(Drone software engineer here) In the house there is no GPS signal for the drone to locate itself, so it defaults to using optical flow (camera). That’s why covering it caused the crash. It could also break the gimbal if you try to move it with the cover on. Flying with broken props may be ok for a bit, but the continued vibration generated will eventually mess up the IMU signal and can also cause a crash.
Also, if he was trying to fly in Cine mode with sensors on. It would go haywire when inside. I learnt it the hard way when I smashed my mini 3 pro on the ceiling
Yikes! I accidentally took off outside with the gimbal cover on with Mini 3 Pro; hopefully got it back down quick -- thanks for the share hood you're still in the air!

Well to be fair you should never fly inside, aswell as never fly with the gimbal protector on
Camera has nothing to do, most probable cause could be a shiny or reflective surface like your floor.
