- This Shot Separates Pros From Club Players - OneShot
Being able to hit the ball straight off a crosscourt that has it the side wall is a very important skill. Advanced players and professionals seem to make it look so easy.
When the ball hits the side wall, it changes speed, sometimes changes spin and also rebounds at an angle. In general that angle is known, but sometimes the rebound is hard to predict.
That's why this shot can be difficult for club players to hit well.
You can see that it's very similar to a serve that hits the side wall, and we all know how awkward that can be. It's why many club players hit crosscourt service returns.
This shot is harder because, unlike a serve, you are not just standing there waiting for it.
Your timing has to be almost perfect when you aim to hit the shot straight. Even a small error in angle or timing and the ball could land short or worse, come right back at you.
I'll be creating a video in the near future to explain how to practice these shots and some tips to play them, but my objective with this video is to make you more aware of their importance.
In general, the sooner you can hit the ball after it has rebounded from the side wall, the better. That means any unexpected changes will have less time to cause you problems.
Keep YOUR swing short, controlled and think of it as more like a block than a proper swing.
Aim high to ensure the shot returns deep and WATCH THE BALL HIT YOUR STRINGS.
Having to volley the ball instead of letting it bounce adds to the difficulty of the shot, but letting the ball bounce only forces you closer to the back wall.
Take the proactive approach and develop the discipline of volleying when you can. Long term, this approach will bring more rewards that short term hesitancy and doubt.
The next time you watch advanced or pros play, look out for how they seem to effortlessly hit the ball straight off the side wall.

Thanks coach. Looking forward to a video on practicing these shots. Wondering how to practice in solo 🤔
I had to invent a new solo drill specifically for this, plus a couple of others that have the same basic skill requirements
Really great tip (as always)! Thank you!
Glad to hear you liked it.
Great insights, good video as always, thank you Philip!
You are most welcome, glad to hear you liked it.
Love you coach
Thanks, but don't tell my wife.
Great video again Philip, on a difficult shot, looking forward to the follow up video. Tip; your closing music could use a redo, it's a bit 'A-team' ish.
Glad you like it. It's a shame you don't like the outro music, but I suppose I could change it for something more modern. Hannibal would be sad.
@@BetterSquash I like the music!
Me too.
Good choice of focus. As soon as I identified which shot you were referring to I instantly remembered the difficulty I once had (and still do sometimes) with this shot
Yes, it's one of those shots that in the middle of a rally it can be hard to notice that it immediately puts you at a disadvantage.
