- I had noticed this video was no longer posted and couldnt tolerate for one second that this amazing rendition from la primma donna assoluta could not be enjoyed!
so..Enjoy! lol
**Also , being that I uploaded this video and no one else has yet to, Negative comments about Madame Price will not be tolerated!!
When she was interviewed after she turned 90, she was asked if she still sings and she said "oh yes...its the only part of me that still works!".
She held that high c for almost 15 secs! She is vocally unmatched!
That was a glorious high A,not a high C. However, unmatched most definitely. Her quality on the A is just out of this world, the attack just so meaningful, so much poise, structure, power and vocal generosity.
Ditto!
Negative comments on Leontyne Price? That does not, or should not, exist! The most luscious and glorious sound ever produced by any human voice. Period. And ... that long-sustained high-C at the end ..., mesmerizing!!! And bless Her.
Fantastic post,,I agree 100%
Thank you Dear for your reply! I didn't see it. Better late than never ...
Operabilia..so true but personally I don’t enjoy sopranos/tenors singing in English Weird I know..
operabilia EXACTLY!
You know, She sings it with HER VOICE in a gorgeous instrumental arrangement. And let's not forget that no one, and I mean NO ONE, comes even close to her flawless technique and her artistry. NO. ONE.
Absolutely true!
Leontyne is the best. Her technique and diction are flawless.
Others claim greatness, she is acclaimed.
I agree with you.
For those of you who criticize; Miss Price would say, it is just noise. In her eighties she still has this most beautiful sound in the world, and for those who are lucky enough to hear it, she is still singing while you are still judging. This voice, along with this thoughtful interpretation is the stuff heaven itself is made of. THIS is uniquely glorious.
This was indeed from the retirement Gala of Beverly Sills in the New York City Opera House back in October of 1980. I had the privilege of seeing this concert in person and was in musical heaven. Beverly was one of my favorite sopranos as well. I will treasure that experience forever. I also was thrilled by a standout performance from Placido Domingo singing "Granada". Beverly's farewell encore ( a lullaby she sang after all her concerts) was particularly poignant.
Jesus!!!..This almost put tears in my eyes...Her singing always changes my mood and puts me in an amazing moo but this time...I dont know it did something major... I feel like listening to this song just made me start my new year off perfect!!!!
She knocks me out emotionally with that voice of hers and her musicianship. She is, indeed, the gift that just keeps on giving!!!
I have loved this woman and her voice all my life, for its great flexibility and her intelligent and sensitive use of her gift. This rendition makes me feel better about myself and the world in general. She is sent from God. There is a voice lesson, an acting lesson, a life lesson. She is an angel. She is incomparable. She is Leontyne Price.
It's all perfect, but the moments that send chills up my spine are when she seamlessly switches into this chest/broadway/classical voice mix so she can clearly enunciate the words. Specifically :30-1:09 Her voice sounds so incredibly poignant and touching. Stunning.
She gets me everytime. I'm impressed with her nomatter what song she sings. She's the best soprano period!, in my opinion of course.
The singing of Leontyne Price has always ushered any true listener to the gates of heaven. That is why she herself described her voice as "uniquely glorious." She takes you right to God. God always bless her.
I attended a leider abend in Winnipeg during the 90s and my heart stood still for two hours.
Glorious voice.
Brava a thousand times.❤
How can anyone not adore her?!
This woman's voice moves me so deeply...I simply cannot put it into words...
There are few words to describe this amazing sound, and none around now to replace it. I am so fortunate to have seen Ms. Price in person several times. BRAVA DIVA! Few can do this "cross-over" with so much verve!
There has never been anyone like this great woman. She knows things about life and about her voice and where they intersect. She is a priestess to whom you must listen again and again to understand what that excellent singing is saying about the glory of God. She is the absolute apex of it all. She is a gateway. She is amazing.
It was Beverly Sill's favorite song!
They were very close and this was a tribute!
No negative comments of Madame Price!
I love that, thank you.
