. I'll have to take a trip and bump the numbers up ❤
I grew up in Brayton near Selby, went on many a school trip to Eggborough Power Station and never even knew Hensall existed.
