In the world there are tenors, great tenors and tenors with exceptional abilities. Further on, there are - if there are any - the Deities of Opera. Mario Del Monaco was undoubtedly among the latter. Personally, I love the operas of Giacomo Puccini, but - I must say in all sincerity - only when the interpreter is the sublime Mario Del Monaco are my emotions, the intimate involvement of my soul unparalleled, in intensity and depth. As Mario Del Monaco knew how to give golden wings to a wonderful dream of love, no one has ever been able to do it again, nor will anyone ever be able to do it again, I suppose ...
This is in my opinion the greatest tenor of all times, though a dramatic tenor or "bari-tenore" which is a rare voice type in the Italian repertoire these days. Now find him in Turandot or Manon Lescaut, but above all in Verdi roles. He has set the standard for Otello for all times to come. PS: you only missed him because you are probably too young. I am almost 55 and never heard him, only heard about him. Keep listening!
Originally Puccini wrote two versions. One with high C, and another one without is. But I'we never heard the second one. If a tenor worried about high C, transposes down the whole aria half one one note lower.
This is a very strange video; it looks like the middle-aged MDM at home (probably with his lovely young wife) lip-synching to one of his early recordings. I get the feeling it's from a TV show. Any ideas? Any facts?
Well, I carefully looked at Mario's lips to see if every movement matched his voice and I did not catch him moving his mouth before nor after each word, so I believe he did not lip-synch at all in this vid.

Caruso sang high C very rare. But in the recording of Ciuis animam of Rossinis's Stabat mater he sang high D flat.

@@ioancoca6712 Thank you (your comment sent me to Wikipedia). She is now a "woman of mystery."