Hour Bubbles would referred to Madame Price as Lynn. 👑👑💙💚 Arnold bourbon Anaral
@@arnoldamaral3814 No, her familiar name to friends (like Sills) was “Lee.” (You can actually hear Sills using “Lee” when she introduces her at the Met gala where Price sings “My Man’s Gone Now.” It’s on UA-cam.
This is the best rendition of this song I have ever heard. BEAUTIFUL!
This is from the musical "A Chorus Line", about dancers on an audition to a show. It has nothing to do with the origianl, sung by an aspiring actor/dancer on a stair. BUT miss Price gives it another allure and raises the sung as if it was a great operatic aria. BRAVA!
As if it were the most serious of arias, Ms. Price's approach is stunning and breathtaking. The voice is so rich and resonant. She warms my heart every time I hear her. The great tragedy is that we do not live forever so that we may continually appreciate her gifts. No one today can do all that she did. We have great singers, however, the artistry and intensity are not nearly as strong as hers was. As the critic Paul Hume once said (I paraphrase), "Never equaled, few come close."
I believe that this performance was at the Beverly Sills farewell. What a tribute to Beverly. Leontyne sounds great! To think of an Aida, a Cio-Cio San, and the most famous Leonora of the 20th century singing this gorgeous arrangement in honor of Beverly Sills sends chills down my back. Leo, you are always the true America Diva with total class. Thanks for honoring Beverly, and to Bubbles...sing your highest notes in heaven!
There was nothing created better than that last note. Oh my goodness!
The last note alone excuses all the scooping Mamma Price likes to do! She can do what she wants as far as I'm concerned! Love her!
Simply mesmerizing! They come no greater! Happy Birthday, Diva!
This is so phenomenal!
WOW! I have never seen this until now. The usual flawless technique thar will never be equalled again by ANYONE!
Miss Price has always been for me the Stravarius of singers. Praise to Miss Price for allowing the world to hear her gorgeous sound forevermore.
The quote is: "They come none greater - few anywhere near so great."
Absolutely fabulous. Thanks for posting this up again.
that last note is magical.
Whenever I have a hard day, I play this beautiful clip. A great artist singing a great song HER way.
no singer comes greater than Miss Price
Just floods and floods of glorious sounds!
This masterpiece of a performance continues to grow in personal meaning to me as I continue to live. A gift of love from one supreme Diva to another, the love makes room for us all. Sail on Madame Price.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Love it, love it love it! Sometimes I forget how luck we are to have such an artist and videos and recordings to boot. The technique and artistry are combined to such an effect. I can only hope I reach such heights. Thanks for posting.
IIRC, she sang this Broadway showstopper in the tribute to Beverly Sills’s retirement. Sills was a great fan, and said the three greatest Italianate voices for her were Ponselle, Tebaldi, and Price. Price was a fan of hers too - on a gala show, after Price had sung, Sills said, “Wow, you’re some singer!” Price replied, “You’re not bad yourself!”
Wow! Simply Wow! Miss Price is the real deal. You can't deny that. Viva la Diva! Did she and Beverly ever perform together. Maybe and Ariadne auf Naxos?
Happy 90th birthday Ms Price!!
she's a national treasure!
Brava, Miss Price!! God bless you!!
I agree with all who l;ove the voice Ms Price has shown for so many years. We have to celebrate that we are living in a time where there are many ways one can hear voices as hers.
Thank you for this video clip! Simply Beautiful!!! Hail Ms. Leontyne Price Forever!!!
The great Leontyne Price just celebrated her eighty something birthday. She lives. Happy Valentines Day all!
Won't forget, can't regret how I feel about this performance: Beautiful.
I've never confused those two...very different voices, both divinely talented however. Love Ms. Norman for all of her offerings and adore Mme. Price for the same, and moreso for opening the gates.
This woman knows what love means!
Wonderful. Superb. Unmatched
I LOVE THIS WOMAN WITH ALL MY HEART!!!.Paul
she is a great singer...
Her voice is like a cup of coffee with the perfect amount of half and half, so delicious and creamy. Just satisfying beyond anything.
