Picture Mr Bean as the pianist, trying to keep up with a couple of violinists completely ignoring him, as in this case, making faces all along. Hilarious
Or much better, imagine Mr Bean is a mean violinist, starting and stopping randomly just to troll a very serious professional pianist trying to accompany him. There's a lot of potential there

My violin teacher is always positive and polite. He is never condescending, the way I feel that Heifetz was here. That student looked absolutely terrified. A teacher must instill confidence. This wasn’t it.
What he should have done was slow the technique way down, and show the young man one note at a time, then get him to do it that way.
I had a very rude trombone instructor when I was very young. I quit.

Helping a student does not need to include redicule, sarcasm & other aggressive gestures. They really just re-enforce the Teacher’s own opinion of his stature. After 63 years of music making, I look back at my interactions with three dozen teachers, 5 on a long term basis, the others as a student player at masterclasses. I will say that the very best teachers are not always the best players. They are exceptionally good at reading a student & delivering what they need in a manner that gets immediate results while making the student eager for more challenges. Sometimes great players are just lousy teachers. Not to say you don’t learn from them but it’s best to sit in the back and hope you pick up something by osmosis. Occasionally you hit the jackpot & you get to work with one that is a fabulous player & a great teacher. We have it well documented here. Mr. Heifetz was not in that group.

@@JNaomic970 All teachers are human so not every interaction comes from their best intentions. They all occasionally push a bit too hard or at the wrong time. But to go to these lengths with a student in a public session being filmed is just unconscionable IMHO. There’s a natural power imbalance in a Teacher/Student relationship and it’s sad to see it abused like this.

Heifetz tells the student more bow and then to slow down, but then Heifetz can't help but speed up again in his demonstration. I'm not sure why he was so concerned with pace (haste?) in violin playing, his own playing was richer prior to the end of WWII, with more rubato and a bel canto quality (likely influenced by Kreisler).

😀 yah but nobody sounded like he did nobody. The student was very good though. I had an opportunity to study with him in 1981 and was accepted initially on recommendation by a teacher and asked to make a tape and also accepted due to photos that I sent however he required an audio tape of several things also. it would’ve been a great experience for me however may have been too sensitive. Unlike the student in this video who stoically took his criticism I probably would have been unable to take it. I didn’t end up being able to make that tape because it was a rough summer for me and on the list of things that he required was Paganini Caprice # 17 and I felt this particular requirement was too daunting, I wish I had dug my heels and just done the tape though because it could’ve been a great experience for me. I love Heifetz. I was in tears when he died.

I've rewatched this several times and I just don't see where everyone is seeing that he's being mean-spirited or ridiculing the student. This actually seems like a very normal violin lesson to me, at least having studied with a eastern European teacher. Maybe it's cultural difference? We're very soft with our students in America. I doubt I could ever be so stern, but I teach kids and teens who are playing for fun, so stem is not what I need to be. But at a higher level, lessons can be very workman-like. He's being very neutral and matter of fact. Blunt, uncharming, but not mean. Nothing he said would have embarrassed me or made me feel shame. I've been in lessons like that though, and this just doesn't seem to be one of those.
