The anime was based on the light novel series of the same name. I believe Baka tsuki has all 25 volumes translated online there. It's not mind blowing literature or anything but I found it a fun read. As for the death of the author, I have no info on that but there are series released under the same pen name after the anime ended. So if they did pass away it would have been after/during 2016 since the last published book by them was 2017. People keep saying they died but I still can't find any articles on it just random forum posts with no sources
