There are two campgrounds in the Valle Vidal Unit. We are headed to McCrystal Campground. McCrystal Campground is at an elevation of 8,100 feet and has 60 campsites; 6 with corrals for horses. Sad how people take this beautiful country for granted and leave a mess. Thank you two for cleaning up after others. And also sharing your adventures. Be blessed

      Hello, nn, and thank you. Seeing the elk leg in camp was disconcerting because of all the bear alert stickers. We didn't see any bears though.

    Absolutely beautiful! Northern NM rivals the beauty of California's Sierra high country.

      Thank you, Jimmy. It is a pretty state. Some beautiful vistas and sunsets still to come. We were there the first week in September. The campgrounds closed a few days after we left.

    Love the Valle Vidal! That was our first campout as a family after we moved back to NM. Kids were little and there was a lot of hilarity. We stayed at Cimmaron. Either way you go, there is a lot of dirt road to get in there, but the way you guys went - that is ......a LOT of dirt! But the payoff is remote, awesome and wild. Love the vid! Keep it up. See you on the road..................................................AO

    I enjoy your videos! I have a Morris Mule trailer the same color as yours with a Big Foot tent on top. It’s a great deal of fun. You might be amazed at what this little trailer will do, I pull it behind my jeep down trails most jeepers would think twice about, It goes anywhere !

    Very nice! Thanks for being responsible campers. Are y'all planning any snow adventures this winter? I'm thinking about trying snow camping for the first time.

      @@wobblyotteroutdoors thanks. We are live in the Houston area, but travel to Minnesota to visit family. I tried last year for a snow adventures, but it didn't get above -4 the entire time we were there.

    Did you pack the firewood in, or cut onsite? I've never camped in New Mexico, so forgive the question. Interested in this area. Do you have any other tips?

    • @wobblyotteroutdoors
      @wobblyotteroutdoors  5 років тому

      It's a good question. We did not pack-in the firewood. Most times in a National Forest you can gather fallen logs for use in a campfire. It's a good idea to check the website, campground board, or with the campground host to be sure. We got all of the firewood we used from empty campsites. When we do pack-in firewood, we always purchase it or gather it (when allowed) from the local area. Wood can carry damaging bugs and disease and we don't want to spread them.
      As for tips... There is no potable water in McCrystal or Cimarron Campground, so be sure to have plenty with you. Because of the elevation and relatively dry air, it can be quite warm during the day and cold at night. Sun screen, hat, lightweight long sleeves to protect from the sun. Layers of clothing and covers for the nights are good. It is bear country so keep a clean camp area. According to the Forest Service website... In May and June, the West side of Valle Vidal is closed for Elk Calving. Here's a link to the page with that information (at the bottom of the page) www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/carson/alerts-notices
      Hope this helps and hope you have an opportunity to go. It is breathtaking.

    U folks are like me when it comes to other people's ignorance. I bring my bucket and pokey stick to clean up my site and the area around it. Its easy to not be ignorant and pick up after yourselves, also, teach your kids to do the same... Alot of what i pick up are juice box straws and water bottle caps. Always always leave your area better then u found it.

    Bummer. I have heard about this area for ages but no dispersed camping really sucks. No way I'm driving all that way just to pay to camp 20 feet away from other people. That campground looks pretty meh to me.
