What is the real reason why cats disappeared on an island called Cat Island?

In this video, I went to Okishima in Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, which is famous for "Cat Island".
The purpose was to interact with many cats, but when we went there were almost none.
According to an islander, it was taken out by a non-resident a few years ago.
All the cats on this island are stray cats, so even if someone brought them back, there would be no legal problem, so it wasn't considered a problem.
I just pray that all the cats that were brought back are living healthy as protective cats.
I didn't meet any cats this time, but this island has a very long history and there are many things to see from the perspective of sightseeing, so I thought I'd like to go sightseeing again someday.
