  • Get to know your Dayton Art Institute with our Object of the Month videos! The DAI's volunteer Museum Guides prepare and present these online talks, highlighting different works from the museum's collection.
This month, we're going to explore an object that doesn’t appear particularly remarkable compared to the many others around it. It's not taller; most of these are pocket-sized-only 2 to 3 inches tall. It has no outstanding shape or color. Yet, in the Dayton’s collection, this is the only snuff bottle that is made with a technique known as cloisonné. Watch the video to learn more about it!
Featured Artwork: Artist unidentified (China, Qing Dynasty, 1644-1912), Snuff Bottle, 18th century, enamels on copper. Gift of Mrs. Virginia W. Kettering, 1976.215

Very nice video and what a beautiful collection of little snuff bottles. Were they acquired piecemeal or did a collector provide many or all of the the little treasures?
Very nice explanation of the cloisonné process too, thank you.

Glad you enjoyed the video and an excellent question! A majority of them were gifted to the museum by Virginia Kettering, who was a noted collector of Asian art. Many were also gifted by Jefferson Patterson, who was the son of museum founder Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell.
