Alan Wilder did most of the musical arrangements in the studio. Martin may have written the songs, but he would play them back on his guitar. Alan would be in the studio putting the music together. I always felt like he never got enough credit when he was with the group.
Not exactly true , Martin's demos were pretty much always synth based and were arranged to a point , just usually way more basic than Alan's arrangement .
That really isn't true. Alan has received more than enough credit for his contribution to the band. He quit due to emotional exhaustion from touring non-stop over a period of 6+ years. The Devotional tour was the biggest one the band had ever done and it was the last straw for Wilder, after which he'd decided that he'd had enough. Him and the rest of the band have always been on very good terms and still are. Please, don't create controversy, where there isn't one. Peace.
He never claimed to be a musician did he ? He plays bits and pieces despite the perception he doesn't . He's martin gores rock and depeche aren't depeche without him .
What I wouldn’t do to have Fletch’s job. A multimillionaire musician in a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band and all I needed to do is play a single note or trigger a sample at the right time. No matter what FLETCH WON IN LIFE!
@@abbyboyone yeah exactly…. died 3 weeks after a bicycle accident from an undiagnosed aortic dissection while Martin and Dave are still chugging along.
His timing was perfect. Metronomic, even. That's the result of becoming an expert in only playing a single key (C3). People who play more keys can never be as good at playing this one key. Fletch was a purebred specialist musician!
Ok..you may not believe this, but in 1984 during the SGR tour, Fletch played the piano part to Somebody all alone while Martin sang. I saw this with my own eyes. It’s been all “downhill” since then...lol.
Which city this happened? I could believe you, because in Exotic tour Fletch was playing string parts in One caress, when Martin sang and Alan played piano. You can see it on Johannesburg video.
I saw DM on this tour as well and you are correct. Also if you find the recording here on youtube or on the dmlive wiki you can easily hear that it isn't Alan playing. Not that Fletch plays it badly but he does not have the same sense of timing. Still not as bad as when Gordeno plays it though, that lounge lizard just make me cringe.
According to Andy McCluskey (OMD) when they toured with DM for Masses they made fun of Fletch because they found out his keyboard wasn't even plugged in while performing. Looks like by Devotional they were willing to give Fletch one key to play. LOL
From a more recent (this century) tour, the technical director showed the effects (reverb) boxes for the vocalists, and there was one for Dave, one for Martin, and one for Peter. That was it, even though Fletch had a microphone mounted at his rig. Who knows whether his MIDI controller was plugged in, either. 🤷♂ His mic sure wasn't! Sometimes he didn't even have a mic, although he usually did. I don't recall having ever seen him deliberately singing into it anyway, but the fact that there wasn't a processor for reverb for him on that tour while everyone else (except for Christian) got one is telling. The technical director just glossed over the fact--probably didn't give it a thought, although he must have known that a mic had been set up for Fletch onstage. Rest in peace, Fletch, I will seriously miss your personality and humor 😢, but in all honesty not your singing or, for the most part, your playing.😏
He always did give the finger to musicianship. Over the decades, I guess he never had enough time to learn to play with all of that rock star money to spend.
I still can't identify exactly what sound Fletcher was playing in this song. Now, I don't know if after Wilder he acquired a little more prominence in Policy of Truth, because at the Milan concert in 2006 we see him using a pair of headphones when he played it.
Esa es una de las razones por las cuales se fue Wilder... porque Fletch ganaban lo mismo, ademas le dio depresión a la mitad de la gira y solo utilizando un dedo. Que triste 😞
Going into this I assumed Alan’s was as something similar to this, and I knew Martin’s part. I know Fletch usually didn’t play much and had mostly background drones (that would be very noticeable if he messed up the timing to his credit) but seeing just the one finger was pretty funny to me each time lol
@@TheEmpyrean15 Not for a while. Nowadays, the background music is either a digital multitrack recording played through a DAW and/or sequenced with virtual (software) instruments generating the sounds live. They stopped using the tape machine a long time ago. That said, it's the same idea, just using digital technology. Some argue that sequencing and generating the sounds live makes a difference, although either way, it's still automatic, with no humans playing this stuff live.
This video is in no way a precise testament to neither the way the parts where split between band members or between them and the backing tape. Plenty of soundboard recordings and videos can demonstrate that.
You can clearly see that Fletch hits something in 0:48 and you didn't play anything then. So I don't think that Fletch plays only this one note you've shown here.
Fletch was *not* a musician who wasn't allowed to showcase his talent and skills for some strange reason, if that's what you're asking. He could barely play at all, which was why he barely played at all. And he wasn't a composer or songwriter, either. In fact, for that matter, he had little to no interest in music at all.
Nice cover but the real member parts are Martin: The lead sinth, The guitar riff-like sound of the chorus, organ, sax, and slipping guitar accompanying synth lead. Alan: opening guitar sequence, guitar stabs in the organ part and the piano hits. Fletch :The shrill fade-in sound that accompanies the organ, the string sound that plays below the synth leads, and the soun bass In The interlude that sounds like a "brummmm"
Petr Bartoš He does. This video is bullshit made to entertain idiots who repeat the same misconception bout Fletch without having any first hand knowledge of how DP actually plays live.
I wonder if he has to operate & supervise the playback of the pre-recorded parts. Perhaps he may have some responsibilities if Alan or Martin's keyboard stops working
@@derekbaker3279 Fletch never did anything musical with the band, except to play in a very limited sense, as illustrated here. He had no musical talent, practically no skills, and nearly zero interest in music at all. He played a bass guitar for Vince Clarke originally just to be sociable, and ended up as a founding member of Depeche Mode as a result. Early on, he did handle the finances for the band, since he was good with numbers and found that work interesting and enjoyable, but later they had actual accountants take care of that. Fletch didn't take care of anything technical, either. In the super-early days, before Mute, it was Dave who operated Vince's DR-55 drum machine, since Vince, Martin, and Fletch were all busy changing the sounds on their synths between songs, as those old things had no patch memory. And if a keyboard were to stop working in later days, then they all had a backup right there in front of them. If it weren't for the backups, then each rig would have consisted of a single keyboard (just like the super-early days). Depeche Mode aren't exactly a massive-keyboard-rig kind of a band--more like a minimalist kind of a band. Even Peter Gordeno usually doesn't have more than one synth to go with his Roland stage piano. If the synth were to fail, then the stage piano could control a rack-mounted or virtual synth backstage, and if the piano were to fail, then Peter could probably get by with playing piano sounds on the synth keyboard. Any technical help the band might need would be taken care of by the technical director or other technicians backstage.
Good thing Fletch carried his weight on this one otherwise the song would fall apart.

How is Fletch able to play that key and clap at the same time??? amazing!
Maybe something like moog taurus :p
Clapping in heaven now - RIP.
Maybe he didn't play that all-important key with his finger. Is it still too soon? 😉
So this is why Fletch was always clapping his hands when the cameras were on him during concerts. The joy of samples.
Excuse me, it's called percussion, OK? Some people just have no appreciation for music or musical talent. 😉

Den Martos that’s why he left when he did. He felt he wasn’t recognized, and compensated for the amount of work he put in.
