Much too beautiful for the role, but he played it so well! Captured all of Rochester’s character flaws and strengths. I repeat his line “Have done and shall do” much more than I’d care to admit.

"...then I shall take to bleeding inwardly." Good God, Timothy Dalton is fantastic. Incredible actor. His broad variety of work become more and more well-known in years to come and people will wish they had known him for more than just the best Bond ever. At age 73 he's doing great as the Chief in Doom Patrol 2019. Framed, Hawks, the Informant, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Chuck, Penny Dreadful, the King's Mistress, Dr. Who, Beautician and the Beast, 2 Bond movies...a big variety and he never allowed himself to be put in a box.
Thank you, I really loved Timothy's portrayal of Rochester. I struggle when, in modern terms, some compare the character's behaviour to narcissism: in a way, I can understand why, but narcissistic people have no empathy and don't care about the wellbeing of their supposedly loved ones. Mr. Rochester is a wounded soul, he viewed himself as Jane's equal before the harshness of life hit him. He saw his redemption in Jane: I don't think he consciously realised he would hurt her when proposing marriage, I believe he felt a right to be happy knowing that her happiness laid with him, too. Dalton delivers a superb Rochester albeit I felt he had to overact at times to compensate for his partner's lack of responsiveness: during the 2-acts proposal for example or when she leaves him. Both scenes left me wanting. Jane was flat, in my opinion she just delivers the lines beautifully without acting them. I think she was directed to be demure abd submissive, but that wasn't the real character. I couldn't stop wishing for a different rendition with the character's passion and inner strenght because, I'm sorry to say, that always-present sad expression of hers ruined the entire series for me. Not to mention that it was hard to believe in the 20ys age-gap. Had an actress of the calibre of Samantha Morton acted with Dalton we would have had a masterpiece. However Dalton alone is worth watching. He really captures the inner torment of Rochester and he - not Zelah - manages to deliver subtle nuances with just a look. This is obviously my opinion, I hope one day I'll watch an adaptation where I love both lead actors because even 2006's was a bit of a disappointment with that modern approach: I didn't like Ruth's casting (albeit she was a better Jane) because she didn't deliver Jane's innocence, while I liked Toby. In 1996, 1997 and 2011 I liked mostly the Janes. This is a marvelous story which makes us dream, I wonder if in real life men who are as manly as Dalton and whom can love as Rochester do exist...?!
Tim has said he thought that was one of his best roles and loved playing it; However I was disappointed to learn that Zelah has regretted doing it (though she won a BAFTA for it) mainly because she feels it typed cast herself and limited role offers and believes it ruined her career. : ( Yet she was so GOOD in the role !
@@megahappy2bemeIntheStarz I saw her in a role before this. She was great, sassy! What karma to play opposite the sexiest man alive... in his prime! All eyes were on him.
@@missyadams I wish I could find a copy of that, maybe on UA-cam ? It is too bad that she didn't continue in acting but I believe after Jane Eyre it was difficult for her to get work due to typecasting, since she was so identified with Jane. I read that she afterwards regretted playing Jane which made me a little sad, and she was so excellent playing the part too. She & Tim had great chemistry together !

The 1997 movie adaptation had been my favorite adaptation until I saw this one. I can watch it from beginning to end and back again (Though I often watch the episodes of their first meeting through their engagement.) Dalton so artistically captures all of Rochester’s roughness, cynicism, desperation, and redemption despite being much too attractive for the role. But of course he can’t help that. Truly remarkable. And Clarke did the character justice. It takes a skilled actor to depict Jane as aware of her plainness without suggesting she feels inferior or less deserving. This is certainly the best pair of Jane and Rochester I’ve seen. I can’t get through many of the other adaptations truthfully. Luckily this one exists 🤣
You don't need the overpowering music to capture the perfection of those actors in their roles. Please eliminate it so that we can enjoy their performance. Thank you.
Mon Mothma I tried to give emphasis to the music because i think it conveys all the emotion of the spoken words but all pov's are respected. Thanx for watching !!!!!
You got most of Tim's great scenes (I also like the one in the library the morning after the Mason/Bertha incident) and the one at the very end when they are talking in the garden and he's a little jealous of St. John too. I like it, but can you turn the music down at some points so their dialogue can be heard better ? I know you worry about copyright issues, but I think it will be OK, since I have the music lower in my one video and you can hear her & Tim better and it's been fine.
Yes,i also like the scenes you mentioned but couldn't include them because the video would be more than 15 minutes and i'm not allowed to make longer videos than this for you tube.At first the music sounded lower but i decided to turn up the volume so that it's better heard. At some parts, you are right, some of the dialogue is not heard but still it took me a lot of time to upload this, so i'll make do with this one. However,i hope that the viewers won't be annoyed by the background music!Thank you,Mare!!!!
I agree....I love this version of Jane Eyre (trying to decide whether 1973 or 1983 is my favorite version). These are many of my favorite scenes but the music is just ANNOYING.

Unpopular opinion: I don't think this adaptation is so great. First of all, no chemistry between leading actors and the difference of height is hilarious. Then Mr. Rochester isn't supposed to be so tall and "Byronic", he isn't Byronic in the book (Byronic has a different meaning altogether). No humour at all (Mr. Rochester has a weird, funny side too). Jane is too sad and submissive, he is too sure of himself, în the proposal scene for ex., and has an unnatural way of delivering the lines, în a few scenes. It must have been the director's vision, but the overall result is rather lifeless.
