What a disgrace this show is. It was so out of place there. Such a show can be performed only in a gay club. But even there not everyone would like the mockery of religion.
What shocked me most about the opening ceremony was the depiction of headless women. I know that the French have a right and a reason to be proud of their revolution but decapitating people has nothing to do with Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. What is worse is that it seemed to represent their queen, Marie Antoinette. The problem with that is that we know that she was not queen of France by choice; had very little say in the creation of the problems that led to the revolution and was the victim of a sham trial. I believe that we know: 1. That the verdict and the sentence was determined by politicians before her trial. 2. That her lawyer’s reasonable request for time to prepare was rejected. 3. That her charge sheet included an outrageous trumped up charge of the sexual molestation of her son. For seemingly no other reason, but to cause her more distress. Add to that Marie Antoinette suffered deliberate cruelty before her execution and was far from the glamorous depiction in the ceremony. I just think it is sad that a country care so little for a clear, cruel injustice that they celebrate what they should be a little embarrassed about.

Tolerance will better emerge if differences are not emphasized to the absolute limit. If the differences between the everyday man, woman and child and the freakier members of society are endlessly emphasized this is much more likely to result in revulsion. This is especially so when the aesthetic tends to be ugly, defiantly so, and 'in your face'.
I am not a Christian, never have been, and find all religions to be no better than rather ridiculous third rate science fiction, but I see why this was so offensive to Christians. Being within a state-sanctioned belief bubble they are prone to being sensitive at the best of times when challenged... but this was a very blatant and pretty ugly way to challenge them.