Thanks so much! I really missed it!!!!
my eyes are not dry thank you l p and happy holidays to all
SUBLIMATE, THANK YOU FOR SHARING BEAUTIFUL VIDEO THIS ONE, THIS INCREDIBLE VOICE, AGAIN THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO
It's not a soprano, it's a hunting weapon. Once he gets you, it's forever. She captivated me with her voice almost 40 years ago. She can do it again whenever she wants. And she does it regularly. Long live Leontyne Price, Aida, Princess of Ethiopia, and her immortal voice.
Isn't this at Ms. Sills final performance Gala? Price is beyond anything I can describe!
Isn't she everything? My goodness. The DICTION - I could understand what she was saying all the way on the side of New York. Her breath control is so unmatched. And she ALWAYS gives the audience a little extra. One of THE great Titans of Opera.
What a note!!!!! What a VOICE!
WOW! One of my favorite songs by my favorite opera singer....(ok, I loved Pavarotti too. But he's passed, rest well).
Had to watch that again......how WONDERFUL she was!
It’s so good to hear sing a pop song!
I Love her voice.
thanks for that amazing post!
You got that wrong...Leontyne predates Jessye by nearly twenty years. Both are great, yet, Leontyne, the undisputed prima donna assoluta of the late 60s and 70s, is in a class by herself.
Jessyee stands on Leontyne's shoulders, not the other way around.
Both do have awesome diction!
Larry is in love with her too, Paul!! She is queen and king all rolled into one!!!!
Thank you Miss Price. Thank God.
Glorious and beyond.
stunning
thank you very much! she is LOVE OF MUSIC!
\
Love to you for ever LEONTYNE PRICE😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Need an emotional lift? Listen to this glorious rendition of "What I Did for Love."
If this is sarcasm, then you, sir, made my day. If you were serious, well then, okay...
R.I.P. Marvin Hamlisch.. Thank you, Ms. Price.
Also -- and 'criminally' -- removed from YT is the audio+video version of 'Climb Every Mountain', w/Boston Pops, a stunning live performance. Can you recover that one, too?
it's on YT !!
You go, Girl!!!!
2:45 and onward is just awe inspiring..just wow
Damn... She still has it
I can't agree more!
That exquisite phrasing!! up to Jessye Norman and Maria Callas
No one can nail it like Price.
Sheila Ferguson!
@VoyArrasando Joan Sutherland died? I had no idea. Wow.
For people who are critical - if you had been in that theater listening to her voice pouring out - you wouldn't be criticising believe me.
Brava! brava!
Astounding!!!
Graceful lady wonderful singer ♥ ❤
Amazing!
Brava! Diva, Brava!!!
i recognized the set i just wasn't sure.
Amazing just beautiful full of passion 💕🥹
Bellissima!!!!
@jefflrfe, NONSENSE!!!! Leontyne sounds absolutely wonderful in this piece. If you can't stand a well-tuned singer, you've got hearing problems!
@Trinite33 beautifully said.
love her diction!
Splendida... Portentosa!... Musa!.. Diva!
By the way, I have been having my own love affair with leontyne Price since I was in high school in the '80's!
College in the early 60s..
I first heard her voice when I was in high school and thought, what beauty. I then and there vowed that I would like to sing like her too,one day.
My Voice Coach went to Julliard with her and I knew then and there that I had an excellent teacher.
Although I didn't go down the road to become an Opera Singer, I had my voice trained to sing very well.
My voice is a beautiful gift from God!
I agree with you - it's so stylistically outlandish, no matter how great her voice is. As for cross-over attempts, have you heard Sumi Jo's album of musical songs? It is surprisingly good.
Wow...insults!
God bless you!
sublime, as always! what year was this performance. and where did it take place? was it a performance of fledermaus?
It was Beverly Sills' farewell. I have the entirety on beta tape. It is delightful. Placido sings Granada, Renatta Scotto sings a crazy version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, etc Carol Burnett co-stars
1980
Yes Madame did start with "Catfish Row" but Porgy and Bess dear is not musical theatre. It is an OPERA... very difficult and demanding vocal music Gershwin wrote in it. Dont think a musical theatre approach would do this music justice....
i'll always remember l p this way
