I recently attempted to educate a Jehovah's Godbotherer who came to my front door about how preposterous most of the Bible is. One of my points was this: if Adam and Eve hadn't eaten from the tree of knowledge, if they didn't know the difference between right and wrong, how could they know that obeying God's command not to eat the fruit was the right thing to do? How could they have any means to judge whether ANY action was right or wrong? They would believe or not believe anything they were told, from any source, entirely at random? Without the knowledge or right and wrong, the snake was as much "an authority" as God was, and God, being omniscient would know that, and know they had eaten the fruit (and therefore not been surprised or betrayed when they did). The Fall must therefore have been preplanned. Couldn't an omnipotent being have devised a better plan? I know I could. His objection to every point I made however, was always the same, the total logical inconsistencies and outright impossibilities described "didn't matter", what was important was that the stories had to be believed, not that they had to be believable. I've never seen a more terrifying or disappointing case of willful ignorance

I think the reason I myself never got into religion was because of super heroes. I grew up watching heroes that could do what Jesus is said to do 10 times over, but was always told they were fictional stories of fictional people doing fictional things. So for me the Bible always felt like an ancient comic book that people believed to be real. Of course that doesn't mean I didn't learn a lot of good like long lessons from comics, just that i always knew they were fiction.

Genesis 2 opens with God looking around at His creation and seeing that it is good, but, dangit, there is still no man to till the soil. Why does the soil need tilling? Why is soil tilled? To plant crops, of course. Why are crops planted? To produce harvests, of course. Why are harvests produced? To feed populations, of course. What are populations composed of? People, of course. So if there are no people in the world, yet, then there are no populations yet, which means there is no need to till the soil.

I think the reason I myself never got into religion was because of super heroes. I grew up watching heroes that could do what Jesus is said to do 10 times over, but was always told they were fictional stories of fictional people doing fictional things.
So for me the Bible always felt like an ancient comic book that people believed to be real.
Of course that doesn't mean I didn't learn a lot of good like long lessons from comics, just that i always knew they were fiction.

Genesis 2 opens with God looking around at His creation and seeing that it is good, but, dangit, there is still no man to till the soil. Why does the soil need tilling?
Why is soil tilled? To plant crops, of course.
Why are crops planted? To produce harvests, of course.
Why are harvests produced? To feed populations, of course.
What are populations composed of? People, of course.
So if there are no people in the world, yet, then there are no populations yet, which means there is no need to till the soil.

I think we are much better off traveling light as we take the next step on this evolutionary journey of spirit and intellect. Just as Big Bird and the Teletubbies captured our attention as children and guided us on what would be a lifelong path of learning and discovery, so was Yahweh to our forebears, as they were forced to face the indignities of an unjust and violent world. The human condition is different now. Freedom is not just a concept. We live it, and it comes with its own set of challenges. Moving forward in this brave new reality necessitates letting go of things from the past that have become a burden, things that no longer serve us, things that hinder us from engaging life as the future unfolds.
This video is wickedly funny and profoundly cathartic. I felt a deep sense of rage at those who would force this puerile myth, cobbled together from any number of pre existing myths, onto an unsuspecting proletariat, that it would become a cultural norm that only the audacious would dare question. Things are different now with the internet. No network or studio executives to block its distribution because it would undoubtedly offend people's religious sentiments.
