- In the United States, the best-known version was recorded by country musician Roy Clark. His version, under the English title "Yesterday When I Was Young," became his biggest hit up to that time on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, peaking at No. 9 in August 1969, and indeed, it became his only top 40 pop hit, peaking at No. 19. Glen Campbell released it on the album Houston (I'm Comin' to See You) in 1974. It was also covered by Danny Doyle, Tony Sandler and Ralph Young, Walter Brennan, Chyi Yu and other artists.
When I was in my early twenties, my mother would sing this song or listen to it and cry. I didn’t really understand her tears at the time. Now I am my mother. I’m writing this through my tears.

I have Glen Campbell’s autobiography. This has also been sung by Roy Clark but the words could be Glen’s life-the women, the drugs and drinking, multiple marriages and children, on and on. His parents and family were praying for him and in the end he came back to the Lord Jesus Christ. He was good friends with Alice Cooper, who also is a strong Christian. Though Alzheimer’s took its toll, he is in Heaven now with Jesus Christ and enjoys an existence that is by far greater than anything on this earth. For all time! Love this song, remember it well.
