  • After a hectic evening of gallery hopping and art viewing James Kalm happens on an opening of new paintings by Pop Art icon Jim Dine. Dine's new works are a distinct departure form his previous imagistic works where he based his compositions of a frontal view of a heart or bathrobe. Along with a plunge in to pure Abstract Expressionism, Dine adds the element of sand to give these pieces the texture of a stucco wall or colored asphalt. Despite the nubby facture, the artist retains a delicate, and rich coloristic sensibility.

Whoa! $325,000!!? I thought you had to die to have your paintings sell for that much! So grateful for all the things I learn at these intimate gallery viewings, thanks to you James!

It is amazing that no matter how "well attended" the opening, it is fairly easy to navigate through all the attendees and look at the paintings . . . simply because no one else is paying attention to them.

A great improvement to his ' commercial ' hearts series. This is a much better line in my opinion.

The splashes of color set off by the neutral grays, browns, and blacks work for me.

These are beautiful. Contrary to your view that these are "pure Abstract Expressionism," (and Andrew Weis' comment that "Dine is absolutely lost without imagery,") it seems strikingly clear to me these paintings are depictions of (or inspired by) floral arrangements. These are the richest and most beautiful paintings of Dine's I've seen.

I know that this is an old post, but I am curious what meant by comment that one painting looked like it could have been painted outside; not sure what aspect of the work you were referring to. Interesting his use of sand in the work. Love the scale of these pieces. Amazing the number of people out for his show; he still got the pull. Thanks James and Kate. Chris

Wow. Dine is absolutely lost without imagery. This is one of those shows where an artist goes way out of his way to prove to the world what he can't do. In this case that would be nonobjective painting. Jim really needs those bathrobes and hearts, and there's nothing wrong with that.

hey JK, about 4:12 you mentioned he gets a great patina....'looks like they were painted outside'. Just curious what clues on the patina could make one think its been painted outdoors, thanks. Nice views of Dine's work, good job 🙂

Well, there's a soft sun bleaching that happens on the edges or lumps of paint, and a layer of fine dust, or perhaps a water stain from rain. The whole piece has lost it's "factory fresh" shine, and seems to have been aged and mellowed somehow...JK

I somewhat liked "A Child in Winter Sings." What's the point of the diptych line if you just paints over it? I use the line to separate slightly differing images.

I'm one of those Jim Dine fans, but I don't admire everything he does. I like his craftsmanship from back in the late 60s - early 70s and later on the plants. I especially like his robes and trees and gates. These paintings seem to be a take off of Al Held's work in Paris '52-'59. Although it relates to the previous work of his as well.

I appreciate art as an artist myself and i have to say 350 thousand dollars for that crap, is insane. Is his brand even worth that much cause that's what he's selling a brand. No skill what so ever.
