I've just been sorting out my skirts. I was going to install the caps like you did but we shouldn't because the silver trims have little locating pins on the back that sit in the recess where the caps go. If the caps are fitted the the silver trims won't sit flush with the skirt

I removed the caps when I fitted the trims
