  • In this video, I share how I easily plan my color palette for a drawing using an iPad and creative software. Not only is it practical and saves time, but it's fun and allows us even further immersion into our creativity.
As a young designer, I used to plan a color palette by drawing thumbnails and swatching with markers or colored pencils. Now, with current technology, it's as easy as snapping a photo!
    In this video I use:
    • Apple iPad Pro
    • Apple Pencil
    • Procreate software
    • A. Gallo watercolor paints
    • Artist Loft Vienna Filbert brush #8
    • Grumbacher Goldenedge Round #5
    • 5x5 Travelogue Hand•Book Journal
I would enjoy discussing this topic further in the comments section below, so please leave your thoughts there.

Fantastic. I should do this more. I jump in too often and work from there.😅 This brings such freedom to the process. Love it. Thanks Mark.

Thank you so much, CharlesHancockCreations! I have SO many doodles and drawings sitting in sketchbooks, this method is getting them off the shelf and into a position where I can explore all kinds of new options, digitally. You're right in that it allows such freedom. Hoping all is well! ~ Mark

great use of ipad and procreate! Because watercolors are difficult to make changes, i'll upload a photo of my painting into procreate. This allows me to try value and color changes then go back to the paper version.

This is such a great idea! Even on a phone you can kinda do it with drawing programs like medibang.
For thumbnails and stuff its quick and efficent.

After using adobe products since the beginning of time I never thought I would like procreate as much as I do. I do agree there are features missing but overall it's really great.

Yeah, I'd use watercolors too. I could color my drawings in procreate, but actual watercolor is more fun ;-)

Remember that you can ask procreate to generate a color palette from a photo. I used this feature to create a palette that mirrors my watercolor palette. I took a picture of my swatch card and asked for that photo to be used for palette generation.

That's a really great point, ladyflimflam and I'm grateful you mentioned it. I tried to resist relying on the automated color palettes for a long time, but eventually, it became far easier (and more accurate) to leverage that option rather than try to pick my own. Thank you!

Hey Mark, thanks for sharing. I truly appreciate your advice, it's a great tip. I truly appreciate your hatching. How do you know where and how much to hatch when drawing?

I'm grateful for your time watching, Made by Dawn! Thank you. As for the hatching technique, I start with a very simple line drawing and then, my obsessive brain can't resist the urge to define areas using hatching details. I basically fill in areas of shadow - but not too heavily. Some pen and ink artists flood their work with crosshatching to the point where I think to myself, "okay... WAY too many lines!" There's a balance and I hope that after all these years, I have kind of figured it out. Of course, I often wish I could restrain myself a little better! lol! Stay well! ~ Mark

Could you use the colored digital drawing you created here in printed form (prints/cards/etc.)? Would the photographed line work (drawing) need to be digitally redrawn(traced) or would it be acceptable as you have created it for print? Learned something from watching your video. Thank you.

Thank you for watching and for reaching out, quenuk! I have printed hundreds of cards from the work that I've created digitally. In fact, one piece I did was resized (digitally) from 5x5 inches to 3x3 feet, printed on archival paper (kind of like a Gicleé painting), then framed and sold for $800. I was really impressed with how clean the quality was when I resized the piece, as it was done in an app (Sketchbook Ink) that works as vector and allows for unlimited resizing. As for the line work, you _can_ trace over it OR you can choose to make it a Multiply layer so it works with all the layers beneath it without needing to re-draw. I hope that all made sense! Cheers ~ Mark

Thanks for the tip on how to NOT have to redraw or trace the photographed line drawing by using a multiply layer. Using vector format certainly gives the ability to enlarge without losing quality as you mention. I was recently introduced to Adobe Fresco( free & paid versions) that has the choice of both vector brushes or raster brushes. I was introduced to Fresco by an illustrator named Chris Piascik on YT who shares many tutorials on using it. I use the vector brushes exclusively now enabling me to enlarge without losing quality as you do with Sketchbook Ink.I love sketching/drawing on paper and colouring digitally has become increasingly interesting to me. Your videos have inspired me to do just that. Thank you.Would you consider doing a video on how you compile & create your Inktober printed books? They are such a great way to keep & enjoy our works. Your videos and art are of great inspiration. Cheers.@@MDCampbell
