For the most part, Waterbury is not hardcore ghetto, it's more of a tired old former industrial city that was unable to find a new economic niche after the factories closed. This led to an increasing percentage of residents being dependent on public assistance, higher tax burdens without much of a commercial tax base, and also means that there's no money to maintain its generally older housing stock. Until about a generation ago Waterbury was noteworthy for its strong ethnic communities. Italian most of all, but also Irish, French, Lithuanian, and Portuguese. Their presence did not necessarily provide direct economic benefits but provided a sense of belonging and neighborhood pride. With these communities having largely dissipated through assimilation and migration, though some vestiges remain here and there, there's not much neighborhood pride and that's led to further deterioration.
There's nothing great about Connecticut! It's no wonder why so many of it's residents move down South. I'm from VA and we have so many folks from CT and the Northeast period.
but Waterbury did find new economic growth.... they call it crack .. and heroin. also, you didn't get past willow, theres a lot more to Waterbury than the north end
Waterbury actually was a great blue collar town in the 60's and part of the 70's when I lived there. A corner bar town...where most everyone knew everyone. Then the brass mills moved out. That is where I found employment in those years...moving Scovill and Anaconda out..Sadly the city never recovered. And we knew it at the time...that it was bad.
I grew up in Waterbury in the 60's. My family went south in 1971 for job reasons. Our whole family lived all over the North End, mainly on or off Hill Street. However, that was already beginning to change by 1970. It was a great place to grow up, but it's not the same. I really have only good memories of Waterbury.
I lived on the north end all of my life. I left the state of CT over a decade ago The way my city looks is crazy! I hope there's a change sooner than later.
The city looked like it had a lot of potential but now it’s depressing. If our country kept factories opened and find a new solution for factories to remain open then poverty would be reduced along with the fact that our country would be modern just like Europe. We would be rich as Singapore, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, UAE, etc. If it’s not a wealthy suburb, town, or city then there is poor and old infrastructure in areas like Bridgeport,Waterbury,Detroit.
Along with most other older northern US cities. But Wall Street is too greedy and selfish to care about this country and it’s smaller to mid sized industrial cities.
My late uncle and auntie on my dad's side lived in Waterbury from 1972-80 before moving to Poughkeepsie New York i have great memories visiting them there

@Semaj Logan Listen after being down here for awhile it’s a complete culture shock and it took some time to get use to but I fuck with it. I just don’t like when people talk shit. The same way I shouldn’t talk shit about the south is the same way people shouldn’t talk shit about up north. I promise you if you ask anyone why’d they move down south I guarantee you 9/10 it’s going to be money related
It’s hilarious because I went to high school right up the road from the thumbnail. I drive by the thumbnail every day. That’s absolutely the most frustrating part of the city to try and navigate
Its so great to see them fix it up Willow , 😊❤ the improvements they made , back in the day it was Billy Joe , which is no longer around today , poor guy went to jail

crazy, I lived on 25 johnson street for about half my life and only moved out after the place had caught fire. I was living with my dad at the time after my parent's split up. I haven't been up there in years and never plan on going back, but thanks for letting me see my old neighborhood.

The best thing about Waterbury was Mary’s Diner. Great breakfast place!!!!!
That's sad.

You only feel that way because you’re not from there. People from up north move down south because we have to not because we want to

@Semaj Logan also I think there's some confusion. my response was to him not you
@Semaj Logan i think anyone's a fool to think that every state doesn't have its issues. I never been to South Dakota but I know they get it in too
My childhood home back in the 70s at 23 Adams street was set a fire , makes me cry to see such a great monument destroyed with fire 😢😢😢😢

What a great place, said no one ever.
Waterbury CT is a well kept urban utopia compared to places like Saginaw MI, Youngstown OH, and Niagara Falls NY.
