@@syntaxlies82 I can see that being an issue in some places, very unlikely here. If we get winds that strong, I am more worried about shingles than the siding.
I'm planning to build a custom home with 1" of polyiso exterior insulation. Would I just use longer nails to attach to the OSB underneath? If I did strapping or rainscreen it would have to be horizontal to attach board and batten and I don't think horizontal rainscreen is recommended? Do you have any suggestions?
@@hsdesignstudio I'm putting up about 2k sf of vertical siding soon and your information was very helpful. I'll know to take my time putting up the trim
@@jl9678 the j channel is definitely the slowest part. Taking time to make the joints and corners line up nicely really brings it all together in the end. Good luck!
Looking to put up something similar on my cabin, I didn't quite see how you did the corners. Is there a special corner piece? Great video BTW, don't assume people are not interested 😉
Thank you! I did my corners a little differently, in that I used PVC trim instead of vinyl siding specific corners. You can see exactly how I did this in the previous episode here: ua-cam.com/video/4DZCn-TBllw/v-deo.html
I'm about to do a very similar install. I'd love to see how you transitioned the vertical board and batten and the horizontal siding. Any chance we can see it up close?
Hey Michael- I just used back to back J-channels of the various colours. They are running vertically, so I didn't see the need for a drip edge. Is your transition side to side or top to bottom?
Where is the critical info? Where did you start from? Did you use a starter strip? Why did you install a J channel adjacent to your corner mold when it has an inherent indent to start your first strip? How did you butt J channel corners? How would you seam vertical to horizontal vinyl?
Thanks for watching. It isn't meant to be a how-to video. It's part of our Garage series building a garage from start to finish. But to answer some of your questions: I used J-channel at the corners because in the last episode you would have seen that my corners aren't using vinyl siding corners, but instead a PVC trim (I prefer the aesthetics of this). As for starter strips, every manufacturer has slightly different instructions. Some suggest an actual purchased starter strip, others suggest just cutting off the 'groove' from a piece of siding and using that. I don't think there is an inherently wrong place to start an install. As long as you move in a continuous direction, the install should go smoothly. I discussed my transition from vertical to horizontal in another comment, but I just used side-by-side J-channels.
Wondering what your thoughts are on installing B&B horizontally? I'm redoing an 8x8 shed and bought left-over B&B (at a very good price) but it could leave me with a lot of waste pieces if I install it vertically. Any cons of going against the grain so to speak as I'm thinking of doing?
Would you need to install horizontal/diagonal strapping? How are you getting all those nails into studs? Are they all going just straight into the aspenite?
They are into 1/2" OSB. Siding screws are another option with more bite. However this garage is in a very sheltered location and high winds ripping the siding off are not a concern of mine.
I have this same color and siding. After just a couple weeks of being installed it has circles and wrapped in areas. Have you had this issue with this color?
@@hsdesignstudio Yes but some installers were having issues with vinyl board and batten with warping or oil canning even with proper installation supposedly.
At 5min32sec where you finished the back wall of the garage, was there a j-channel along the top of that siding? Is j-channel needed there before you can start the peak section of siding?
Yes- There is one on top of the bottom board and batten, then a drip ledge, then the bottom j channel for the peak area. I use j channel anytime the siding ends. It hides the unfinished end.
@@hsdesignstudio try flashing the lower channel with a drip cap then re-start the horizontal siding using a starter strip you need a small space to lock the siding up but even with drilling holes the j won't get full of crud. Nice job mixing the textures.
@@hsdesignstudio Thanks man! Nice. I"m trying to find information on the width of each piece? Certainteed has most colors in 7" and some colors in 8". Mastic doesn't say what their widths are on board and batten vinyl. I guess I'll call these places up and email them, etc. thanks!! Plus some board and batten vinyl looks a little cheesy imo but not yours.
@Todd K No worries at all 👍 I believe each piece had a 7" exposure, plus roughly 1 inch for the tongue and nailing strip. I've installed a fair amount of vinyl siding, and I was really satisfied with this one. I've even had a few people walking by ask if it was metal siding because it doesn't have the "cheaper look" some vinyl can have. Good luck!
That's a great question, and I guess time will tell. However, I think if it is installed correctly, allowing for the expansion and contraction of the siding, there shouldn't be any warping.
@@hsdesignstudio thanks for such a quick response. I was just curious because I looked into painting vinyl a dark color one time but they said the heat would cause issues. Maybe since yours comes from the factory that color it's different. Any ways looks great and hope to see updates! Good luck!
It is a decent black, but not dark dark black. Next to say a black downspout (aluminum), it looks more dark charcoal. Black is a tough color as lighting and other blacks can really change how it is perceived.
@@hsdesignstudio cool. I was leaning towards a certainteed that is similar but I think I’ll have to get a sample of each to compare. The internet sample of the one you did looks almost brown but obviously in your video it is blacked
It is not meant to be a tutorial on installation- there are plenty of 'how to's' already on UA-cam. This is part of a series following a garage build, and if people learn a thing or two along the way, then that's a bonus.
You might as well have had the camera across the street. Way too much of your presentation was too far away to be helpful to a DIYer trying to learn the process of installation. You need closeups. For instance cutting and fitting the J-channel. . All you did was say it was time consuming - show why. Also way too many wide shots of you on the ladder swinging a hammer. You’ve got to rethink your whole presentation style. My 2 cents!
It might be time to invest in a titanium hammer...that was A LOT of hand nailing 😂
Next time use siding screws. Better for high winds that can rip the roofing nails out
@@syntaxlies82 I can see that being an issue in some places, very unlikely here. If we get winds that strong, I am more worried about shingles than the siding.
Painting is why I'm here. Once vinyl is installed, you don't have to paint! Yay!
It does finish off an exterior rather quickly 👍
Where did you get the black siding? I can’t find it anywhere 🙃 I can’t find matching siding with J channel. Any help?

Thanks. I used a standard roofing nail, spaced roughly every 16".
The j Chanel has holes to let water out but it hits cmu block and makes it into foundation. How to prevent it from that
The j channel shouldn't sit on foundation. It should hang over the edge so any water drains outside the foundation.
